People are sanding down their glossy black consoles

Those look fantastic.

I need to see a PS4 brushed though, it suffers from why-is-there-gloss-here syndrome worse than pretty much any other console.

I think the Xbone looks pretty hideous. The others are just ok imo. Fantastic is not a word I would use personally.
I just prefer a more consistent aesthetic for the X1 and PS4. Having a chunk of it be glossy and the rest matte is just off-putting to me.

Did you see the close up shot of the Xbone? I mean maybe it'd be ok if it were more even but yuck!

I'd be down for a professionally made matte console for sure though.

After a couple of times putting it into my bag and going to a friends, it already had lots of hairlines on it. It then got some other scuffs and whatnot from having controllers sat on top of it. It's real easy to scratch them.
Don't put your controllers on top of it? Solved.
Why would you put them on top of it anyway?

Always wanted to do this to my DS but never found the time. It'd be nice if gloss was optional on consoles, that shit is nasty

DON'T DO THIS. You are intentionally scratching your unit and it looks ugly and horrible!
Nobody will want to buy it off you either if you one day sell it or upgrade, because it looks like you have mistreated it.

I'm not a fan of glossy electronics. Really wish the Wii U and Xbox One were glossy. At least most of the PS4 is, but still, that HDD cover is getting scratches getting dust off it with a micro fiber cloth. Ridiculous.

Somehow I read Crotch Brite which made me think what's up with that..

But this whole situation is just horrible. What were they thinking?!

Do people do things with their consoles that I am not aware of?

Personally I put my console in the tv stand and that is where it stays.

How is it "impossible" to not scratch glossy plastic?

Unless you leave a layer of dust on top of all your electronics it IS impossible to keep it pristine and scratch free.

I feel in the minority here but I love glossy things. They're harder to keep clean, but when they are clean they look so shiny and nice.
That Wii U does look cool though.

I have a nice black/dark glass TV stand with a floating shelf. My PS4 fits so perfectly in the floating shelf because of the glossy part. The PS3 and Wii U underneath look right at home as well. The gloss is perfect.

I don't get the issue people have with glossy electronics that sit in one place at all times. I use a duster to dust them off and they are shiny and sleek as hell. Matte would look like shit in comparison.

I once helped a friend sand down his PS3 so he could tint it silver and imprint a tribal Hello Kitty design he found.

Funny this topic comes up because yesterday I was cleaning my PS4, Wii U and 360 Slim from dust that had accumulated on it. I disconnected the consoles and had a good look at it and there were hairline micro scratches everywhere. And before people say 'what do you do to your consoles to get it that way'. I'd suggest they take a look at their own glossy consoles closely and you'll also see scratches everywhere. Even using a micro-fibre cloth delicately will leave scratches because you're brushing the dust away which becomes abrasive to the glossy material. There's nothing you can do about it.

So anyway, I did some googling and apparently some people have managed to lessen or get rid of altogether the scratches using car scratch removers or wax products of similar sort. I tried it on my Wii U and 360 Slim and yeah I think I can see less marks now. The PS4 on the other hand developed more scratches instead of lessening them. Damn.

Even though, you can't really notice the scuff marks unless you shine a torch on it, just the knowledge that there are marks on the glossy materials clashes with my OCDness.

Now, I'm not going to go over the top and sand down the consoles but I was looking at getting a decal/skin for my PS4. Brush Metal which looks pretty darn cool.

They should ban glossy materials, everything looks cooler when is matte, even cars:

Yeah, good look with that matte car when you forget to remove bird crap and it burns into your beautiful matte finish.

You see Nintendo, this is why the Wii U should have been matte, not gloss finish. Oh screw it go back to the Famicom colours of "well these were the cheapest coloured plastics"...

I use a cleaning thing EXACTLY like that and my XB1 is still covered in hairline scratches and marks. Same with the PS4 and the Wii U.

this thread reminds me of the days when people were painting their DS and we got this masterpiece. the whole scratch the shit out of your console is right on par imo.

I do believe it still works best instead of a microfiber cloth.

I guess the glossy look is great if you just do not touch it, but that is the case with those home cinema sets as well. The quality finish from the 80's/90's is nowhere to be seen anymore.

I don't even hate glossy plastic. I do prefer matte most of the time. Depends on how it fits with the design, both can look cheap.
That... scratched plastic look is awful. It looks decent in pictures with good lighting, but I can't imagine it looking good in real life. It just looks busted.

I hate glossy plastic. My phat PS3 has been looked after, but it looks like crap after all these years with those scratches that appear from just dusting it.

And my PS4 has scratches when you look at it with the right light already...only a matter of time before the glossy bit looks rubbish. And my Wii U doesn't look great up close.

I'm sure somebody will eventually make replacement shells for the gloss section on the PS4 though as it comes off so easily - give me my matte PS4! (It might look less premium but better than a half scratched up console...)
