Ys Community Thread | "Do you know the name Adol Christin?"

The power of Falcom OSTs, I usually play Ys at night for a couple of minutes before falling asleep and in any other time where I can play with a handheld (laundry, cooking, commuting, etc). I ended up playing for one hour yesterday night because of this: http://youtu.be/iTabxBIMPaA

And if what people here are saying that the other versions of the game had an even better OST is true, I'll enjoy my time playing them!
After playing Chronicles I immediately bought Ys I&II and III for PC Engine. I think that I'll be getting IV in both SNES and PCE versions, just because...

As I've stated a few times on other threads, I have played through ALL Ys games chronologically.

Too bad these games will never reach the popularity their deserve. Ys games are some fine, fine games.

OK so what's the deal with the PSP version of VI? It's on the JP PSN store, but not NA? Is there an English text option? Odd that it wouldn't be on the NA store when all the others are - seems like this is a niche series that benefits from accessibility.

But I see it's published by Konami - probably the worst Japanese publisher still in business.

Konami is doing you a favor and not letting you waste your money on a godawful product. You should thank them for it and pick up the PS2 or PC version instead so you have a competent version to play.

I guess to be fair it would work better off PSN since running it from the memory stick helps with the loading times, but it would still suffer from framerate issues and be really ugly. Falcom's own PSP ports look and run vastly better than Konami's effort.

With that version, as chaosblade said, you're really not missing much.

Truth be told, releasing it on PSN would probably do more to hurt the series then help.

Running the game off of a memory card does help (I play it on my Vita and it's a lot better than the original UMD release), but it's still not overly great.

If you can get it, the PC version is the best, but the PS2 version is perfectly playable.

I have a UMD of it. It has the superior OP, at least.

PC version is amazing. That's the one I played. Not sure how you could get it without torrenting, though.

You can order it directly from Falcom, it's not cheap though. XSEED will probably also release it eventually, I'd guess Sara will work on it after Trails SC.

Right, thats what I mean.

Here in Japan buying it from Falcom directly, or Amazon or wherever, is easy. I don't know if they ship internationally, though.

Falcom ships internationally, international orders are done via email and not their website though.

omgfloofy has a sample international order on her site, for those interested in more detail on how international orders work.

Ahh, I see.

At any rate, if one is going to play 6, the only acceptable one is the PC version. Put all settings up as high as possible, and play that glorious 60fps Ys goodness.

That OiF engine is pure magic.

Technically it's Napishtim's engine - Ys VI came first by 2 years. :)

So uh, hey... is the Premium Box 8 CD soundtrack set from the Limited Edition Oath in Felghana something of a rare item? I was perusing "music boxes" on eBay and this jumped out. Just getting the word out here in case someone is interested in adding to their collection of Ys memorabilia. Less than a day left and it's got zero bids. Hm, probably asked too high a price.

Not really. It's rare to come across since it doesn't pop up often on auction sites, but if you know where to look you could probably get the actual first release, complete with the game and the CD set, for significantly less.

I'm waiting for the Steam version of Ys 6, seems pretty inevitable at this point.

I play Ys VI on PS2.

And I keep the voices in English.

Blah. I have high tolerance for dubs but I turned that VA off. Blaaah.

Tolerance isn't even the right word. I pretty much only play/watch localized games/shows and still found Ys VI especially bad, haha.

Heh. I'm going to have to try this once.

Gotta experience the lows to appreciate the highs.

EDIT:
CYBDWmy.jpg

Felghana was always a difficult one to place. When viewed like this, Adol's trek through fantasy Europe is a little off-balance. I through IV take place reasonably near each other, and then only a year after Felghana, he's all the way the hell over the other side of the Medo Sea. He was riding a ship when he arrived, so that's not too surprising. But a relatively quiet voyage all the way around? Doesn't sound too likely.

What's important to consider is what happened after. There's a span of 3 years unaccounted for between V and VI. What happened during those 3 years? We'll probably get a game that addresses that at some point... we know that he'll eventually travel to the Orietta Region at some point. Xandria is right next door, seems the most likely time to visit would be right after Ys V.

Falcom puts up the Oath LE with the music box on occasion as a deal on their mail order site. Although I guess it's been a while now.

1) You list a bunch of Ys IV music and don't have Sanctuary of the Sun, clearly you are just posing as a fan.

You post Shrine of the Sun but not the superior version of it? Clearly you are just posing as a fan ;p

2) Ys III/OiF just can't be beat. Bad boss music?

Beasts Black as Night (OiF) I mean, come ON!

It is weak by Ys standards, although not as weak as Ys V (Turning Death Spiral is pretty epic though). It's not bad per se, but any other Ys game has stronger boss music than Ys III/OiF. Plus, I've heard better boss music from Mieko Ishikawa (for reference, she's the true essence of old school Falcom music for me).

