Man's PSN account banned for life after being hacked - Sony can't unban

Well, with regard to Steam:

I'm sure it helps that there is no shortage of third-party content servers.

How does correspond to Steam TOS? It says:
F. Ownership of Software
All title, ownership rights and intellectual property rights in and to the Software and any and all copies thereof, are owned by Valve US and/or its or its affiliates’ licensors. All rights are reserved, except as expressly stated herein. The Software is protected by copyright laws, international copyright treaties and conventions and other laws. The Software contains certain licensed materials and Valve’s and its affiliates’ licensors may protect their rights in the event of any violation of this Agreement.
Which, as I understand, means nothing I paid for on Steam is mine. It's also not legally binding for me due to being written in a foreign language but that's another thing. I'm also fully aware what I agreed to, just curious.

Again, something stinks about this whole thing. Either this was a problem he knows he created for himself (abusing game sharing) and is trying to 'save face' by claiming he was hacked... Or he is actually guilty of hacking and is now just trying to play it off.

I don't buy his story at face value, there is more to it then this and the fact that people are jumping on Sony before knowing the whole story is incredibly silly to me, especially with how often we've seen this story played out on Neogaf in the past.

"Either he must have done something wrong, or he must have done something wrong! But jumping to conclusions is silly!"

Is this even possible in the EU? At least in Sweden I could raise a consumer complaint which would probably grant me the games/credits back. The account is probably lost but if you can prove with receipts or similar then you would probably get the games back.

You can buy a new console. You can't buy servers in which games are stored.
thought his post was implying to the system as in PSN or XBL as a whole. If thats what he was implying and if those services ever crapped out owning the disc wouldn't make a difference. Maybe you could get some single player fun out of the games for a bit. A full digital future is headed our way regardless so we soon won't have a choice.

The SSA hasn't been updated since mid-2012. Similarly, account deactivations/terminations are no longer policy -- e.g. here's what a chargeback used to result in and here's what one results in these days.

That's what I was thinking - at least they could (and should) gift him the games he lost on his new account. But hopefully someone just unlocks his account, I don't see why that would be "impossible."

Oh you know, 8 years later we can't change our PSN name.

This is literally my worst nightmare. Got cold sweats as I realized that I gave my old PS3 to my half-brother ( who is 13 ), and it still has my account details inside... I trust him, he's a cool kid, but his friends? I don't know them, and who knows what they might be up to. I need to visit him and delete my account.

We need to establish the concept of ownership of digital content. Digital purchases should behave just like physical purchases. A company shouldn't be able to "punish" a customer by removing access to all of their digital content. As the use of digital content becomes more widespread, more stories like this will get out, and unless guarantees are given about the permanence of digital purchases those purchases will suffer from a reduced adoption rate.

There is no way in the world this isn't fixable if he can prove his plight.

These are digital licenses and can be changed as records can be changed in a database. Its exactly the fact that this is digital that makes it something so easy to fix.

you can do that online, you know?

Sony's online issues with accounts/bannings/hackings/licenses seems to be a complete clusterfuck any time they are tested outside the usual circumstances. Unfortunately when those situations arise, the consequences can be pretty serious for anyone who falls foul of a Fifa hack or similar. Their customer service is also notoriously inept when it comes to account issues.

His best bet might be to fight fire with fire and fight for his account. If people can hack it from him, there might be people who can obtain access back for him (presumably for a price).

Either way it's bullshit, Sony should do more to protect against it or help when it happens.

UPDATE users
SET banned = false
WHERE user_name = 'J-tight'

You're welcome Sony.

That only works in case a sane developer designed the PSN database.

And we already know that it wasn't a sane developer, because there is still no way to change the PSN-ID.

Maybe they are doing:
DELETE users WHERE user_name = 'J-tight'
DELETE psngames WHERE user_name = 'J-tight'
INSERT INTO banned_users VALUES user = 'J-tight'
(lol)

Woah. That just seems like some spy movie level type infiltration.

He doesn't really go into the specifics but says that his account was hacked and he thanks Sony's community manager and Sony for helping him figure out what happened but for some reason they can't unlock his account.

