I don't know if this is really necessary. When something dumb like MGS4 wins, everyone will look back and think, "What was the point of this?"

Making it a top 15 list in chronological order would be great - and even then there would be unhappy people - there are too many amazing games imo... good problem to have, of course! :p

I have sat on the sidelines of this discussion long enough to see that you are getting far too involved and making this discussion more heated than it more than it should be (your prose seems to indicate it and you seem to be focusing more on Persona 5 than AniHawk is, from an outside view). I think we should probably take it down a notch and see the perspective that the other standpoint is taking here. AniHawk is suggesting that while the generation is over for some players such as yourself, it is not over for some players who play more niche game or even some higher-profile games like Assassin's Creed: Rogue. Waiting an extra year for a game of the generation vote doesn't seem like it's a bad idea in that case because a lot of these games are coming out in 2015 itself. But I can see your point as well: you've moved on from the older platforms and don't see a need to keep at playing the older generation consoles because they've maxed out their limits for you and that's a fine assertion too. A lot of people felt the way you did last year, just from a simple search from this time (+6months) last year:

People were suggesting that the end of the generation was last year, and as we can see from the console output in 2014, that was not necessarily the case. I have not been reading or posting much on GAF this year, so I can't say how people here felt about games, but I can say that a lot of people I know personally and on other boards have not moved on to the next generation because it isn't meaningful enough for them to move on from the console they have. The last generation for these people has not ended yet and it more than likely will not end for them next year.

From a personal standpoint, I do think it's far too early to even bother starting a vote now. I think most people are feeling like they need to make up their minds for the Game of the Year season and thus are feeling like they need to vote for the Game of the Generation. However, I seem to recall that people were feeling this way last year as well. We didn't bother to have a Game of the Generation vote that year because it was too early to call. TGS/E3 had a lot of PS3-only games (not specifically cross-gen) that are going to be out in 2015 or even later. As a general importer, I would love to have an option to vote for their games or even just consider them if I like them a lot (ex: Tales of Zestiria, Guilty Gear Xrd, UNIEL, etc.). I don't want to feel like I have to wait a few years for a Game of the Generation revote just to fit some honourable mentions suggestions for them. A lot of the games I liked from last gen seemed to have come out at the tail end of the platform's lifecycle, for example. I think limiting some people's votes to an arbitrary timeline decided based on a next generation console launch and not the slowing production of games from a previous generation would be limiting to some users (such as myself).

AniHawk is just trying to say that while it's reasonable for you, yourself, to move on, a lot of people clearly haven't based on their tastes or even their massive backlogs (which a casual glance at some threads on this site today would lead me to consider that people have not played a lot of games this generation that they'd like to make a considerably well-rounded vote -- this would lead to a lot of rushing around on their part). To lead a Game of the Generation/Year vote thread would mean having to consider what a lot of people's options are, so you can't just be unreasonable and dictate a thread's flow and creation based on how you feel.

If we did a game of the handheld generation vote, I would happily post a list on this forum because that is the vote I have been most looking forward to. That particular generation is finished, and I've been ready to vote for that for a while now. I think console games can wait at least until next year when most is said and done.

However. I do not agree VC/PS1 classics are valid votes since it would probably miss the point of the PS3/360/Wii generational idea of the vote. For cases like that, I'd go for a game of the year ______ or a game of the decade vote instead. I think it would be a bit of a disservice to the games developed within the generation for which we are voting.

I apologize if this is basically me stepping over my bounds since I haven't posted here in months, but I just couldn't sit on the sidelines anymore because the discussion was getting more heated than it should have been.

Pretty much. There's a tiny bit of wiggle room with your 9-10 slots, but whatever list we'd make is pretty much going to have these titles. Mostly a collection of safe titles that relied on presentation and whose core mechanics were lifted straight out of other games.

If I have to vote, I would definitely go with Dark Souls as well.
The level designs were so good that I still have a mental imagery of each level layout.

For me the GotG needs to really only answer one question:

What does this game do that other games will attempt to emulate for years to come?

Like my personal GotG of the 6th gen would be MGS3, but my honest answer would be GTA3. MGS3 is great but all it did was show all of Kojima's usual toolsets honed to perfection, but nothing new.

Many games exist because of GTA3.

Front runner for me this generation is CoD4 with that in mind.

It's your pick so you can say what you want, but I've always found this logic silly. GTA3 sounds more like it's your pick for the most influential game of the generation, not the actual "Game of the Generation". I've always interpreted "best," to sort of be implied. It's your pick though so w/e.

What else could game of the generation mean? If it's just a popularity contest, the front runners are Minecraft(actual nominee), CoD games, Gta5(no), and Wii sports.

It's a popularity contest but within the GAF community. To see what GAF's favorite games of the generation are, much like our GotY contests that are run yearly.

MGS4 is easily the game of the generation. People who loved it? Well that is easy. People who hated it? They still hate it enough to cause a strong reaction around 5 years later.

What other game does that? Short of super Mario 3d world winning, I think it is the only interesting choice.

If we're going to do this then I nominate Rock Band 3. That game was perfectly refined digital crack. People who didn't play any other games were asking, nay begging, to play it for years.
It got me laid, too. It's crazy to even type that. It's a video game, FFS.

There's a lot of other arguments beyond personal preference or most influential, like which game was the best designed, which epitomized the course of the generation, etc. Really depends on what you want to go with for GotG, though in this case it'd probably be a "what game you liked best" and seeing which one was most liked among everyone.

I say we do it just so Mario Galaxy can beat out The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, and Dark Souls. MGS4 would also be good.

honestly, either this or Game of the Decade is probably a better choice just to avoid any recency bias

(also Super Mario Galaxy has no chance of winning a GOTG vote with Super Mario Galaxy 2 leeching from it, ironically in GOTD though Super Mario Galaxy 2 gets cut off)

If a game were to win by a large majority then one could make the generalization that it is 'GAF's opinion'. Of course it isn't meant to be taken as 'literally every person here thinks this game is the best'

Yeah ToZ won't be GoTG but Persona 5 has a really big chance of being game of the generation for many people.

We should wait till its out.

It baffles me to see debate over what is included in the last console generation. If a game is released on a console that is part of that generation, it counts. Including HD remasters and cross-gen games. The only point of potential confusion is portables, but none of them will win so it doesn't matter. They can have their own category.

Games are still coming out, so this is premature. Do it after the dust has settled from the last big release we're likely to see on PSWii60.
