if MS doesn't launch in japan they can say goodbye to any Japanese developer/publisher support. you might see the biggest games published but anything other than that wont be supported.
At this point even if they launch in Japan if they're getting their heads kicked in in NA and Europe, it won't matter, US is their last line of defense, if they can't hold the line on NPD, they might very well be fucked. Platinum might have bet on the wrong horse.

MS isn't even trying this time.

Xbox and especially Xbox 360 really put forth a respectable effort in Japan. I honestly thought they deserved to succeed. Xbox had some awesome Japanese exclusives like Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio, Otogi, DoA 3, etc. 360 had a ton of exclusives/times exclusives like Chromehounds, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, Full Auto, Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Beautiful Katamari, Star Ocean 4 etc.

Can't blame MS for not trying this time. Japanese gamers have proven that they don't give a shit about Xbox regardless how many quality Japanese exclusives it has.

The thing is, there's always going to be more Japanese games on the local platforms.

Funny thing this gen is a 360 style investment plan for One might have made a dent in Japan. Making the same moves as last gen would have at least given Japanese gamers a reason to look.

In the face of really weak Nintendo and Sony outings an Xbox with exclusive Idolmasters, VN, cheap and expensive RPG's could have made a show of it. Kind of shows just how unimportant the Japanese console market has become. No one is really even trying this time around.

Damn.
Xbone is already dead in Japan. In Europe its on life support.
The only market where they have a small chance now is USA.
Not looking good for MS, i think the war is already lost.
Hard to believe if you consider how popular the 360 was...
Hope its not the last MS console.
I loved the 360.

Success is never guaranteed when you transition to a new generation. Nintendo , Sony and now MS learned this the hard way. If you win a generation you gotta stay humble.

True.
SNES was the undisputed king, then Sony came out with the psx. Since then Nintendo was always on third place.
Maybe this time MS takes the third place.

They did invest with the 360. Two exclusives from Sakaguchi, a timed exclusive of the best Tales games, Idolmaster, shmups, visual novels, Earth Defense Force, several Capcom exclusives. And that didn't even get them a foothold.

Not to mention Team Ninja. They gave a pretty good effort and failed.

The delay was for localization, language, stores, currency, apps, kinect voice recognition of some, getting the ability to even sell in those countries the first place, and specific deals and promotions related to those countries.

Your anger for them delaying doesn't make much sense. technically, sonys delay was more nonsense in japan to be honest.

Not anger, just criticism. For comparison, Sony launched in dozens of countries within a month.

MS had the time to figure it all out. Their message wasn't clear, their dev tools weren't fully baked, they weren't in tune with their customers, had no killer apps for Kinect but banked on it anyway, had okay to unacceptable TV integration on release, and their launches were significantly staggered. They had years to sort all of that out and make better decisions. Look at the Japan launch...they show up late and don't have a JRPG or noteworthy exclusive from a Japanese developer. They should be criticized for it.

I say all of that as a fan of the Xbox. Fortunately Mattrick is out and Spencer seems tuned in enough to realize what it will take to make a difference. I realize Spencer is (mostly) just playing the cards he was dealt, so we won't see his larger affect on the brand for a while.

Yep. It really is a perception thing.

Brand loyalty is part of it but if a console has enough games you want to play and you have the money, you will buy it. Your nationality doesn't matter. The 360 had a few good exclusives but they weren't exactly system sellers unless you were already a fan of [series x]. The other stuff was niche or copies of existing series.

There's also the fact that PS3 played BD movies and many people rightly assumed it would beat HD-DVD if only because the PS3 could act as a trojan horse for the format. So you had a game console and movie player in one package instead of a 360 with add-on and power brick.

Not surprised at the lack of interest.
Western focused launch line up and not one compelling Japanese developed exclusive to tempt early adopters.

The japanese market isn't interested in the Ps4, a japanese console that has A LOT in common with the X1

Knowing this, I don't know why microsof even tries

The UK is still holding out for Xbox mind.

Not that I think this is to fault the dying console market place in Japan but getting exclusive JP games on the 360 certainly didn't help the other 2.

I went to my local Tsutaya today, and they had 1 Xbone game in stock, Dead Rising. That's it. They were selling the consoles too though.

Implying that Platinum doesn't only develop games that they are fully subsized during development on first.

Well, they might actually front their own money for MGS Revengeance 2.

Whatever Yahoo, the Japan launch was huge. Didn't you see the crowd?

That post + that avatar = Gold.

Add in the fact that you made that pic and it's even better.

I would have hired at least 50 people to stand in line and buy if the Press was going to show up at a launch

this is not good news from the press to outnumber your buyers

Jeez. Why aren't you in charge? I'd have gladly queued for hours wearing a halo tshirt and cheered my ass off for a free xbone. Hell I'd have posed for a tonne of pictures holding my Xbox.

Tokyo (AFP) - The Japanese launch of Microsoft's Xbox One fell flat on Thursday, with journalists covering the debut far outnumbering buyers

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

They might be losing money just by launching there lol

Got damn.

Story of the fucking forever. Microsoft is doing relatively not-bad, but since they aren't doing as well as their internal over-inflated estimates, they decide to pull out. Then, when they try again, they wonder why nobody would give them the time of day.

The story of Windows Mobile, and after that burning those of us who invested in Windows 7 Phones under the premise of an upgrade to 8 that never came and killed basically all development momentum. Even the high end models just got left in the dust despite being more than capable. The iOS and Android friends of mine just thought it was what I deserved for no listening to them. You will never meet a bigger Windows Phone hater than their former early adopter WP7 owners.

Doom and gloom! Lol... if Sony can't sell well in Japan, then why would micro be able to? In reality we should be cheering everyone of the big three for a while until momentum kicks in.

Consumers don't cheer for products they have no interest in. It's the corporation's responsibility to garner that kind of attention.

They'll only get cheered when they release games, and right now Sony should be getting some cheer based off pre-TGS announcements.

You bet it is, and that's why I want them all to do better than they are doing at creating and marketing. Of course you can take a flip perspective and boo so they realize the need.

Side note: Imo all three have done poor jobs so far.

Did it launch with any Japan-unique games? Can't think of much released here that would have a ton of appeal there.

Nope. Its launch games are the same super late Western-developed games that launched/bombed on PS4 in Japan months ago.

5pb's Chaos;Child - a visual novel exclusive to Xbox One - is due out late November. That's about it so far.
