Killzone: Shadow Fall Multiplayer Runs at 960x1080 vertically interlaced

But I thought I was blind if I couldn't tell something was 1080P. I thought anything below 1080P was shit and a sign of weakness.

There were game reviews that noted specifically how blurry the MP was. People acting like "no one could tell the difference until we were told what the resolution was!" are trying too hard.

A smaller but less fixable problem is the multiplayer’s heavy use of anti-aliasing that can make things blurry, but in general it looks great, even if it doesn't run at the advertised 60 frames a second whenever a server is more than two-thirds full.

This tweet is really fitting

Console / tv upscale by doubling the pixels wide

No. In this case the composite image is 1920X1080 from what I understand. But it is compositing by interlacing. The game should have a higher framerate and response feeling... but looks kinda like... well blurry... even from a temporal perspective. Like strange frame blending.

at the end, the most surprising part is how inconsistent the framerate is at this resolution. I mean.. seriously.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I could have sworn that before launch Guerrilla said that Shadow Fall's multiplayer ran at a variable resolution to keep the framerate high. Must have dreamed it.

Proves how meaningless resolution is until someone tells people what it is

Except people did recognise the multiplayer image quality was off and couldn't put their finger on why. Now they know.

Holy poop, constant "But I thought we could all tell a difference!!!1" posts. Stop talking about a situation that you know NOTHING about. We all thought it was blurry. We were led to believe that the game was native 1080p, so we blamed that NOTICABLE blurriness on the AA solution.

My goodness.

Then why haven't we heard about this until months after launch when all the other next gen games have been discussed in great detail?

Because we just heard that it was a lower resolution five seconds ago.

How is something like this just now coming to light with so much attention being given to resolution this generation?

It's a resolution that can be pixel mapped perfectly on 1080p screens. 1:1 vertical, 2:1 horizontal.

The argument for 1080p is really the argument for per pixel mapping. 1080p looks bad on 1440p monitors for example.

Actually, it'd be nice if Xbone games starts to use this resolution. Since the machine knows what resolution it's outputting at, if it's outputting at 1080p, use 960x1080. If it's connected to a 720p or 768p displays, use 720p.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
That is very underwhelming given that the MP's framerate isn't brilliant either.

what? but everyone told me 1080p makes such a difference and you can spot lower res from a mile away!
If you played the game, you'd spot that something was off in MP from a mile away. But it looked like a poor FXAA implementation rather than halved resolution.

I guess it went unnoticed because no one really expects crazy visuals out of MP portions of games anyway.

We definitely noticed but since they said they used a different AA method in SP from MP we attributed it to that. I was always confused as to how BF4 MP at 900p with FXAA looked sharper than this when it was supposed to be 1080p but turns out it wasn't.

Well they claimed 1080p for wipeout HD, didn't they? I guess the second number is all that matters to them.
They can get away with saying it is native 1080p here. Technically, 960x1080 is 1080p. Just not 'full HD'. Now if they said full HD, that would be a flat out lie.

The thing is that 1080p = 1920*1080.

And lol at people saying this proves that resolution doesn't matter.

Come on, that's crap.

What's crap about it? People thought it was a poor implementation of FXAA, turns out it was really just a significant resolution drop.

Either way, they noticed the blur, that's what matters. Now we just have an explanation for it.

Yup. Something always looked off with multiplayer.

That's right, people actually noticed the increased blurriness, but didn't notice the resolution drop. All in all an impressive technical trick from GG, although disappointing that even with such a resolution drop they couldn't achieve a steady 60fps.

I noticed resolution drop immediately upon playing mp, was obvious to me. Still love the game though.

"resolutiongate" when it comes to the xb1, why not the ps4 also?

Should hold both consoles to the same standards.

But but I never slated the Xbox One either? :( Would love you to show me where I did?
Crap like the resolution makes no odds to me no matter which system it's on, as long as the game itself is playable and fun?

the multiplayer engine is a complete mess

*not 1080p
*frame rate all over the place
*needless reflections that probably hurt the frame rate
*low res effects
*huge amount of lod pop ins
*annoying shadow pop ins

Dice beat GG this time around, they ported a PC engine to PS4 so quickly and it looks and performs way better.

My b, meant to quote Havels post above yours. I agree with you.

Those terms usually imply an aspect ration of 16:9. I am not sure if that is part of a technical specification, but otherwise they wouldn't make any sense.

On the plus side, this means that GG didn't somehow devise the worst implementation of FXAA the world has ever seen.

Honestly, though, I'm curious to learn more about the technique they're using here -- it certainly seems to offer markedly improved IQ when compared to conventional upscaling.

Yep i have seen many people saying it look blurry but most people thought it was the AA solution they used .
Now we know it was a problem with the res and not a AA one .

EDIT this also make the MP portion of the game even worst since it has so many tech problems .

at least this information came to light. i just wish all this talk of resolution would go away. or at least the more inane parts of the conversation that always devolve into console war fanboyism.

It's actually a lower res than the Titanfall XB1 beta.

I certainly noticed MP doesn't look as good as the SP, just didn't know why, I thought they just use lower detailed textures in mp or something
