Doom announced (id/Bethesda, PC/PS4/XB1, idtech6, 1080p/60fps, gore), first details

Is there anything the BFG edition has that the original doesn't?

Well, I completed BFG recently and I found it to be far more enjoyable than vanilla DooM3.

Appart from the differences pointed out by other gaffers, the speed of the player character is increased, can hold more ammo now, and there is more ammo scattered throughout the maps.

There are more enemies, making it more run'ngun than vanilla DooM3.

I could not even complete DooM3, but BFG got me hooked until the end

But worst of all, is BFG's lack of modding, whereas there are tons of great mods for DooM3.

Yeah that was a deal breaker for me.

There are mods that can increase enemy count and various other gameplay enhancements, anyways.

I thought BFG was pretty much just a port with some lite graphical improvements but they rebalanced the whole game?

Yeah, they made it easier. Practically "unlimited" ammo, they removed some occasions of monsters spawning behind you, etc in order to make the game "less frustrating". As if Doom 3 was frustratingly difficult!

It's a weak remaster of the original. It's ok as a port of Doom 3 for 360/PS3 since the game wasn't available on them, but on PC it's hardly better than the original and in various ways it can be argued it's actually worse. Certainly not the way to go when you are remastering something!

Not a Doom fan but I'm encouraged that its PC/PS4/XB1 only. This gives me hope Bethesda is OK with this model and Fallout 4 will follow suite.

Sounds like design decisions to accommodate controllers. Hmmmmm :(

The question of if kbm is the optimal user interface for a shooter is funny, the presumption that there must be a better alternative is false, there really isn't, but logically, you'd think there should be. It shouldn't be so hard to make one given kbm wasn't ever intended for controlling an avatar in a virtual 3D environment with a reticule.

I guess it's just partially that we're so accustom to pointing with a mouse that it's second nature in a way that a gaming specific item would never be, even if it were theoretically superior.

Wow! I had no idea it was that bad.

Are the extra missions even worth getting the BFG edition for?

Flicking a mouse is way faster than tilting a stick until a 180 is done. :(

Just because one is faster than the other, it doesn't mean it's impossible to do.

Those fractions of a second don't matter in a single player game anyway ;)

Was wondering something similar. Also, that guy surely knows how to get banned.

Ah yes. Banned from every Doom forum, not sure if DoomWorld too but he doesn't post there anymore. Sgt Mark IV is a swell guy, racist, sexist, homophobic, encouraging others to commit suicide AND a holocaust denier. He's a heck of a guy.

Yes because controller players have such difficulty turning around and shoot whatever's behind them. :(

To be fair, that turnspeed is not limited to controllers. When i used to play almost exclusively on PC (and i played many FPS games), i often set the turning speed to lower sensitivity to be able to aim more precise. I remember that in for example Medal Of Honor Allied Assault, i had to slide my mouse across the table a few times to do a full 360 degree turn. Having slower turning speed like that made my aim much better. It comes down to personal prefrences. The same thing goes for playing with a controller. I dont think there are many FPS games where i play with the default controller sensitivity. Feels like i almost always have to turn it down.

Nice guy!

It's not THAT bad, it just isn't what it should and could have been.

As for your question; not really. Some youtube dude: half of Doom 3 BFG's Lost Mission is Doom 3 maps reorganized

It's some quick and dirty copy pasting of Doom 3's original maps in remixed order.

Ehh I was expecting a little more.. I think I'll pass and just go play D3 again.

It's definitely true that some people have a tough time adapting to controls they aren't familiar with.

It's not about adapting one self to a new way of controlling a game. Console shooters are inherently slower than PC shooters. There are very few fast paced shooters on consoles. And then you even have stuff like slower zombies in the console version of Left 4 Dead or slowed movement speed in Unreal 3.

Were you at the QuakeCon conference?

What kind of developer announces a beta 1+ years before actually being playable? This is insane.

Yeah, I was in the press queue.

Betas like that have been done before. Look at Ghost Recon: Future Soldier for example.

Bummer.

How did the graphics look? (yes, graphics whore :3)

Romero was at Quakecon, hopefully he has a better opinion of Doom than he did of Doom 3!
What did he say about D3?

I'm really hoping this new Doom doesn't forget about its horror roots. :\

Really, try Dirty Bomb or CS:GO with a controller. These games are downright unplayable with a controller and are much better for it
I play competitive CS:GO with a 360 pad (that game has native controller support by the way) and do just fine. I'm better with m/k, or was anyway as it's been some time, but what you are saying is not true. I can also strafe jump with a controller

There are plenty of reasons why Doom was demoed with a controller at quakecon, none of which automatically mean the game is compromised in any way. Fan reactions are overwhelmingly positive in a crowd that champions a different control method - that should say it all for now.

It's a bit disappointing that this pad discussion and bashing is still going on as it detracts from the actual discussion of the preview.

Man I want to see a real-deal controller vs KBM showdown. None of this internal testing crap, I want a big fucking tournament with the greatest players going head to head to prove once and for all who's the king of FPSs.

Okay maybe it'll just wind up like a Globetrotters vs. Generals game but I still want to see it.

I would not want to be on the controller side then xD
No problem with playing FPS on consoles here btw, i love my Halo and Killzone, but a mouse beats a stick any day. No contest really.

There's a weapon wheel? You can hold more than two fucking guns?

Bring it on! The original Doom is, to this day, my favorite videogame of all time. Despite how the majority felt about it, I even liked Doom 3 for what it was. My hype levels are through the roof for this, with just a hint of caution due to Zenimax being Zenimax.

I emailed him a list of questions at one point (he used to have a button on his website where you could do this - might still have it) and I asked him about Doom 3. He wasn't overly critical, but said it would have been very different if he had done it and in a playthrough of the first episode of Doom 1 for the 20th anniversary he said he found it predictable and didn't finish it.

I can't wait to try this game, but ...

Standing ovation ?
I think I have different tastes.

For the 20th time, the ovation came at the end of the demo. They were cheering for the whole presentation, not the arm ripping, which happened half way through.

It wouldn't even matter if they were. Violence in video games is awesome

This! If you don't get off on this, doom might not be your franchise...

I so want to see the procedural chainsaw damage. I don't know if they might be shooting themselves in the foot with this reveal policy. I mean the image I got in my head now of this game can't possibly be met. Way too many good comments left unrealistic expectations, and I bet I'm not alone with this...

IGN asked Romero about Doom 3 at some point in this video.

He said he actually couldn't finish it because it became too predictable and "if a game is predictable, it's boring". He referred to how the game would place certain weapons, and you knew a certain monster would pop out once you acquired it.

They also asked him how he would handle Doom 4, and he mentioned providing more player choice (in which levels to complete and when to complete them) and a greater emphasis on the competitive multiplayer.
