Xbox One Scaling Chip Improvements in February Update (No more sharpening filter!)

Those titanfall pics looks exactly the same to me. What is everyone seeing?

This post from a page back shows the effect in an isolated (out-of-game) example. The effect is most obvious on high-contrast edges and some interior details. It's a little subtle until you realize what you're looking for. If it's a choice between no sharpening and too much sharpening, getting rid of the effect is the much better choice.

Glasses? I mean its not 'huge" but its still noticeable. ;)

What is noticeable? Tell me exactly what you're seeing. I have 20/20 vision btw.

That's very minor. And I can't see any change at all in titanfall pics. As much of an uproar as I was hearing about this thing I'm not seeing a change when it's "fixed."

Listen friend, you asked a question, and I did my best to accommodate that question. If you honestly can't see the difference, that's neat and all, but it does mean you're incapable of seeing something that a normal person should be able to.

This is going on for basically every high-contrast edge in the image, and there are interior detail differences. It's an improvement, though you may have been expecting more. That was why I linked you to the apple comparison so you could better understand.

I found it most noticeable in CoD where the sharpen filter affected text. There is also quite a bit of foliage in CoD that sharpening is very noticeable on.

Comparison images are hard to do because once you have the update there is no going back (thank god). The Titanfall images specifically don't show a big difference and thus do not accurately represent how big of a difference the change is overall. EDIT: As Gestault said high-contrast edges show the biggest difference,

This is much more clear. Thank you.

The whole image looks 'softer' or 'blurry' if you want to call it now. Also the jaggies are less noticeable. No offence, I was just kidding with the glasses comment. :)

so my question (i have instant on and received the update no problem) what if you're someone who doesn't use instant on, don't want to use instant on and always have your system turn completely off...how do you get the update? is manual your only option?

Thanks, I got it.

Seriously why cant I get it? I had my xbox in instant on enabled, and the auto update thing on, and my xbox one was off all night. its still not happening. i just disabled all the auto on , auto update stuff, completely powered off my xbox one, turned it back on, re enabled all of the auto on, check update stuff, and did a full network test.. now its in sleep mode again waiting. why cant I get it v.v

Anyone else still without the update?

*raises hand* =(

Dat fucked up gamma :(
They've never fixed it on 360 in 8 years of complaining and still managed to fuck up again on One, so hopefully
they'll understand and fix the problem soon. Did they ever aknowledge the existence of an actual problem in need of a fix?

Started playing Dead Rising 3 and its so much better now. Why on earth it was allowed in the first place is a joke. Assassins Creed 4 looked good as well.

CoD: Ghosts still looks shit but that's down to the game regardless of the scaler or not.

I hope MS will include, in a future update, the option for 1080i. I am forced to play@720p because my capture card only supports 1080i max. (I make video guides...long story).

And I'm not the only one who wants this! A simple google search will show that lots of people are waiting for it...

Although this technique looks great with most media, fast-moving video, such as sports footage, suffers a slight blur at 1080i. For this reason, Xbox One does not support interlaced resolutions.

That's dumb.

You really have to wonder who's green lighting these image manipulation decisions at MS and what their rationale is for darkening everything. They must has conducted studies that have shown that customers prefer the out of whack gamma. It explains how Windows 8 got through.

same reason TV's are set to "torch mode" in showrooms and out of the box...

Killer Instinct and Dead Rising both look softer and cleaner to me.

Really nice. Glad they fixed it despite me not really noticing a problem. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

DR3 has improved a lot, at launch RGB Full was unusable for the game even on highest gamma. Now RGB Full is much better.

KI seems to have been designed more for RGB Limited, I should do Sadira's stage next, lol.

full crushes blacks on both my xbone and ps4.

crushed blacks doesn't mean darker .. though thats usually a bi product. It means you are actually seeing different shades as one color. you are losing detail if you have it on full seeing as full does not seem to work with any tvs at the moment.

It's probably one of those things that look like a huge difference in-person than screenshots. There are plenty of examples of this where someone thinks something looks good graphically but doesn't in pictures but does in-person.

Regarding 360, I believe there exists an interview or offhand comment in which someone connected to MS confirms it was designed to combat the poor gamma performance (usually erring low and "washed out") of the average HDTV of the time. The idea was of course conceived in the year 2004, when HDTV's were shit and people were incredibly uneducated on basic calibration.

KI so far shows the biggest improvement for me. I have a Sony 4k TV set that has been calibrated and it takes any feed and does it's own scaling to display using all the pixels. While not true 4k by any means, it still looks really good. But ever since this update, the game just looks damn right cleaner than it did before with the sharpening.

Ryse to me looks different in a good way as well. I thought it looked great before and I know it uses it's own scaling method, but to me and my wife, we both think it looks a lot cleaner.

Going to try Dead Rising 3 later tonight if I can pull myself away from Titanfall! :)

Natural how? Details are the same, except limited has gray blacks. Playing on a monitor highlights it.

With Killer Instinct, I would agree, but not with DR3.

Because colors are over saturated on the full image...its a significantly more natural looking image...

You could argue subjectively that it looks "better" to you over saturated...but objectively its a more natural image...

The problem here is that IF your TV supports Full RGB..then it should be properly calibrated to whichever setting you choose..

MS just uses a bananas gamma setting on their console...even back to the 360 and PS3...the 360 needed COMPLETELY different calibration settings than the PS3...and I never liked the way the 360 looked when set to Full on my TV...

And this is coming from someone that prefers an image with the contrast a little over done...
