Yoshi's New Island | OT | Is you is or is you ain't my Baby (Mario)

Why does Nintendo continue to refuse to give this series the treatment it deserves?

Out of the 2 sequels Yoshi's Island got, the only one I really thought was a bad game was Yoshi's Story.

I am one that actually thought Yoshi's Island DS was pretty fun, even though it had plenty of cheap hits because of the 'dead space' in the hinge.

I expect a lot more than "not a bad game" from a Yoshi's Island sequel though, you know? That game deserves more.

To sum up...

  • Unresponsive controls
  • Poor level design
  • Anachronistic checkpointing
  • Lack of anything 'new'
  • Very poor use of 3D
  • 'Horrid' music
Mine is already on its way though, so I'll see what it's like myself soon...

So, exactly what it looked like being from the video. Makes sense.

I personally trust Edge's reviews a lot, even if they're typically about 1 point harsher than I would be. I suppose in this case a review doesn't matter as my mind was made up, but it's good to see confirmation of my decision to dodge this one.

The worst part for me about YI:DS was the huge fucking blind spot in the middle of both screens. For a series that prided itself on exploration to find stuff for 100%, that was pretty inexcusable for me. I hated it and never finished the game :(

Same... I wanted to overlook it but I agree it turned out to be pretty obnoxious.

Still, a 5/10 would mark a considerable improvement over a 2/10, right?

If that's the case, then you can at least be happy, that this cannot happen in YI3, considering that has only one screen where the gameplay is displayed :).

BTW, if anyone would be willing to deck out Nabbit in a Yoshi theme I'd be greatly appreciative. Here's the basic Nabbit I use:

Less than 2 days to launch and still no reviews?

Nintendo wisely embargoed the title so people wouldn't cancel their preorders. Though I'm not sure what gain there is to be had in the long run by further eroding people's trust in the company.

It's really a shame that Nintendo (Artoon/Arzest) has continued to make essentially expansion packs to Yoshi's Island over the years, rather than at least iterating on the gameplay and moving it forward like they had with their other franchises.

I'm still tempted to get this, but the reviews are persuading me not to make it a day one for $35-$40.

Haha, I suppose it would. And to be fair, I do think that this game looks better than YIDS. Considering I had pretty much an allergic reaction to playing that game, that's not saying much.

Yes, it's exactly the same.

I wonder, what kind of checkpoint system Edge envisions, I consider 1-2 checkpoints per level appropiate for levels of a size comparable to the first Yoshi's Island.
Edge didn't have this complaint for DKTF (where many other reviewers did), so it wouldn't surprise me if things are particularly bad in this Yoshi game.

To be fair, whenever they tried doing something different (Yoshi's Story, that tilt controlled one nobody played) everybody hated it.

Probably because they got the first game right that it doesn't really leave room for a sequel or require it.

Having said that I still enjoyed Yoshi Island DS and I look forward to playing Yoshi New Island regardless what the reviewers say as I don't trust any of them.

But I think Nintendo biggest problem with Yoshi is that they don't know what to with him since he's both a character and an Item in the Mario universe.

Yarn Yoshi might change that however, if it get released this year.

Considering Yoshi's Island is my second favorite game of all time (after Mario 3), it's really sad to see Nintendo treating this franchise with such little respect. After the middling Yoshi's Island DS from Artoon, why would they hire a team made up of ex-Artoon devs to make the sequel? Why can't they make one of these games in-house and do the series justice?

I can understand this position. I agree that the first game was phenomenal and probably one of the best platformers ever.

In my opinion, ignoring all the hyperbolic hate aimed at this one, I think it looks like it'll be great. We'll see though, I'm hoping to grab this and Layton 6 this weekend.

Sometimes games just rub anonymous, constantly changing* EDGE reviewer the wrong way. Excitebots also got a 4/10 to name one example. Its just one more day until other reviews come along.

*-This could explain the checkpoints issue.

The EDGE score is ridiculous.

You could characterize the game as "unexciting" but it's not really a bad game.

Controls are fine. Graphics are pretty. Music is ok. Average length is OK for this short of platformer (if you set your goal as clearing the levels out it will take a lot of time).

It's just that it doesn't do anything new and compared to Yoshi's Island it is uninspiring. But it's much better than the YIDS abomination.

They thought the controls were sloppy and the music was horrid in addition to the lack of anything new, so they gave it a low score. Not exactly ridiculous.

I am theoretically interested in this but I am currently very content in chipping away at a large backlog. I will worry about this in a few months if the word of mouth ends up being good.

YIDS an abomination??

Right after the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the couple to whom the Stork gave Baby Mario and Baby Luigi allege that the brothers are not their babies. It goes on searching for the real parents, when it finds Kamek wanting to steal the babies once more. Again, he proceeds to take only Baby Luigi away, and Baby Mario falls on the nearby Egg Island. He is found by a group of Yoshis who decide to take him to his brother and defeat Baby Bowser, since he is planning to turn Egg Island into his vacation home.

I bet the twist at the end is that they're orphans, and they grew up on the streets of Brooklyn, becoming the people they are today.

Hah, you got me there. YIDS is not an abomination - but hey I'm posting on a forum, I have the right to exaggerate :p

I was hoping for something along the lines of |OT| Eggs-cuuuse me, GAF, but the title chosen works out fine. :p

Gonna wait for some more impressions, I'm still leaning towards a purchase at the moment.

So disheartening. I'll try it for myself but Nintendo is skating on thin ice lately.

What? Nintendo's been on a roll lately with platformers (3D World, Tropical Freeze). This game seems to be the only one that's been phoned in really. Of course I expected nothing more from Artoon/Arzest. That alone assured this game was never on my radar.

I wonder how this game's going to end. If they're retconning the original ending, does that mean they have a bigger plan for the role of Mario and Luigi's parents?

probably not

It didn't, but the gyro controls only play a marginal role and work well anyway.
I guess they thought that they didn't? I mean I haven't played the game or read the review, but I've seen some complaints about gyro controls in other places as well.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I still find complaints about checkpoint systems in platformers amusing. It's like they really want to write "why is there challenge?"

I will get my copy tomorrow.

As a huge fan of Yoshi's Island and knowing that Tezuka worked on this i just had to pre-order this. I have reasonable expectations and i hope this game turns out good but there will be no sugar-coating from me if it really flat out sucks just like Edge is saying.

since they're gyro controls, they're annoying and intrusive by default though.

Well, I liked them in Dream Team and they didn't have much presence in Dark Moon, but any other 3DS game that had them annoyed me. What's the point if a button press can do the same thing?

For all of those bemoaning the EDGE score, I find that they're usually right more often than they're wrong for my tastes. Having said that, they do tend to mark down games that might be considered more 'kids' games, a prime example being the LEGO series. Their score for LCU was incomprehensible to me. In the main though, I tend to trust their reviews more than other outlets. The key for me is to read the review text and if it jives with me, I'll go with their score for lack of actually getting my hands on the game. If I feel that they've not really dug into the perceived issues, I'll trust my own judgement. In short, a review is an opinion, it points you in a certain direction but you don't have to follow it if it doesn't sit right with you.

So, another Artoon Yoshi game. Got it.

at last, for christ's sake
*still keeping faith*

I don't dislike what I'm seeing, seems like a proper Yoshi platformer. It fails to convey some excitement, sure, but I'm all about it if its a solid game, which I believe will be

Embargo is up Thursday at 8am PST.

Are you writing the Gamespot review?

By the way, isn't this embargo the usual one? A day before the first release date throughout the world? It at least doesn't seem too different compared to the other Nintendo games I've reviewed in the past.