Other selections from the greatest Ys soundtrack of all time:

A Premonition: Styx (PCE)
Shock of the Death God (PCE)
Be Careful (PCE)
Illburns Ruins (OiF)
Chester's Theme (OiF)
Darling Elena (OiF)
Steeling the Will to Fight(OiF)
Tearful Twilight (OiF)
Valestine Castle (PCE)
Sealed Time (OiF)
Tower of Fate (PCE)

and from the Ys III Super Arrange Version just because:

Wanderers from Ys (Seriously, this version is AMAZING, the Spanish trumpets alone are epic.)

Ys IV, as with pretty much every Ys game has some amazing tunes, and I loved them, hell I bought the Perfect Collections back in the 1990s, (Still sore they were stolen, years later). But Ys III is perfect. The action tunes are at their most epic, and the slower, more emotional stuff is all pitch perfect. The core compositions are all so well put together that you can listen to the PC-88 versions and they are still just as good. Seriously, the FM versions of these tunes are god-tier. It's a high mountain that Ys III sits upon, but sit upon it it does.

Looks like we won't agree on this, so let me put it in this way: As a whole package, Ys IV is my favorite Ys soundtrack; Ys III/OiF has songs I like more, but less songs I like overall (of course, it has less songs in total).

And just for the sake of it: Wanderers From Ys performed by the performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. As beautiful as amazing the SAV is.

Too bad you haven't posted any of these "god-tier" PC-88 tracks :( *goes to hear the soundtrack with Hoot*

I'll end this with something I think that we can all agree on:

Memories of Celceta butchered Ys IV's soundtrack.

IMO Celceta's soundtrack is good, with some awesome new tracks (Underground Ruins is my jam), but there's also a lot of hit and miss songs and most of the arranged Ys IV's songs are disappointing, although some arrangements are actually quite good. Burning Sword is a great overworld arrange and so far it's almost up there with the Perfect Collection version, Harlequin's Temptation is another one of my favorites (it may be missing the choirs, but dat slap bass and glorious melody still hit it) and In the Fires of Ignition is freaking metal (i.e. awesome) in Celceta. Ancient Legend, Lefance and Tower are just glorious in Celceta.

But my biggest issue with it is that the quality of arranges is pretty varying. We have cheap synths, other songs have acoustic instruments and it's all an inconsistent mess. Ys Seven may not come close to Felghana thanks to the cheap synths, but at least all of the soundtrack sounded similar in style.

TL;DR: Celceta's soundtrack is overall good, but there are a lot of hit and miss songs. It's very disappointing if you were expecting anything in the quality of The Dawn of Ys, though.

P.S. Controversial opinion of the day: Ys IV J.D.K. Special(s) ≥ The Dawn of Ys >> Mask of the Sun >>> That crappy PS2 "remake".

Not really. It's rare to come across since it doesn't pop up often on auction sites, but if you know where to look you could probably get the actual first release, complete with the game and the CD set, for significantly less.

Totally agreed. I got mine in near mint condition for 50€.

I assume we are in agreement that TG16 Ys soundtracks are the best arrangements of their respective entries?

For Ys I & II, not at all. For Ys III and IV... hmm, mmmaybee.

Bah! No guitar in the background and no Yonemitsu synths means it crap sir! CRAP!

Though honestly not a big fan of Ys IV JDK Special. I quite like a lot of the other synth albums, but when it comes to Ys IV, the Perfect Collections cannot be beat.

Agreed that Mieko Ishikawa is amazing. Disagree on the boss music, and do so heartily. Ys IVs boss music is probably my least favorite in the series V excepted. Strongest Foe sits up there with Darm as my favorite in the series.

Looks like we won't agree on this, so let me put it in this way: As a whole package, Ys IV is my favorite Ys soundtrack; Ys III/OiF has songs I like more, but less songs I like overall (of course, it has less songs in total).

Thing is, for me Ys III has songs I like better, AND more songs that I like total. Ys IV is no slouch, as I said. But outside of Dancing in the Road, I can't think of a song from Ys III that I dislike. The soundtrack is perfection. Morning Departure still gives me all the feels whenever I hear it.

Too bad you haven't posted any of these "god-tier" PC-88 tracks :( *goes to hear the soundtrack with Hoot*

Ask and ye shall receive:

Seal of Time
Snare of Darkness
Steeling the Will to Fight
Tearful Twilight
Wanderers from Ys

Wanderers from Ys blows my mind every time I hear it. Good god, Ishikawa was a magician with that FM. Listen to that track at around 1:17 and be amazed.

TL;DR: Celceta's soundtrack is overall good, but there are a lot of hit and miss songs. It's very disappointing if you were expecting anything in the quality of The Dawn of Ys, though.

