No, because the PS4 version is just an uprezzed PS3 game.
When was this annouced ?

You're never going to get an even distance though. Persona 5's European release could easily be summer '16, if you then leave it a year, I think we're too far removed from the main pack of games and we're still substantially closer to P5 than any other candidate. If we break it into genres I think it's reasonable to wait a bit for one of the higher profile ones to hit. Nevermind Persona 4 wasn't even announced until late 2007 at best, possibly 2008 given what I found in Sept 2007 stated there was a Persona game in development... for PS3. And I doubt they had that lined up before P4.
It may help to let this generation sit for a bit anyway. Fortunately I think most Japanese support may be jumping to PS4 sooner than later unlike PS2 to PS3. Stuff from these smaller developers hitting there and P5 being cross gen says everything I think.
360 came out in 2004, same as WOW
No, it didn't. The Xbox 360 came out in 2005.360 came out in 2004, same as WOW

It's never going to be a perfect set of entry criteria, although I think we could iron them out to be pretty comprehensive. But realistically, in GAF, what is going to be the PS3/4 split on P5 players? I imagine it will be colossally in PS4's favor.

It'd be easy enough to make a Dark Souls crack as a reply, but honestly I can see it boiling down to one of those two in the end depending on personal inclination for narrative versus gameplay. Especially as in that regard neither let up fully on the "opposite" (TLoU may not be what I want out of a video game but it's as great as a more linear, narrative driven action game can be for me, while Dark Souls has some fascinating lore lurking under the surface and it's interesting following the character arcs of the NPCs you encounter.)
I can see why a lot of you are cynical about the winner being something like Dark Souls or The Last of Us, but I honestly think the winner would be Portal.
Of course. It didn't win the year it came out because it had little hype, the first game was PS3 exclusive, and a fairly bad selling one. The PC version didn't ship until the following summer. It's a fifty hour game, and it hit in a packed holiday season.Against the likes of MGS4, TLoU, and Mario Galaxy?

and that is not a good reason to deny the people who would play it on ps3 and experience it that way a vote.
this was actually the main reason i held off on the ps2 generation one for quite a while. because it was 2010 and sakura wars and mana khemia 2 were still coming out for the machine, as were other multiplatform games.
i mean someone out there might have really liked guitar hero '08 for the ps2, and have fond memories for just that version. instead of doing it in 2009 like i had wanted, i just held off. when i stopped doing them, i stopped caring.
if we do a game of the generation vote, i would actually like to do that generation from 1998-2010. the one that had the ps2, gba, dreamcast, xbox, and gamecube. the only issue here would be the pc, but i think as long as people aren't being unreasonable, it should be fine. my personal way to do it would be to include pc from 1998-2004, but including both half-life *and* half-life 2 as part of the same generation feels really silly.
for this generation that's just ending, i think it would be good to do it in 2015, when really all the remaining titles are finishing up. and then you can count 2004-2015 as the timing for it, from the ds's launch all through the ps3's last biggest games (persona 5, mgs5, etc)
You're presuming that if there's a next-gen GotG vote, that they will disqualify it for being cross-gen. I don't know that's true.and that is not a good reason to deny the people who would play it on ps3 and experience it that way a vote.
I think that being forced to look at the entire 8-year history of the last generation, and having to justify their choices, would make people think a lot harder about which games they choose, rather than just spouting whatever the (relatively) new hotness is. Portal was a game with much more cultural purchase than most other games. (Even though it was sometimes expressed in annoying ways, like the never-ending "cake is a lie" meme.)Where did you get that idea?
360 came out in 2004, same as WOW
Yeah, I don't think you'll need to worry about that.
I don't think the winner itself will be that exciting, it's either Mario Galaxy or Dark Souls most likely, but I'd really love to read the thread, all the lists, because the stuff that's top three isn't going to be surprising, but what's someone's seventh or eighth favorite? What's the winning indie game? It's the personal lists, and that awesome data breakdown we get that'd be really interesting I think.
It's cross gen. It doesn't count as last gen.
What about PS2-PS3 cross gen games? Are we disqualifying those too? Would every single cross gen games be forever barred from any GotG polling, then?
What would the result of this vote even mean?
It's cross gen. It doesn't count as last gen.
Ehh, if you wait too long for these kinds of votes, participation rate plummets, I think you had some experience with that with your other voting threads. Now is a good compromise time between when people are interested in being reflective and all the major games being released. P5 and MGS5 are on PS4 so it's fine to leave them out.
Because I was curious, I made a list of the remaining PS3/360 only games that Wikipedia says have yet to release. There's also the possibility that Japan will announce some Musou or Gundam game or something, but at this point even the niche holdouts like Atlus and NIS have moved on. I think in the interest of having a vote with good participation, I'm willing to risk foregoing the possibility that these will be future top ten classics:
F1 2014
MX v ATV Motocross
WWE 2K15
Assassin's Creed Rogue
Digimon All Star Rumble
Escape Dead Island
Cross of the Dutchman
Tales of Zestiria
The Awakened Fate Ultimatum
Under Night In Birth:EXE
i think p5 should count for every generation it exists in as long as it's how the game was experienced. You're presuming that if there's a next-gen GotG vote, that they will disqualify it for being cross-gen. I don't know that's true.
If someone wanted to vote for King Kong in this conceptual thread, I certainly wouldn't be against it.

