Fighting Games Weekly | July 28 - Aug 3 | The thirst is UNiEL

I think it'll work better in the US, since you're not paying for every loss. People don't like taking Ls regardless, but at least it's not hitting their wallet. That and the US GG community isn't nearly as big as it was in Japan, so more of the playerbase is going to be learning the game new. That and I think online matchmaking can work better for keeping skilled players from rolling on noobs 24/7, but that requires enough players to begin with.

I noticed that GGXrd uses some kind of award system at the end of matches. I wonder if something like that could be used to help determine ranking for online matchmaking.

Like if you frequently get awards for performing high damage/advanced combos that newbies would never know then that could be used to match you up more with people who can do the same.

Like with UNIEL, day one there were some monsters going through online already. But I guess that's heavily affected by the player population. The people most likely to import UNIEL are going to be the enthusiasts who likely have experience with other fighting games that will give them an edge when it comes to fundamentals and learning combos.

Newbies to fighting games are not likely to import so it would be expected to see a bunch next year when it releases in NA. However since the hardcore crowd imported the game already months before they may all be high ranked enough to not get matched with newbies. So I guess the online situations are a little different due to when everyone's going to buy the game (UNIEL = some this year, some the next ||| GGXrd = same time).

I'll say that part of what kept me on Calamity Trigger when I first played was because I wasn't getting dumpstered every match. It was a new game in NA that did fairly well so there was a lot of people playing who had no idea what they were doing (me). It's fun to play against someone at a similar skill level.

Not so much when they are so skilled that you might as well watch them combo you to death because you have no recourse due to your lack of knowledge, familiarity and experience with fighting games.

I can only hope that Arcsys/Aksys have some improvements in store for the matchmaking so new players don't end up playing a one player game frequently.

I'm not sure how I feel about the matchmaking issue. Unless the game has a constant stream of new players every few months the skill gap gets bigger and bigger and harder to overcome with matchmaking. This problem is of course exacerbated when there is a small playerbase (I would define "small" as less than 1000 players across the world at a particular moment).

Star-Lord would make a pretty awesome fighting game character, been thinking about what kind of moveset he'd have, and considering the type of tools he uses.

I think Gamora/Drax would be a bit less interesting. Groot/RR would be pretty cool, perhaps even with an Ice Climbers or Ms. Fortune type style.

I would LOVE Star Lord and Groot in UMVC3, Groot would be a something like the Nemesis of Marvel, and Star Lord would be just be an badass character, but I don't know how they would make his character design like at all for UMVC3, so I wonder how they would do it

Xrd isn't picking up because it's ass maybe. Maybe people don't find it fun. Even if you lose and are getting steamrolled, a fighting game should still be fun and enjoyable and make you want to get better. If it's not fun while learning and getting bopped for you, why keep putting time/money into it?

Building from #R was a mistake.
YRC/slow down is a mistake.

The way I see it, Star Lord would have a few trap type moves similar to Rocket in UMvC3, maybe some short range projectiles, and good movement options with his rocket boots. I think Gamora/Drax would be a bit less interesting, but could still be doable. Both would be focused on up close fighting in a particular way: Gamora being a bit faster while still packing a punch, and Drax being a hard, multi-hitting brute. Definitely doable, especially if they can make Phoenix Wright!

And I was mostly thinking of Groot as something that would show up in Rocket's supers or something, as opposed to being there at all times. A level 3 of Rocket Jumping on Groot's shoulder and Groot beating the piss out of the enemy while Rocket fills them with lead would be great.

I really hope we don't start seein articles now about what an awesome female competative gamer Ricky is.

Why?

Because achievements from female gamers don't deserve to be stolen by a person with male muscle & skellatal development, & reactions. It'd be like if a 31 year old Male Sprinter got a sex change & enter the olympics as a female & got gold in every event & set unbreakable records. That's not fair. It's not fair to natural women who work their butts off to get results. When Ricky wins another major does he deserve to steal the title of "First Female to Win a Major" from someone like Kayane who's been working hard towards that goal forever?

Totally disagree. A fighting game's enjoyability can totally be contingent on the skill-level of the group of players.

I've always played GG, but never seriously. I tried getting into the game some months back for a while, playing guys like Flash Metroid, Ryan Hunter and others in S.FL. People that have been stalwarts of the series for a decade. You'd think the circumstances for learning couldn't be more ideal.

It was fun for a few weeks, until they started getting their execution back. They'd often grind out sessions when I wasn't around. Eventually, it got to the point where I'd have to get railed for 30 matches before I could even squeak out a win. Then, they'd just make the proper adjustments and rail me for another 30.

