September 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes October 14th

Oh wow, I did not expect those PS4 numbers at all.

Just to put things in to perspective. Assuming in September the PS4 sold exactly triple more than August then take a look at the number of consoles sold per week:

September: 570/5 weeks = 114k/week
August: 190/4 weeks = 47.5k/week

It's really a huge jump. Hopefully, this means that the Console Market is not dead as some people say it is, and people were just waiting for the right time to buy a console.

Thats what everyone thought about Titanfall month.

In all honestly. Halo fan is really feeling good about their remaster. It should do well for Microsoft and it's a known quantity, easily marketable due to familiarity. I don't think Sony in all their infinite wisdom won't offer some deal or promotion with any game in the current library or GTAV or something in November to counteract this. WOM and positive feelings will still carry the PS4 in its second holiday. Any store deal, gift card trickeration, etc. will help to counter whatever Halo can bring to the table.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched on Oct. 3 in the U.S., and even with only two days of data included in NPD's September report, the game still managed to finish as the No. 4 best-selling software SKU for the month with more than 705,000 total units sold. Of that total, more than 135,000 units were sold digitally through the Nintendo eShop. The game's biggest impact however may be on hardware sales. More than 140,000 units of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems were sold in September, an increase of 55 percent over sales in August.

Sales of Wii U hardware also saw double-digit increases in September, increasing by nearly 50 percent over sales in August. These gains were driven in particular by two software titles: Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8. Hyrule Warriors launched on Sept. 26 and has already sold more than 190,000 combined units in the U.S. alone. Mario Kart 8 sold nearly 60,000 combined units in its fifth month on the market, bringing its lifetime total in the U.S. to nearly 1.2 million total units.

A great lineup of games for Wii U begins on Oct. 26 with Bayonetta 2, the Wii U exclusive that currently holds a 91 score on Metacritic. That continues with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on Nov. 21 and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Dec. 5. Also launching on Nov. 21 is amiibo, Nintendo's foray into the toys-to-life category. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first game to launch with amiibo integration. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi's Woolly World, with more to come. More details about compatibility and functionality of amiibo may be found at http://amiibo.com.

The Nintendo 3DS library will soon be bolstered by two of the most anticipated games of 2014: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (Nov. 21).

*Data regarding physical sales of games in September are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo's internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

PS4 doing over 500K is amazing. Never would have guessed it that's pretty much Wii territory for the month of September.

Wii U close to 100K is also amazing to me. Man -- I think many people really messed up this month (haha). Wonder if my Xbox One prediction was spot on though.

Fantastic digital sales for Smash Bros. (135,000 out of 705,000), big surprise since it probably didn't suffer retail shortages.

Hyrule Warriors did well, didn't it?

Microsoft coming in last with PR? Hmmm ....

Good job by Nintendo. We may actually get a Wii U soon also. Get it for my wife with Mario and Mario kart which she loves.

Was gonna wait till next year but we will See

Makes me wonder if Oct PS4 sales may actually be lower than Sept sales. There have been some releases, yeah, but at the same time nothing with the impact of Destiny.

190k for HW is pretty impressive all things considered. I don't think people expected a near 200k opening for that game considering its genre and whatnot.
