PlayStation 4 Sales Surpass 7.0 Million Units (April 6th), 20.5M Software (April 13)

Previous Gen: Xbox 360 sells more than PS3. Has "inferior" exclusives but better multiplat games. Cheaper than PS3.

"Exclusives don't matter. The 360 has better multiplat games. It's also cheaper. The market has spoken. Sony in trouble, etc"

This Gen: PS4 sells more than XBO. Has "inferior" exclusives but better multiplat games. Cheaper than XBO.

"Omg what are people playing on this thing I don't understand Knack sucks"

I don't know about the inferior exclusives bit when discussing the 360. Aside from Uncharted, I didn't much care for many of the exclusives for the PS3. I got that system mainly for Uncharted and Japanese titles.

But the PS3 outsold the X360, did it not?

Pre console launch: "Devs aren't going to use the extra power of the PS4. It's going to be on parity with Xbone versions"

Post launch: "Omg you can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p when far away. See this stupid chart I have?"

This is more a parallel to the early parts of the gen and NPD threads.

Yup

Sony deserves the success they are having. I'm enjoying my PS4 so much.

I got one for Uncharted, Killzone 2, Valkyrie Chronicles and Ni No Kuni. The rest of the library was worthless for me. Alan Wake on 360 on the other hand... :antonio:

Unless you are talking about Capcom games, most of those Japanese titles were exclusives too. I don't see the difference between first and second party exclusives. Both are tied to 1 system.

Those games are what people want to play. It's going to be the same this year. And probably next year too. Playing a better version of Battlefield 4 is what makes the system worth buying for most people.

Why is that hard to understand?

Why is this going for something "shiny"? This is a completely rational decision making process.

Yup. This is correct and I'm one of those who bought it because BF4 on PS3-360 was not worth it. On PS4 runs like a dream, plays like a wonder and 64 fucking players! If they could only fix some of the lag issues...

Worldwide yes, but just barely and it took the PS3's whole friggin lifecycle to do it.

Of course worldwide, its about the total amounts.

Also lets not forget the ps3 had a bad start and price and was a year later than the 360 and still has surpassed it.

Imagine if ps4 had a years headstart this time....

Took forever to close a 3-8 million gap. The gap will grow for the PS4.

At the current rate of growth I could see a gap of 5M between the two by the end of the year alone. It really depends on how both sell of course but PS4 at 13.5M - 14M by end of year and XB1 at 8.5M - 9M doesn't seem impossible

At the rate PS4 going i can see them selling past 13.5 -14 million easy .
To me it depends on how much Sony can stock up for nov and dec .

Your posts are pointless. Unless you're going to single out individuals.

Makes sense that it took it a while though, it was launched over a year later than Xbox 360 was, not to mention its initial price.

I agree. Just imagine what would've happened if Xbox 360 didn't either have that year head start, or the $200 price advantage over PS3. PS3 would've absolutely demolished Xbox 360 in sales way before E3 2010 or before 2013.

The Playstation brand is still very strong over the Xbox brand, especially outside of the U.S. This time around, PS4 is guaranteed to demolish Xbox One in sales as a whole.

Thoughts on my sales predictions? Reasonable?

E3 (June) - 9 mil
Now supply is finally meeting demand I think a million for both April + May is likely.

September - 11 mil
The summer months are much slower and this will reflect on PS4 sales, although I believe momentum will carry respectable sales over until Destiny launches.

December (end of) - 14-15 mil
With big games like Destiny, Batman, The Order, DriveClub, Call of Duty and possibly Uncharted, not to mention the christmas push I can see Sony hitting between 14-15 million by the end of December.

Yes, but that was Sony's fault for launching the PS4 late and overpriced.
PS3*
But was it really overpriced? at that time PS3 had advanced techs; built-in Wireless adapter, rechargeable battery controllers and Blu-Ray Drive i mean sure it was expensive but i think the hardware inside justify the cost.

Edit: am not talking if its worth it or the value proposition just pure hardware tech vs cost

Q4 should be 5 million at least, bad sign for consoles if it's not.

It was not overpriced for the technology inside; it was overpriced for what consumers were willing to pay for a videogame console. I mean they could include a nuclear reactor inside every PS3 and charge 500 million dollars to play it, but who would buy it? Overpriced.

I wonder if they will go for a 10 million shipped announcement at E3 or stick to sold numbers.

Oh god. E3 is going to be the great return of the 15 minute Sony E3 Sales Chart segment isnt it?

Yeah PS3. Sorry for the typo, will correct.

The price may have been justified, but the system was built too expensive.

I think you're pretty on the money there. 15 million by the end of the year definitely seems doable, what with there being the usual influx of AAA games released in the fall season. Uncharted 4 won't be out this year, but the likes of Destiny, Arkham Knight, AssCree Unity and The Order will help shift a whole lot of units and then some.

Don't you guys think increased availability points to a slowing down of sales, I am talking about both consoles. No one can maintain 1 million per month sales indefinitely, will be surprised if its still near that pace come June.

With games like MLB 14: The Show, the exclusive advertising of Watch Dogs on PS4, along with The Last of Us Remastered, PS4 will definitely get a much bigger boost in sales for May & June.

Not yet ...we have heard of many countries having shortages of Ps4 from GAF posters such as Sweden etc

Sony will know how much they have sent to each country and size of backlogs / demand...Think they can ship what they make easily in 2014...but they may go all over the place...

Man I hope PS4 sales don't start to slow down until next year.

We really need at least one huge seller this generation. One is doing pretty much what I've expected. Losing MS largest market while remaining competitive, but MS never really had a chance to be the worldwide market leader.

And another part of the current argument I don't get is why people are saying PS4 doesn't have games. It has games. Yes they've tended to be up-ported titles, but it has games. The same games that make up a chunk of every years top sellers. Not only that but they look a hell of a lot better on PS4 than they do anywhere else, but of course PC.

Coupled with Sony's inhouse teams and it should be plainly obvious that PS4 is selling for the same reason that any console sells (yes even Wii) it has the games.

It wasn't Sony's "fault", it was their decision. Not exactly the same thing. Catching up to a competitor that launches a year earlier requires doing measurably better; if they performed just as well as Xbox 360, they'd have never caught up.

Seeing that PS3 ended up exceeding, and not merely catching, Xbox 360 sales despite having a full year less on the market implies that, launch-aligned, PS3 sales were better paced.

I believe it was 1.5 years late in Europe/ UK. In the summer after the NA launch, if I recall. And Sony still caught up/ exceeded the 360. The PS brand simply has worldwide appeal. Xbox never did. They captured America last gen because of the price-point (lower) and a head start with consumers and developers. They don't have any of those advantages today, and I would bet only the Xbox faithful are purchasing the system now. Which, as we've seen from TF's lack of any real hardware boost, is a well that's drying up. X1 sales are going to plummet in the summer. Particularly when - as others have indicated - Watchdogs and nearly every other multiplatform games is being showcased on the PS4, first and foremost.

Its quite incredible how much Sony learned from last gen, compared to how much MS shit the bed and took not a single lesson from their competitor's stumbles to heart. Sheer arrogance on the scale of 2006 Sony, yet somehow greater because MS came into this gen with a textbook case - step by bloody step - on how to fuck up your brand.
