Mario Kart 8 Sells More Than 1.2 Million Units Worldwide Over First Weekend

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
How? You're a ghost now.

Also, if I'm in hell right now, Satan really needs to step his shit up. Work is more torturous than this.
I believe there's this transitional period.. 'Limbo' or something.

Sure, but this definitely feels like the start of a turnaround.

Also my friend bought a wii u at launch but has kept it in the closet since then. This is the first game he's buying for it since Nov 2012. Even if hardware sales don't explode, it's still increasing the amount of active users.

But what other upcoming games are going to post similar results (which are great but amazing when you look at them objectively).

You have Smash in 5/6 months but what about in between? It's too early to call anything tbh.

Message to Iwata and his WiiU strategy: A good game with good graphics, functional online, community features and decent marketing campaign sells great! Who could have thought?

I bet this will have decent legs. It will probably sell well in the winter as well, if they have reasonably priced bundles.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
Not bad for a weekend, What they really need now is word of mouth to start selling Wii Us for the next few months.
All Wii U owners need to do now, is invite buddies for multiplayer mayhem sessions. I did my first local MP session yesterday at a friend's: there's nothing like that on the market. Absolutely nothing. Pure riots, screaming and laughter :)

If you dont have a WiiU yet, not only you are missing on MK8 but also on the great games that came out for it during the whole year and half that you kept saying "the wiiu has no games"

Like Wind Waker, Mario 3d world, Pikmin 3, Lego Undercover, ZombiU, Mario+Luigi, VC games, Eshop Games, etc

And i do have a feeling that Nintendo will really be the star of the show this E3. So in my opinion if you like videogames you should buy a WiiU NOW

You mention all of those titles with absolutely no sign of Wonderful 101?

For shame bro, for shame.

Mario Kart is only second to Pokémon these days, isn't it? These are Nintendo's two biggest IPs by far.

Not really impressive numbers imo, but considering MK is a leggy title as it gets, this may help the Wii U mantain and edge over X1.

I don't doubt that possilbility of an 8K bump, but the way it was said in your previous post made it seem like you had a hard number.

Just wanted to be sure.

Nope, was just me assuming a weekly average based on what I've seen in various PAL threads and the fact WiiU did around 150k in its first 12 months in UK (which averages 2.8k a week including holiday bumps) given it's had a hard time in the UK as of late I can't imagine it's grown much (possibly even shrunk) but I'm open to being proved wrong!

Still, it's the US and Japan bump/figures, we're all really waiting for.

That's the thing. I don't have a Wii U because honestly, none of those games save MK8 and Smash interest me enough to buy a system. Furthermore, the price of a Wii U is still the biggest barrier to hardcore gamers sitting on the fence like myself. This is getting off topic, but Nintendo fans need to realize like with MS, Nintendo has some deeper issues with Wii U not selling outside of games and price at least to the casual crowd.

1.2 millions in three days for a dying console

consider the context. Damn impressive i say

And well deserved. There are still quite a lot of people who will get it in the coming weeks and I hope this positive attitude will boost the image of the Wii U some more. Not saying there's nothing wrong with Wii U, but it does deserve some more attention than it did untill now imo.

I understand Wii U circumstances, but still I was expecting over 2m considering the last home console Mario Kart is the best selling non-bundled game of all time.

It's not really a front loaded game though compared to other franchises.
So we just need to wait.

3DW had a pretty mediocre first week, like 100K in Japan, and less than 200K first month in NA I believe. Now it was at 2.21 million with like a 33%ish attach rate recently.

And 3DW wasn't bundled. So we'll see.

Great sales but i don't get why some people are so shocked by this, its not like the WiiU has new games coming out every week, plus its Mario Kart.

I'm happy it's doing well, Nintendo needs some success with the wiiu to keep them motivated to develop games for it. I still think it will be one of the least successful MK games though.

You're ignoring important variables.

This game deserves these sales. Fantastic game.

Actually got a friend who thought the gamepad was for the wii, to want a wii u. He even bragged on fb that he was playing mk8.

Great numbers, I didnt pick it up myself as im currently engrossed in Xenoblade but I will get thsi eventually.

For comparison, what were the first week figures for Titanfall?

Reaffirms my suspicion that Mario Kart has become Nintendo's biggest franchise outside Pokemon.

It hits all the buttons and attracts everyone, male and female, old and young, casual and core game players. Even the Wii U is made a bit more generally attractive once Mario Kart is out.

It's also their franchise with the best online play.

As much as I dislike Polygon, I sincerely doubt they ever even implied that this 1.26M figure was how much the game would ever sell.

Fantastic news. Hopefully Nintendo continue developing downloadable content for the game to extend the life and fix some of the messier modes (battle, namely). But it's a solid game and Nintendo deserves a financial success given the critical acclaim some of the Wii U first-party titles have given.

Same as PS4 and X1 right now anyway. Especially PS4 since the only remaining big exclusive for this year they have now is Driveclub. Obviously E3 is next week so the three companies are going to show some new unnanounced games to be released this year but ya'.

like I'm not even understanding how some of you are saying this is bad. In 3 days it reached 1.2 million. That's amazing without even regarding the fact its on the Wii U

While I agree with this, I find the idea to "project" MK8 sales and show them alongside other MK LTD sales defeats the purpose of the comparison. Probably an opening week comparison chart would've been better

I hope it does well. It shits all over the Wii version and is easily my favourite Mario Kart to date (hell, I'm actually hoping for DLC, and that doesn't happen often!)

I still don't think it's going to turn the Wii U's fortunes around much, what with Smash Wii U not being until 6 months after everyone already played the 3DS version, but considering how miserable the environment for the console and its games were up until now this is really great news. :D

I mean, the game is still plenty random. There's juts a lot of new elements added in that place emphasis on good driving instead of just getting red shells and sloppily boosting.

But yo, for real, red shells still fuck up everyone's day.

I don't mean to imply that the random elements are gone, just that they are better balanced out by skill-based advantages, like you mentioned. With MK Wii, I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop when I got into 1st or 2nd place. Most wins came when you lingered around 3rd/4th and waited for the leaders to get knocked back by some random BS. That still happens sometimes with MK8, but it's a lot rarer because of difficult shortcuts (like the one in the Thwomp level), the coin mechanic, better defensive items, rarer drops for Blue Shells/Lightning, and the ability to keep your item after being hit. All of those things reward skill.

My overall point though is that a game can be more competitive and still appeal to a wide audience. Developers don't have to water down game balance and give everyone a participation ribbon to get sales.
