Microsoft announces purchase of Minecraft creator Mojang

Yeah, this caught me off guard. that is a surprisingly kind move from Microsoft.

For now. They are not going to cloud over the announcement with System Wars stuff.

Minecraft 2 MMO aka "infinite power of the cloud " incoming. Classic Minecraft will stay on all platforms with dwindling support over the years.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
My little brother just said something that blew my mind.

"What if the next Windows had Minecraft pre-installed"

These potentially genius motherfuckers. That global reach, god damn.

The sequel to Minesweeper.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Minecraft seems like the perfect IP to help push MS's cloud strategies.

Kind? Idk, if I had to guess, they had no choice lol

There is no profit in cancelling ports to an already established game. The inevitable sequel, though...

On this note, as far as I'm aware MS didn't take down Max and the Magic Marker from PSN when they bought Press Play (was trying to check my PS3 needed an update >.<) so its not like they have a history of yanking games

True, they did not. The sequel, though...

That being said, Minecraft is not just a game to them. It is a massive platform.

Also I have to say, it's hilarious looking back at the initial thread and seeing people say that this wasn't Phil Spencer! This has nothing to do with him or Xbox! Come to find out it seems like he spearheaded the acquisition.

Yeah, but the question is whether its best years are behind it now. It's already on every platform imaginable, so MS don't get anything for vendor differentiation (although I guess they can now put in on winpho or the supposed all inclusive win9), so it boils down to how popular minecraft will remain. It's been hot for what, 2-3 years. How does MS keep it hot. More expansions? A "Sequel" - and if so do they make in exclusive to MS platforms?

Will be interesting to see where they go. My instinct is that they will never see their investment back.

Nope, still hasn't peaked.

Well PressPlay were already working with MS on The Curse of Brotherhood which is why they acquired them in the first place (existing relationship). I can't see why they'd have released it on PSN (there was also a WiiWare version too iirc)...

I don't understand how Microsoft wants to break-even till summer 2015? How are they going to make so much profit in less than a year?

Great move. Minecraft is in the best possible hands now. Dont really agree with them continuing to support the competing platforms, but theres zero chance that Minecraft 2 will continue to do so. MS should attempt to purchase some more developers maybe a bunch of Japanese ones as they are cheap and would likely catapult the xbone above the PS4 in both Japan and Europe where Japanese games are more appreciated than in the US.

Weird to buy a studio that long after a succesfull game.
With the creative mastermind gone i think we will only see Minecraft spinoffs/expansions

I'm actually quite surprised and happy that they are still going to make Minecraft for iOS, Android and Playstation.

Minecraft 2, there's no way.

They won't but they will mash the books to hide the losses for press releases, etc.

As others have posted that is in regards to the company as a wholes profit margins canceling out the cost. Not Minecraft itself.

Exactly. There's not much sense for a Microsoft owned studio to release the sequel to PSN/WiiWare when they own the damn company. Which is what most people think this is, I believe.

But it's not Max & The Curse of Brotherhood to them, it's Minecraft, AKA Office, AKA Windows, AKA platform agnostic, likely.

As far as I am aware, it's MS who has had their software on both of their console rivals' systems at some point or another even despite having a directly-competing platform now in the case of Xbox and Playstation, while neither of the other corporations can say the same. I'm sure they want that revenue stream and good PR first, not stuff to fuel the fanboy wars.

These 3 will make another game, that will sell a lot, then sell their new company for 2.5$ billion, rinse and repeat.
I am joking but they might create something very successful in the future.

Doubtful, Notch said he did not have an interest in that, has made plenty of stuff and the concept did a lot of work. I don't think they are amazing designers or anything.

Buying Minecraft makes so much sense for any games company. It's the most significant game to cross over into the mainstream since the Wii, and it's wildly popular, especially among kids.

If Nintendo had any idea what they were doing they would have bought this.

I am assuming Microsoft will eventually screw this up like they do everything. I wonder how.

I 100% agree. Personally I'll be shocked if Minecraft 2 isnt on iOS and Android and if it isn't then its seriously time to worry about the decision making at MS.

I don't see this as a deal to move Xbones much at all. Its to make a giant cashcow platform for them. Now I'm sure there will be timed exclusives / betas / quicker updates on MS platforms but to make it exclusive would be a huge mistake.

Is this why the PS3 Minecraft patch that enables transferring of worlds is mysteriously missing? /tinfoilhat

Ew. That's just sad.

Fight the power :D

Big move by MS, it might be quite profitable for them in the long (long) run.

I feel bad for Xbox fans that aren't fans of Minecraft. For them this is 2.5 billion that could have helped strengthen the platform and Xbox portfolio with a bunch of other games and new IP.

You act as 2.5B is all MS has to its name or something. This doesn't preclude them from spending even more than that on more acquisitions or new IPs.

Why do you even think that money would've been used for that in the first place? They're already dumping billions into Xbox development now. MC represents something that goes beyond console platforms and will surely outlast all of the current ones on the market.

Force their dated corporate mindset on the company. Drive out all the old, experienced, talent who don't want to and don't need to work in such a bureaucracy. Slowly phase out user customization like skins and texture packs in favor of paid, probably sometimes sponsored (buy Mt Dew, get a texture pack), DLC, limit developers ability to communicate with their customers, limit users ability to create dedicated servers with their own game modes. Move profiles to the cloud, limiting mods and offline play. Add paid expansions.

They can screw this up. And they obviously will. It's just a matter of waiting for it to happen.

Yup. There's no chance 2.5B spent on new IPs would have brought anywhere near the revenue or new users the Minecraft IP will bring in. 2.5B used on new IPs would have likely just resulted in a bunch of failures and maybe a few small hits that sell 1 million copies. Basically 2.5b wasted with no results seen until at least three years from now. Mojang was literally the best possible use of 2.5B possible.

So that will be F2P Minecraft in which you pay per blocktype or pay 20 bucks for all.

After all MS has to recoup 2.5 billion. Even with 50 million players that is 50 bucks a player!

My toddler bought a $21.14 "Crate of Gems" on my phone this weekend in a "My Little Pony" game.

lol wow.

Someone needs to make a thread and make a list of things that this is not about Xbox console only. Looks like majority of people are still clueless about how big this IP is and how fast its growing among kids.

WhatsApp was bought for 19B or something. Is it worth it? For now no. But what Facebook saw was how quickly it was growing everywhere.