But again, my issue isn't the arrangements per se, it's the fact that they cut out over half of the soundtrack that it was based on. That KILLS me. Ys games should never reuse music in dungeons. I mean that's inexcusable.

http://i.imgur.com/VWbrROu.gif[/IMG]

For Ys I and II this was true until Chronicles, where they knocked it out of the park. Chronicles was AMAZING! For Ys III, I have to give the nod to OiF, though I say that with a heavy heart, and not a little indecision, both are amazing. For Ys IV, most assuredly.

Fun question:

What are everyone's favorite intro tracks from the Ys series?

I'll start with the best remix of a classic:

Dawn of Ys - Falcom Spring 2008

God bless the JDK Band.

Bagels

You got Moxie, kid!
I have fallen madly in love with the Ys series. Oath in Felghana is one of my favorite games ever.

Here's some of my Ys artwork:

A realization: Adol's been having young ladies (and at least one 700 year-old Goddess) swooning for him since the beginning. Of course, he keeps getting older but his "love interests" tend to be around 15-18 years old. That, coupled with what was said much earlier in the thread about Adol being a closet pervert?

1) Ys II - To Make The End Of Battle
2) Ys Origin - GENESIS ~ Beyond The Beginning
3) Ys VI - Release of the Far West Ocean

Gotta get pumped to play an Ys game.

Just reinstalled the free Ys VI version I got from that Groupon deal way back (+ the fan translation). I forgot how much work that was and how damn confusing it is. I'm glad I found the old thread about it. At least now after an hour I managed to do it, looking forward to playing it later.

There's a widescreen patch if you're interested: LINK

It's not a perfect solution. Game world and character sprites are unstretched; but HUD, inventory and portrait art still are. No one's been able to find the values for them yet (or, at least, given it a fair shot).

That why I loved Memories of Celceta. The options that Adol has for conversation in that game are priceless. Like when
Karna falls asleep in front of him, Duren walks in, and one of the options is "And I almost got away with it too!" or something like that.
Adol, pansexual badass.

Yeah, love the shout outs to Genesis, because that one blows my mind.

In my heart of hearts I don't know if anything will ever top Adol's Theme from the Turbografx-CD release. Blew my MIND back in middle school.

I'm starting Oath in Felghana now, and lol the voice acting. The enemies so far are beyond piss-easy but I died a good 10+ times on the statue boss (hard mode). It's a little hard to judge depth to jump over stuff.

edit: oh, I forgot I can temper my equipment. Maybe I should have done that. lol

Even though GameFAQs says Estelle's VA from Tales of Vesperia voices Elena, I'm sure it's Colette's from Symphonia.

I just got into a boss I thought was unbeatable at my current level when I suddendly remembered I could guard... this is why I'm not good at action games, I can't remember all the possible actions in real time :(

Oh well, I should be able to beat it easily tonight. I'm about halfway through.

Though I'm going to miss this level's theme song!

Who needs to guard, just kill them before they kill you :p

Being serious, getting the timing down on the flash guard really helped me stomp the game in the back half. I was never as consistent on the flash step..

I totally mastered the flash step instead, I've been using that so far to get past all bosses, completely forgetting that there was another way of reducing damage.

Thanks! I tried it, but I prefer playing in 4:3.

I tried to play it in 4:3, but running the game in a window w/ max settings causes it to chug badly, even if I drop it to 1024x768. Not at first, but in time the frame rate starts to stutter and gets annoying. Doesn't happen in full-screen.

Unless there's a way to play full-screen with the game neatly nestled between black bars and un-stretched, I guess I'll deal with it.

Sure, there's a way. I'm playing it full-screen. Just choose a 4:3 resolution (I think the highest I could choose was 1400x1050).
You might have to change some settings for your video card, I think they stretch 4:3 images by default.

I did that for Origin when I first played it. Haven't looked at the NVidia drivers but in my AMD drivers at the time I just had to uncheck a scaling option and it worked in 4:3 with black bars.

In regards to the Adol being a perv...

Here his is straight up pimpin'

now if only I could find that image of him creeping out leering at Tia in an alley.

My Ys artbook came in today, it's GLORIOUS, though I wish they had better credits for the artists, one of the Ys II ones looks like Amano, but I don't know if it is or not.

It really is a nice book, though if waifus bother you it get's less waifu the further in you get. Still, Falcom's artists are just so very good it doesn't even matter.

Fuck you, Guilen, you shitty Volvagia ripoff. Most of the time I died when he only had 100 or so health left.

Guilen is the one boss in Oath in Felghana I dislike. The fight just drags on for forever because he has so much health, hitting him is a pain in the ass, and he basically takes less and less damage the further in you get.
