Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

Doesn't look earth shattering but i'm sure it will be still fun.

Thing is, when they showed more and more Watchdogs gameplay, people went "meh GTA with a bit of hacking" besides the downgrade/graphics discussion and then it still sold pretty well.

I guess it's going to be the same for Destiny. Solid gameplay + know studio + nice SciFi design + huge PR/ad campaign = success.

In one sentence:

The thread where Gaf was incredulous/furious that Watch Dogs sold 4 million week one was funny, yeah.

? It turned out to actually be an alright game and the hate was really for nothing, at least not the levels it experienced.
Those posts were acknowledging the high probability that the game would not live up to the hype. They just came in a hyperbolic, unqualified terms but that's standard on forums. But they were absolutely right. "Alright" is a problem. Anything less than great is a problem for these massive games.

Lack of personality is right. Enemies look like they're just standing around until they see the player. They don't seem to be patrolling or interacting with each other.

It's weird seeing that considering the Halo games have had pretty good AI.

Yeah, I totally get the tradeoff and why people would use it. It seems to try to mimic the cost/benefit of a real life situation. I prefer to use it myself in shooters. I guess I just don't see why people would be upset by it if it's completely optional.

Aesthetically, there's nothing wrong with it if hip fire is accurate up to a certain range and ADS is used for longer ranges. It's only when it affects movement and hip fire that I find it to be a bore.

Again, I don't mind it in PvE modes, but shooting other players with it is very unsatisfying , especially in games where you die in less than a second.

Trolling right?

Quake, Tribes, Counter-Strike, etc

For consoles, aim assist, aim adhesion, and other tricks to create fine control out of imprecise controls of thumbsticks can help to make a player be very accurate, so long as they perfect it.

ADS is a crutch, slows down gameplay and marginalizes the skill of shooting and moving.
ADS is more like in the real world.. You don't see many soldiers etc. shootin' from the hip - accuracy comes from ADS and yes it slows you down, like in the real world, and it feels more real in video games.

I am not disappointed with how the game looks, and personally I think it's early and unfair to criticize a game in its Alpha stage. When I will possibly get my hands on the game (and most likely, sometime after release as I am not from the press) then I will make constructive criticism and conclusions with some foundation.

Everything about this game and games like this(Borderlands) just look like they're taking the standard FPS formula and attaching numbers and a carrot on a stick to arbitrarily make fights take long, put in more filler content and just provide a dull experience.

If you look at a raid or even a dungeon in WoW, they have the holy trinity to make the experiences different from each other. You do have minor mechanics to do which tries to make it unique. Everything I've seen so far of this game is 'clickclickclickclick' stand behind cover and reload because the AI isn't aggressive enough to go after you. And what is the other guy in your party doing? Likely the exact same thing.

It just looks like a treadmill. I hope they show something good at E3 because everything I've seen about Destiny just makes me think I'm TOLD to think it's great not that they've shown that it's great.

I play video games for fun. ADS is less fun to me, it's that simple.

Not to mention that Counter-Strike feels far more realistic than CoD or Battlefield. Original Rainbow Six, Operation Flashpoint, ARMA series, America's Army, those are far more realistic, and don't rely on ADS.

I'm about 95% certain he's been directed to keep an even tone. He's playing an AI.

This! So much! For the life of me I can't understand the bitching about the voice acting. It's what they are going for people! You might not like it, but that doesn't make it objectively bad!

Gunplay looked amazing. The AI looked fucking stupid though... like taking "cover" in plain sight?

I kind of agree, but I think it's best to wait until beta to draw any larger conclusions. It's really hard to get a feel for a game that's meant to be a massively-multiplayer online experience through 1-2 player Alpha videos, and short, small group gameplay tidbits. At this point I'm willing to chalk it up to poor marketing, but time will tell.

He doesn't fit. There are plenty of people who have played robotic AIs and they've done much better performances than what's on display here.

In this Part 4 (the only one I saw) it looks pretty meh. He isn't doing almost anything, just going here and there without exciting things to do.

Do we know what is this dude's job or position?

Looks pretty mediocre just like Halo. I am so sick of FPS's these days. There does not seem to be anything unique even in the setting. Looks like a high res version of Borderlands minus the interesting guns.

This isn't a standard FPS ie: COD/BF.

This is a loot based FPSMMO with HP bar. Just run up and spray+throw explosion at everything.
Nobody got time for aiming like a scrub, and KILLING one enemy.
People have loots to collect.

But yeah, ADS slows you down too much for loot/time ratio.
And the problem with watching someone using ADS all the time makes the whole gameplay looks boring.

Sorry, but this is a lot of nonsense.

This isn't a twitch based shooter such as UT or QT3 where ADS would impact the pace.

I don't think Bungie ever set out to reshape fight encounters though. I mean, I wish they did, especially since I don't like modern shooter mechanics other than Halo's; nevertheless, Destiny's main attraction is supposed to be its social adventure aspect. You'd explore a large, ever-evolving world and encounter other players along the way. You can group up with them and show off your gear and go find new ones, or you may choose to go off on your own journey and "create your own story".

It's a rather basic premise that could be incredibly enjoyable if it was accomplished. The problem is just that - it sounds good on paper, but they continue to show everything except Destiny's selling point.

The more I read and see of this game, the less interested that I get.

This post says it best. They've promised a monumental game but have failed to show anything that delivers on that promise for over a year now. It's amusing how leaks like these do a better job of showing us what it is than the devs themselves do.

I don't think anybody really wants the game to be bad, but if it ends up bombing commercially, Bungie and Activision wont have anyone to blame but themselves.

As much as I hate Halo and Bungie games in general, this game will not bomb. Activision's marketing will be through the roof and people will buy it on hype alone.

Not feeling it... oh well. Might pick it up for a discount. From the looks of things this game might have a hard time reviewing well, it just looks boring.

Hope things work out for it. I have people that want to play the game with me. Come on, Bungie, what the hell?

Part 4 video I think looks brilliant.

Exploring the wilds, seamless random encounters, Sparrow driving (1st time from player perspective) and… DANCING!!

can't wait.