I'm hoping that as time goes on someone at the PSN can figure it out and help him because I really can't see how it would be impossible to get his stuff back to him. Either that or there's more to this story, who knows?

So they just should give hime credit and restore his purchases on a fresh one.

That simple

I've heard about compromised accounts leading to bans, but it has ONLY been when people go behind Sony's back and do stuff like have their bank take the money back.

Dang, hopefully J-tight can get it back, I've heard of reversals to the permabans for other people.

I sucked six dicks to get this tag.
Probably already said but another reason to keep me from ever going all digital on consoles. That and the high ass console digital game prices(except some good psn flash/ps+ sales once in a while).

Sony makes me nervous with buying dd's. I still do from time to time for the Vita, but I wouldn't go crazy with it.

Nintendo of course is out of the question. I'm not sure how people justify buying software that disappears if something happens to that particular hardware.

Microsoft is the only one that I'm confident in with this stuff.

I found out some assholes were trading my account around gamesharing games. I had no idea until Sony switched the amount of consoles you can have active from 5 to 2. I couldn't activate my other console because they were all used. So I cleared them all out, changed my password, and activated them both. I got a message right after i activated my console some random dude wanted to know whats was up and if I could free up a console. I was like "who the fuck are you man? I don't gameshare!" He was actually shocked because he thought I (the psn id owner) was the one sharing. But it was some dude pretending to be me, and trading accounts. I'm lucky I caught it in time because I have at least over $1000 in digital games + my plus games.

Sony really needs to make two-step authentication happen. I keep hearing about all those FIFA hacks and it makes me fear for my account(s) a little.

Sony needs to support a system to reverse bans on people. There is an absurd number of reasons that someone may be banned accidentally, reversing the process should have been a high priority requirement for them.

Microsoft has a similar policy where if you get perma banned, you lose access to all your downloaded stuff. No one is safe.

lol I bet it's like that actually. The reason why they "can't" unban is it will take many man hours to recreate his account.

If they don't fix this guy's account I really will reconsider any digital purchase on PS4 going forward.

If there's something that sucks with Sony, it's their costumer service.

I had my account hacked and money withdrawn from my bank account. Fortunately, I discovered it quickly and changed the password, but I was unable to return the amount back thanks to Sony's incompetence.

Between pre-order refunds resulting in licensing/runtime issues and pre-order cancellations not actually resulting in cancellations, I wouldn't be shocked to learn that Sony CSRs are incapable of reversing permanent account bans due to an oversight in software/database design.

I've had several account issues resolved without problems (mainly around trying to buy the digital deluxe version of Assassins Creed 2 and having it expire less than a year later, which happened both times) resulting in refunds.

And he is also PlayStation MVP. I mean do you treat your MVPs like that?

I'm a Playstation MVP, I've never received any special treatment during my support claims.

Here is some tips to avoid account issues (getting charged, "hacked" or banned)

  • ALWAYS make sure a system has Deactivated from any PSN accounts tied to the system and completely reset (Not the same as formatting system) before selling/trading/gifting it;
  • Do not Gameshare
  • Use PSN gift cards to buy things from store (the cards do not have any tax on the cards)
  • Do not use the same passwords -- the rate in which large sites/companies are getting compromised over the past few years has increased at an alarming rate.... When you use the same password in multiple locations it makes it more damaging when one of those sites is breached and compromised)
  • *NEVER* initiate charge backs... If you do your account WILL be banned -- unless the amount of money charged is tremendously greater than than value of all the content bought on the account it should be used as a last resort.

You rarely will hear about cases turning out positively for the consumer. I mean it makes sense, there's no reason to complain.

For instance, I had my Vita stolen when I moved. Once I realized it was stolen, I changed my account password, saw that someone had bought a game on my account using funds already in my wallet, I called up Sony, they refunded the money and told me to deactivate that Vita, which I did.

Since he warned not to game share, I wonder if that's what he was doing? I think sony become more vigilant about game sharing compared to the ps3 days.
