NPD Sales Results for April 2014 [Up2: XB1/360 hardware, PS4 #1/XB1 #2 best selling]

Vita is such a mammoth, colossal failure. They might as well just make it a Japan only device. For all the doom and gloom the Wii U gets, the Vita is right up there for the most irrelevant platform released in the West. I mean, I think the 32X and Game Gear had more market penetration. Then again, Sony likes to hang onto dying divisions so I guess they'll keep supporting Vita.

And yet, the Vita is getting a ton of English localizations of niche Japanese games, quite possibly more than any other system at the moment. Even if the hardware is bombing, somebody's buying games for the system.

I don't think many people know that the Vita even exists tbh :( Does it even get promoted... at all?

Oh well, it's still a good system~

Oh no, no one knows it exists. Its marketing has been a disaster from day one. No one knows what a Wii U is but awareness of it dwarfs awareness of the Vita I would guess. Solid system with fantastic hardware but poor timing with mobile quickly advancing, among other issues.

I assume this guy is reliable, so here is the answer for those infamous questions

So the lesson here with these types of NPDs is that you don't necessarily have to be Top 10 to be Top Dog?

This certainly puts a new twist on things. Also my prediction for XBO in the 100K range was right on. Just gotta get those PS4 and Wii U numbers...

So at this rate there are probably months worth of Xbox Ones in stores already. Will stores return them or rebox them as Kinect-less packages, just sit on them for months, or what?

I talk to a lot of people at work. And A LOT of people haven't upgraded yet. They are still waiting.

They need games. Good games. And they need them YESTERDAY!

Looking at metacritic they have 21 more games than Xbox One. They average rating is like 72% compared to 67% for Xbox One.

I'm surprised some people consider Titanfall a flop given that it's been number 1 for 2 straight months and it's been number 1/2 in the UK charts pretty much every week since it launched.

Well, I think people just expected it to do waaaay better considering what they put into marketing and hyping it until release :/

There should be a note in the OP regarding Vita's stock until the 2k bundle, at least we wouldn't have hundreds of "lolz Vita is dead" or "whyyyy" throughout the thread.

Learning to read would also help.

This probably explains the Vita situation tbh :/

Wii U at least has Smash Bros. / Zelda for people to look forward to. "Oh, it's on that new Nintendo system" :/ I don't think Vita really had a chance once they decided on the PS Vita name. PSP2 makes so much more sense imo.

APRIL 2007:

Nintendo DS 471k
Wii 360k
PlayStation 2 194k
PlayStation Portable 183k
Xbox 360 174k
Game Boy Advance 84k
PlayStation 3 82k
GameCube 13k

5 platforms over 150k

lol

Looking at the % unit changes for PS4/XONE and comparing it with the % unit changes for PS3/X360, looks like Yusef Mehdi's comments may have some weight after all.

lol

Spoken like someone who doesn't own a Vita. The thing is as darling to gamers as the Dreamcast was. Those who have it, love it. Shame the rest of the world doesn't jump in on it too.

I have one, and I hate it. It's a sexy piece of tech, but the world would be better off without it. I would eat worms to be able to play Vita games on a friggin' TV.

I suppose my punishment for chuckling at its deservedly poor sales is that the Vita TV will never release here.

People who believe the past few Xbox One NPD numbers have been good or even o.k are missing the point - the context from which those of us are saying other wise is that the U.S is the only (important) market where the One can possibly hope to match PS4 numbers, by failing to do so by such a wide margin the One has absolutely no hope of even remotely coming close to PS4 worldwide numbers. You may say that's irrelevant as long as the XOne is doing well on it's own terms but you would be wrong for myriad number of reasons.

It depends on the individual store. More often than not, there's usually a sale to clear excess stock, because they'll probably move sooner than later.

Dat Xbox 360. Uuuf

If Microsoft makes a redesigned 99$ dollars version with Kinect and capitalizes on its new policies. It may become The media box to own. Making it a serious contender against Roku and Apple TV.

so is the Vita 2000 gonna do shit? If retailers willingly let the 1000 go out, they're expecting the 2000 to pick up the slack, right?

Damn thing sells like fucking garbage and it's still getting games. Japan, man.

Completely anecdotal but none of my friends who own a Vita has sold theirs. We all constantly play on it to this day. Sony really has to slash the price of the memory cards, ASAP. It's a major stumbling block for the Vita. Do that then promote it like hell. They might still be able to pull something off.

PS Vita should be renamed to PS Morta. In Roman mythology, Morta was the goddess of death and while she may be the goddess of death, she is still a goddess.

Wii U literally doesn't exist anymore
RIP Wii U

It is funny how often the system is just completely left out of the conversation. Not even on purpose either.

I don't think I've ever seen a Nintendo system so ignored. Virtual Boy sure, but nothing else ... not even close.

I will buy it again once Zelda U comes out.

As of now, yes. Demand has slowed.

They need games, BAD.

PS4 has a handful Free2Play Games, PS4 PS Plus Games, tons of digital indie games, none of which are charted through NPD.

I know you say "People you work with say...."well, people say a lot of things. PS4 has lots of games, and a lot of games that are never going to appear in NPD but are being downloaded, purchased, or "borrowed" through PS Plus.

So.. when is Sony abandoning the PSVita?

When Japan stops buying it I guess.
It's selling multiple times in a week what NA is buying in a month.
That, and the JP line up of releases through the summer is pretty good.
It really is night and day between support in the east and west.

There were basically none available in April cuz of the release of the new one so not surprising.

Previous months were hovering around 10k correct? I guess a drop of half isn't bad when new hardware is due however if it still hovers 10k I still think that's less than the device deserves.

Minecraft will save the Vita

They really need to do a SE 2K unit for the launch of that and market it as true minecraft on the go.

If the PS4 is only around 200k, then it looks like everything is trailing off for the consoles. I wondered if we'd have another Wii U situation: a bang out of the gate and then losing steam once all the dedicated had picked up theirs.

O god

Aren't you the New Zealand guy ?
