We're already getting Mega Lati@s anyway, and probably Mega Sceptile/Marshtomp, seems like overkill to gin up Megas for two already insanely powerful legendaries on top of that.

It looks like they're trying to trickle these announcements out slowly instead of going for one big dump at E3.
It makes you wonder if they are simply trying to side-step the commotion of PS4/X-Bone announcements or if they are saving up their own true bombs.
For the record, these games were certainly announced earlier than most expected. There had been tried and true pattern for announcing new Pokemon games (in Japan) until now, the earliest I thought we'd even hear about anything new was January/February of next year.
Pokemon hasn't really been an annual franchise in Japan until recently, the West's localization waits are what made it like that here. It's definitely one everywhere now, though.

Also, transferring from the originals up to X and Y is an exercise in torture and quite expensive.

Not surprising that it would have the same 3D limitations as X/Y since they're presumably using the same engine. I just hope performance is a bit better this time.

It would make more sense canonically, since the original Ruby and Sapphire are set at the same time as Red/Blue/FireRed/Leafgreen. X&Y are implied to be set many years later. Though I suppose this sort of thing never stopped Game Freak from doing B2W2...
