Totally disagree with Halo 4 being higher than 3.
(Could complain about every COD being higher than better games imo too, but that's just me and COD not clicking.) Sorta agree with most they put up in the top section

wii sports > galaxy 2?

ass creed 2 > galaxy 2?

Rock band > galaxy 2?

minecraft > galaxy 2?

GALAXY > GALAXY 2?

fuck this list

If portal 2>portal then certainly SMG2>SMG. I mean, sure SMG was the one that really set the slate but 2 was superior in almost every way. I think Portal 1 is better than the sequel but if we are going with ''bigger and better>the original that came up with the concept'' then SMG2 should be the number 1 on the list. Am I making any sense here? :lol

Portal 2 didn't have even near the impact the first one did imho even tho the sequel certainly had much more content.

totally agree.

Fuck this list

edit: Double fuck them for not having Reginleiv on it even though it's a US only list. :p

If Dark Souls was the last game you ever played you could stop gaming and be satisfied. That's why I think it's the best game of the generation.

I get they can't please everyone, and I honestly would never expect this list to match up with my tastes, but it's so weird that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is nowhere on the list. It's such a fantastic game and easily one of the most rewarding and satisfying fighters I've ever played.

galaxy over galaxy 2 is bizarre.

galaxy being "fresher", since it was the unveiling of the concept and not the refining of it is the only reasoning I can really think of behind it.
This is just me so it might not count for everyone, but here we go:

- Better hub. I absolutely loved the observatory. I loved how with each grand star, the ship literally feels more alive, whereas in SMG2 I found it to be rather shallow (just some new characters after each world). But besides that, I just did not care that much for the Mario faced ship. Might be me.

- Better music. Completely subjective, of course. But I'm probably not alone in this. I remember almost all of SMG's OST, whereas in SMG2 I literally only remember the song from the world where you first meet Yoshi. But then again, I'm probably mistaking several SMG2 songs with the first one

- Bigger worlds a la SM64. SMG2 might have more and therefore varied worlds, it's very linear and straightforward. Not that it's a bad thing, but I prefer a somewhat larger world where you sometimes can just walk where you want to.

But the biggest "flaw" of SMG2 is simply the lack of something new in my modest opinion. Sure, platforming wise it's slightly better, but that's were the pros end for me. I found SMG2 toI appeal too much on nostalgia. The level select just screams Super Mario Bros. and there's even an entire level remade from a previous 3D Mario. I'm not going to spoil that for others who haven't played it yet, but you know.

Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm not. But all I know for certain is that I enjoyed SMG1 more. Towards the ending of SMG2 I actually felt a little burnt on the Galaxy (probably since I replayed SMG1 just before SMG2 release). I honestly don't even want a SMG3.

There are some strange choices with the list overall, but damn it if I'm not satisfied with that top 20. So glad to see Rock Band so high up as that is my personal choice for the best of last gen. Super Mario Galaxy is a great choice for #1.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
I can't argue with that top 20.

You don't like The Last of Us?

I just didn't find it as amazing as a lot of other people did, and that whilst it was a generally solid game, all the constituent parts (gameplay and drama) had been done better in other games. So it's a 7/10 sort of game for me, but not a highlight of the generation.

SMG at #1 is a pleasant surprise.

And then I glance slightly upwards

5. Fallout 3
4. Skyrim

aaaagh... alright, whatever. It's your list. Still, though.

Yeah you're right, it should be higher*, when people look back at the last generation Wii Sports will surely be one of the first games to come mind.

It hit at a lot of points in IGN's "innovation, influence, longevity, excellence, and uniqueness" criteria, hell it's influence alone would earn it a place in the top 20, it's still being felt today with things like the recent kinnect situation.

*Said for a minimal amount of comic and dramatic effect, not seriously.

Okay but this shouldn't be most influential or important games. I guess I didn't bother to look at the criteria but Top 100 only makes me think of the Best 100 games (in terms of gameplay/quality mostly, but I suppose the fun-factor of wii sports should put it on the list, but probably not in the top 20)

Portal 2 and Mario Galaxy being top two makes this list automatically awesome.

I would have like to have seen Portal and Galaxy 2 higher, but whatevs.

edit - just realized FTL isn't on here because it's not eligible. I guess I can live with that as a reason..

I'm a little perplexed by Portal 2 being number 2, but I guess that's probably just the result of the overall crowdsourcing. I doubt it was anyone's particular #1 of the generation, but was probably on enough voters' lists to make it that high.

As far as Super Mario Galaxy being number one.... GOOD JOB, IGN!! I wouldn't have expected that, but of all the games to be released last gen, that's probably the single one I would point to as the overall best, most diverse, most creative single-player experience I played all last gen. I can't think of another game I would rather see in that spot.

And before the SMG2 supporters come in, I'll agree that SMG2 was a very good game and could also have gone in that spot... if SMG didn't blow us away first!

A Wii game being #1 is wonderful.

Sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due. The Wii was the "core game" underdog for the entire generation and in general the system was often ridiculed. However, in the end it had a solid library of some of the best exclusive experiences you could find.

The recognition is nice.

Uh, SMG gets a fuckload of recognition. Sometimes too much tbh.

It's more about Wii representation in general than the game itself.

SMG is a bit of an obvious pick but I'll take it.

Also, as a genre game, how could you not be happy about all that recognition? Mario Galaxy pretty much single handedly kept the 3D Platformer genre alive and injected a whole lot of freshness into it. It's impressive.

Well that list was quite a rollercoaster ride. IMO, the Top 20 at least makes sense somewhat. 21 - 100, on the other hand, was complete nonsense.

It's right on the money, RDR had a better story and personality compared to both those games. I believe the actually multiplayer worked too.

It was empty. There were too few NPCs, small towns and it was copy & pasta wilderness. There were no bikes, cars or boats despite existing at that time, only horse and carriage. You couldn't even swim.

I agree that the story and personality were excellent in RDR and I enjoyed it very much. However, the game was very lacking in features compared to GTA V, heck even IV packed a lot more. Maybe they had more time to work on story and personality because the scope was so small in comparison.

I don't like this list at all and completely disagree with it..........but that's okay. People would probably frown on me for having Demon's Souls, The Last of Us, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock and Arkham Asylum as my top 5. The Halo 4 > Halo 3 thing really bugs me though, that's the only thing that really pisses me off.

I find Rock Band to be an odd choice. Not because I don't think it belongs there, but because it's not Rock Band 3 instead. Even if you want to base it on the soundtrack itself, you can just import the vast majority of 1 & 2 into 3 anyway. More importantly, 3 added a new instrument and pro mode, which I loved for the drums. It's not like Rock Band 2 or 3 really took away much of anything like some sequels do to somehow make it inferior...right? Or am I forgetting something?

The Chuck Norris of Peace
They got the first one right, but outside of that, its pretty terrible imo. Not enough Wii-love here - and where are the handheld games?

Yea Wii Sports is better than Dark Souls and Demons Souls

lmao
They're completely different types of experiences with completely different goals. And, I'd say Wii Sports was more influential too.

It's not wrong to put either above the other depending on what your values are.

Yes just yes. ME2 was probably the best of the series. God that game was fantastic.
It improved the combat and had some better character writing, but everything else was a step down. That feeling of a galactic frontier with new planets, races, technology, history and so on to discover around every corner was gone. Everything about the setting just felt so "done and established" in ME2 and 3. The stripped down RPG-elements were kind of dissappointing as well.

They clearly took impact to account when they made this list. That's why Minecraft and Wii Sports are up there, and that's why SMG1 is higher than SMG2. Considering that, it's a very solid list.