Typically, this would be freaking great. Most people would kill to have access to that kind of competition when learning a new fighting game. Problem was, it was a group of 3-4 people, and they were all veterans of a similar, high- level. No one else really plays the series anymore around here outside that little group, so it became very difficult to implement new strategies, tactics and tech while playing them - basically it became harder to progress my game. I couldn't focus on experimenting with anything because I was always busy blocking or getting mixed up. Totally became unfun.

Could I at least play the game online, I'd have been able to find someone around my skill level so I could enjoy the neutral at the very least. But the online is terrible.

Eventually we all just stopped playing, though, which I'm actually more disappointed with.

I just don't understand how you are getting so worked up over (imaginary) gender issues while being so stupid about gender issues

Im not getting worked up. Im just saying to me it would be really annoying if they start tossing achievement & praise on Ricky for being an amazing female gamer like s/he is breaking boundries when Ricky is just being Ricky the same person s/he's been for 17 years. That's a personal opinion.

This is a similar point of view to that thread about radical feminists the other day. I'm not sure what the PC thing is when transgender people make massive achievements, other than to just acknowledge the facts. Ricky spent the majority of her life as a man, so it does seem a bit strange to to say "she's the first female to accomplish ______." Its not really telling the full story. Its almost like you're meant to call people whatever they want to be called, until they accomplish something, then I'm not sure how it works.

Yeah, I pictured Star-Lord using more of the improvised/pillaged weaponry and stuff, like those rocket boosts and stuff, perhaps even on a cooldown. He could use the boots to escape quickly to the opposite side of the screen to make him safe, or far above, or forward.

And it would be cool to integrate (not really a spoiler since it's a detail that doesn't even matter really, but I'll spoiler it anyways)
his gun which has both a stun function and a kill function
into combos.

Guys am I a part of the problem if I find Gordeau and Waldstein both fun to use in UNIEL?

because too bad GRIMUREAPAH

Also yeah I'd think Star Lord in a hypothetical future Marvel fighter could work fine. I'd really like to see it.

The problem that many newcomers experience when trying to get into a new game.

The best way to get better is to play regularly against someone at your skill level or preferably someone slightly above your skill level who has the same motivation to get better. Otherwise you will just either be playing against someone much worse/better than you with both of you not improving your game all that match. This is something that many newcomers struggle with, finding that certain someone in their local. At least you have some people who are playing a game you like and are above your level (and are willing to play regularly with you)... others don't even have that much luxury.

If Xrd doesn't attract new players who are willing to stick around and take tons of losses, it's not going to do all that well.
I think this is a big reason P4A did well, the Persona tie-in brought in a lot of folks who didn't care all that much about Ws and Ls.

The greatest Guilty Gear tragedy has to be the lack of proper online treatment for AC+ and +R last gen. GG never really had a chance to take off online and for a lot of people that's the experience they're looking for.

Luckily for local stuff GG has got options depending on where you live.

I wish Colorado had more of a GG scene. It's mostly KoF and P4A, neither of which really clicked with me.

the reason why i got into mvc3 was because everybody was starting fresh like me. i leveled up along with everybody else. i can't imagine trying to get into marvel now.

so, this game will never be patched ever?

even for shit like that?
Pretty sure the breaking point for this issue was when TAC infinites were discovered. Since the game wasn't patched then it wouldn't be patched now either.

Most of these things really only impact online play though. Any thing super game breaking in the game would automatically be banned ... stuff like game freezes or characters being put into a state where they can't be hit leading into timer scam situations. At this point I would say the community should probably come up with a rule about timer scam infinites because they have been done in matches and it's only a matter of time before someone decides to cheese out a win in top 8.

Oh and according to some players... Capcom knew about TAC infinites before they were discovered by the general player base. They just weren't bothered to fix it at the time.

The greatest hurdle for me getting back into playing AC, was the aspect ratio.

I simply cannot go back to 4:3 on an HD screen.

Fuck is Deckard Cain saying?

He's saying he doesn't want people to highlight ricky being female now and act like his wins are something new for females everywhere and to just say it's ricky as it's always been.

That's about as basic as I can put it.
This is straight up offensive.
I can see his point though what truly makes it offensive? Personally as far as video games go I don't think there should be any difference in Male/Female achievements. *shrug*

If I did well in a tournament I sure as fuck wouldn't want them to highlight the fact I'm disabled, but that's my own view on things.

I am not touching this discussion about Ricky even with a 10 foot pole.

It's a quick way to getting banned on GAF. I am actually surprised this hasn't been made into a thread on GAF, normally something like this gets attention around here.

holy shit I missed this

the future of marvel fighting games, everyone

; _____________ ;

We've never let trivial things like this stop us before. Mobile Mahvel is still Mahvel, baby. Finally some actual new game hype for EVO 2015.

I think it would be hilarious if this even ends up as a side tournament.