I'd say that if we needed to pick one, we should choose the up-crossgen rather than the down-crossgen, as obviously crossgen games are mostly held back by the spec of the lower-gen.
yes it does. if you're counting last gen as games that games that came out on a certain generation of hardware, then it belongs there. you can count twilight princess as part of the generation that started with the dreamcast, or you can count it as part of the generation that started with the ds. there's no wrong answer. both experiences are valid.
Nope.
Xbox 360 launched on November 22 (US)/December 2 (EU/UK) and December 10 (JP), 2005.
Experiences are valid? That's a little broad and besides the point. The point is to establish technical rules for the voting. I don't think Hitman Blood Money or Gun should be counted as two gens old. I think they are last gen because they were developed for last gen in addition to the gen before. Alien Isolation and Destiny should not count as last gen.
And I do not if that means needing to wait for it to release.i think p5 should count for every generation it exists in as long as it's how the game was experienced.
What? That Sonic game? It was bad man... real bad.My game of the generation literally has the word generation in the title. Close contenders are Contra 4, Ni No Kuni, Mario Galaxy, and Uncharted series.
GAF Top 10 would be something like this:
Top 1-3:
Dark Souls
The Last of Us
Super Mario Galaxy
Top 4-8:
Uncharted 2
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
GTA V
Portal 2
Top 9-10:
Metal Gear Solid 4? BioShock? Journey? Xenoblade Chronicles? Bayonetta? Fallout 3 / New Vegas? Skyrim?
that is exceptionally arbitrary decision-making and really has no place when you're establishing technical rules.
And I do not if that means needing to wait for it to release.
It's no surprise people are specifically highlight Persona 5, not Metal Gear, or however many cross-gen games that they know are coming, because people still think of Persona 5 as being a PS3 game that's coming to PS4, not a cross-gen release like MGS5.
The generation isn't really about technology, or the Wii would be included with the previous generation. It's about the time frame. Persona 5 is releasing way into the current generation, and on a current generation platform, and it's going to sell far far better there, at least in the West.
I don't fundamentally have an issue with including it in the previous generation, I just have an issue with waiting three years for a GotG thread. Far less people would take part, they'd have less fresh memories of the games, their choices would be less interesting to others looking for games to currently play, etc.
I don't like this idea, because the lists would be super boring, and people might not get to actually vote for their favorite game, as it probably didn't win its year.
I still wouldn't personally want it. Even if it was the top ten. I don't think the data in the results thread would be very interesting, or reading the lists. Everyone would be forced to heavily compromise their lists. I also don't really see any advantage to doing it.True. I'm not sure of the whole list, but I doubt any of my personal GOTYs of last gen won. I wouldn't really expect something that wasn't popular in the year it came out to leapfrog a game that was popular in its year (unless a better game in its series came out after).
Perhaps top 3 of each year?
Would this mean Virtual Console & PS1/PS2 Classics could be voted for? What about ports like Sonic 3 & Knuckles o.o?yes it does. if you're counting last gen as games that games that came out on a certain generation of hardware, then it belongs there. you can count twilight princess as part of the generation that started with the dreamcast, or you can count it as part of the generation that started with the ds. there's no wrong answer. both experiences are valid.
1. Game would have to be from between 2005-2013.
2. Game can be either multiplatform or exclusive, however the game can not have been cross-gen eg. PS2-PS3 or PS3-PS4.
3. Top 10 list just like in GotY threads with explanations why.
I think it could work. It would be a highly debated thread come results time.
Mm, could you give some examples of such effects? I'd say that if somebody could make the same game for the older-gen, any effect they add to the newer gen is not that important to begin with. How so? I don't get why you are thinking cross-gen games should count on the older and newer gen. Who the heck thinks of Titanfall as last gen? Or Shadow of Mordor?
I really don't think it should work that way. That seems contrary to the scope of the games' developments to count them on the older gen or the newer one, when clearly the definite tech ended up on the newer gen thanks to various effects and such they make use of on the newer gen versions.
Why not? I shall admit that I don't really understand what role exactly does different hardware play into crafting a game. But I often see people lamenting crossgen games. In Dragon Age: Inquisition threads people point out how it obviously is held back by it also releasing on PS3/360. In The Witcher 3 threads people are cheering for a game finally free of the shackles of last-gen.Seriously, Destiny is last gen now? Titanfall last gen? Alien Isolation weren't always developing for current gen, so do their last gen versions make it a last gen candidate too? Cross gen should count on the newer gen. It is the only clean, sensible way for cross gen games to count.
What does technical competency matter anyway? Mario Galaxy would look better on PS3, but it wasn't. People experience what the game is, not what the potential was.Mm, could you give some examples of such effects? I'd say that if somebody could make the same game for the older-gen, any effect they add to the newer gen is not that important to begin with.

If the fact that it's a crossgen title makes the current-gen version lesser that what it could have been, wouldn't said game be more a last-gen than a current-gen?

Me too. That game pretty much made my ps3 purchase worth it. And I bought it at launch for 599 American Dollars.I'm actually throwing a vote to Uncharted 2. Shit is amazing.
GOTG was Demons Souls for me. Nothing really grabbed me the way that game did last gen. 2nd place would be TLOU. 3rd place probably Red Dead Redemption.
We could do categories!
Most Influential GOTG - Modern Warfare
Best Graphics of the Generation - Crysis ( we including PC? Nah prob not ). So Beyond Two Souls
Most Overlooked GOTG - Folklore
Most Disappointing GOTG - Final Fantasy 13
Shit like that.
What? That Sonic game? It was bad man... real bad.
