Which do you prefer: Super Mario Galaxy series or Super Mario 3D series?

I prefer Galaxy. I think "3D" worked REALLY well in the context of a 3DS game; Land is a perfect game that you can just pick up and play a couple levels for a few minutes in between something while you're on the go, and it shows off the capabilities of the 3DS perfectly. But after playing 3D World I feel like I can definitely say that Galaxy is just a superior series when judged head-to-head with the 3D games.

Galaxy by far. Galaxy 1 at that, I want my hub world, exploratory playgrounds and NO time limits.

If I want 2D Mario I'll play 2D Mario.

Honestly both Mario galaxy feels boring after playing 3D world. Too much filler shit that ruins the actual platforming.

ALso, they're both as linear as each other really, people would like you to believe that Galaxy is more like 64 but they're wrong, and I do miss the openness of 64 but these are Mario at his best.

Yeah, I never understand why people say this especially with 2.

Most levels in Galaxy 1 are linear but start in a small hub-like area that branches off to the other paths (like Honeyhive Galaxy) which I guess is where the sentiment comes from; but unlike in 64, you can only do the mission you selected in Galaxy (unless that specific mission has a hidden star).

I like both, but Galaxy. When I play one of the SM3D games, I play a few levels and then put it down for long stretches. I've never finished either of them. But with the Galaxy games, once I've started playing I can't stop. Burned through them both multiple times.

Galaxy forever.

Hated the first 3DS one. Have yet to play the Wii U one. I think there's a chance I'll like it, but Galaxy was sublime.

Both Galaxy games were outstanding (ignoring the green star missions from 2).

Only 3D World was great out of the othertwo (30 fps Mario doesn't feel right).

3D for me. Galaxy was fun, but it felt incredibly disjointed at times. The music, however, was very good, better than 3D World, IMO. Even so, neither the platforming nor the amount of content in the Galaxy games ever reached what was available in 3D World.

When it comes to 3D Mario games, I think 3D World is 2nd best, with the best being 64.

From an objective standpoint, neither are better than the other. But personally, the whole reason I play videogames at all is to go on adventures. Galaxy had that grand quest feel that, combined with the engaging gameplay and awesome level design and music makes it my favorite Mario series ever

Yeah, can't really pick here. Mom VS Dad thread.

implying that you...

why

My mom sold my Wii, 360, Dreamcast, Ps1 and PS2, GBA, including games for all of those for like 100€ while I was at university.
Something like 200 games easily.

So yeah I'd probably pick my Dad...err Mario Galaxy.

For now I'd say Galaxy, but I have yet to play 3D World.

I can't imagine anything being better than Galaxy 2, though. That was a hell of an awesome game.

I like both series. I don't have a problem with having a Galaxy game every now and then with 3D World/Land in between. I enjoy them far more than the 2D games.

No preference, really. Galaxy finished what Sunshine started with paring the exploration way back from what it was from 64 by forcing you into a fairly set path, as well as doing well with minimizing the need to babysit the camera, so the 3D subseries is only fundamentally different in that it has a timer on every level instead of some of them.

Oh that... well I was going to write "midway between Wii and Wii U" but then I remembered two things:

1) Mobile technology is advancing rapidly. The technology jump from 2010 to 2012 is significantly larger than 2003 to 2005, for example. So they would be able to get similar parts to Wii U by 2015-2016, for about the same price they would've paid for "10 year old console technology" used in the GBA(SNES)/DS(N64)/3DS(GCN/Wii).

2) They want a unified software platform, to allow easy sharing of development tools and such. Since the next home console will definitely be more powerful than Wii U, the next handheld will have to be capable of more if the next home console and handheld are to share development tools.

I like the Galaxy games more than 3D Land but I like 3D World more than the Galaxy games and want more games like that.

So I guess the Super Mario 3D series?

I mean, they're not really all that different.

I absolutely adore both, but I think I'd give the upper hand to the Galaxy series simply for the grandiose. It just felt more epic to me.

I think if a lot of people went back and played Galaxy after 3D World they might find it to be closer than they think.

I like both a great deal, but if I had to pick I'd give Galaxy the edge. There's something almost indefinably magical about it, that extra sprinkling of pixie dust that makes a really great game into a classic. 3D World is lovely, charming and beautifully made, but it's a little less daring.

It *is* great, though, and it's a 'purer' platformer in a lot of ways. For me, Galaxy strikes that perfect balance between giving you that extra freedom of movement while still offering the joy of conquering a really tightly designed obstacle course.

I know people love the more open playgrounds of 64 and Sunshine (Delfino Plaza in particular is just incredible fun to mess around in) but I don't think either of them is as consistently entertaining as the Mario games that have gone since. I think there are other open-world games that scratch a similar itch, and that's perhaps why Nintendo's stepped away slightly from that format.

Does anyone know if we'll see more 3D Land games for WiiU? Or is there a new title coming? 3D Land isn't the "main" Mario game for WiiU is it?

This is impossible to answer.

For one, I love Galaxy's creativity is amazing. Every world is so well realized.

But 3D World has incredibly fun platforming stages that seem fresh every time.

I guess Galaxy is more "thematic" while 3D World is more "mechanic", if that makes sense. Both have insanely creative levels and sublime platforming, and their both beautiful games.

I hate to say it, but I never played Galaxy 2. I know, I know. I'll get on it shortly.

Mario Galaxy.

3D World was a huge step back for the series. Would've been fine if it was released in the middle of the generation but the first 3D Mario?

I like both series. I don't have a problem with having a Galaxy game every now and then with 3D World/Land in between. I enjoy them far more than the 2D games.

The problem is that they are made by the same development team. Assets and development tools from Galaxy were used in Galaxy 2; likewise for 3D Land and 3D World. That is why there was only 2 years between Galaxy/3D Land and Galaxy 2/3D World. If they had to create new development tools, environments and assets for every game, we would be waiting many years between Mario games.

I love the 3D series (World is amazing), but Galaxy is on whole another level. The sheer creativity in those 2 masterpieces is astounding. Nintendo, please, HD galaxy collection now.

I almost can't believe I'm saying this—I absolutely adore the Galaxy games, and always have—but I actually think I prefer Super Mario 3D World.

Mario Galaxy is all about spectacle. It's about playing with gravity and transversing creative environments in an interesting way. And it's great.

But Galaxy just doesn't control quite as tightly as Mario 3D World, and as a result, it's less about skill and more about discovery.

And discovery is a great gameplay element. But it doesn't quite compare to thrill of making my way unscathed across one of Mario 3D World's later obstacle courses.

(I'm talking purely about Mario 3D World though. 3D Land was crap)

Galaxy games are better because they are immediately groundbreaking and innovative, while 3D World takes longer to get to the really fresh levels. The last 4 or 5 worlds of 3D World are so good. Also, Galaxy was easier. All three games are better than 64 and Sunshine tbh.
