SHOUT! Factory just announced on Twitter that Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger will be getting a US DVD release, making it the first season of Super Sentai to be officially sold in the United States.

Zyuranger was the 16th season of the long running TV show Super Sentai, which is most notable for being adapted into the 1st season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Unlike the Degrassi/Saved by the Bell clone that MMPR tried to be, Zyuranger was a high fantasy series involving 170 million year old warriors reviving from the dead to fight a witch that attacks modern day Japan.

To see the differences between MMPR and Zyuranger check out this video series.

A question. In almost every sentai series the heroes spend a lot of time in those transformations. Why villains never took the opportunity to attack them? I mean, those monsters could easily kill all the Power rangers with a simple gun.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Holy shit it was the 16th season? Had no idea

Began in the 70s man.
The preceeding season, Chojin Sentai Jetman is one of the best. I hope they release that one too.

It's implied that the transformations are instant.
Zyuranger actually doesn't waste as much time as PR did. There's no "Mastodon! Pterodactyl! Triceratops! Sabertooth Tiger! Tyrannosaurus!" sequence. They grab their belts, shout "Dino Buckler" and boom they power up.
Though they do a roll call while transformed so... probably too powerful to instantly kill or something *shrugs*

Oh yeah, I'm in. If I could get a US release of the original Japanese Giant Robo along with it, i would be...hell I don't even know. This, and Batman '66 will make me very poor later this year.

Yeah, check some of these older series out:

Interesting to note that these two series (Sun Vulcan and Bioman) were almost the first Power Rangers.
Stan Lee (yes, that one) had shown interest in bringing over Sun Vulcan waaay back in the 80s. Nothing came of it of course...
Then, Haim Saban wanted to bring over Bioman, even making a pilot. That didn't work either. Somewhere deep in a vault is that Bioman pilot.

Also, I'm not sure if this is true, but Saban wanted Power Rangers to start with this series, Jetman. But they chose to do Zyuranger because dinosaurs.

I've heard of Bioman and Jetman being potential adaptations, but not Sun Vulcan. There was also that 6-episode Dynaman gag dub.

Has the red leader ever been a woman in all these decades ?

The 33rd season Samurai Sentai Shinkenger had one... who showed up late in the series to replace her brother... and wasn't really a permanant replacement...

The only theropod in the Zyu-team is the Tyrannoranger and the only other dino is Triceratops (Dragons don't count). All of the Jetman rangers represent theropods.

Oh... as you can tell I am not an expert.

It was this, Tiny Toon Adventures, Darkwing Duck, Tale Spin, and DuckTales after school. The true golden age of afterschool television.

edit: oh shit, and ANIMANIACS.

There have been many female leaders, but the red ranger of a titular team being female has only happened once or twice (Shinkenger and it's Power Rangers adaptation). Power Rangers SPD also has a female red ranger, but she and her team were mostly background characters.

This too.
Kakuranger and Timeranger (and by extension their PR counterparts Alien Rangers and Time Force) had female leaders. However, they were White and Pink respectively.

Those aren't teenagers with attitude. Those are well behaved and disciplined young adults.

To be fair, that describes the Power Rangers as well.
They were clearly adults playing teenagers, and they had no attitude. They were respected members of the community.
If they were teenagers with attitude, it would be something like this: http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/comic/merry-200th-strip

Geki vs Burai fights was always better than Jason vs Tommy fights. But MMPR was better than Zyuranger, almost every zyuranger episode has a kid of the week and they're damn terrible on acting.

Please released Dairanger next please.

Real talk. The Jason-Kimberly-Zach human megazord in High Five is the greatest fighting move in either PR/sentai.

Hey thats a good idea.

People are gonna love seeing Rita Repulsa riding around the skies on a tricycle terrorizing the children of Japan.
