Phantasy Star Online and Monster Hunter style games Thread: Star Hunter Society

I'm one of those people who fails to see the connection between PSO and Monster Hunter. Might as well throw in Dark Souls if you're gonna get that broad.

As much as I love PSO... I still hold the belief that it's HARDLY the first hunting game. It's ties to Monster Hunter (which really is the original), are so small that the only similiarity they hold is that they have a hub town and real time combat. Even then the feel of combat from PSO and MH is drastically different.

I mean, it's pretty obvious to me that the framework set up in PSO was modified and expanded to become Monster Hunter. Just like Monster Hunter inspired Soul Sacrifice and Ragnarok Odyssey and Toukiden. But in any case:

The current scope of Hunting Action game being used for this thread is any action games or action RPG's with a mission based structure, party based co-op limited in scope, and character customization of some sort.

But that's just.. ugh... That's way to broad of a scope.

PSO - Go through a "dungeon" either 2 levels or 3 levels and fight a boss in an arena at the end- fight many enemies on the way.

MH - Go a zone and track down and kill the boss enemy, you can either kill or trap the monsters. They can also run away and hide in the zone.

How are these similiar!?

PSO is a loot game, like diablo, thats pretty much all you had left to do once quests were done and you completed the game on normal. Everything from that point on was about getting better loot, mag rasing, and grinding until you could access the next difficulty level up so you could repeat the process to get access to even better and rarer loot. MH came along later and went in a slightly different direction and made it specifically about preparing to fight a single monster.

I mean, what other discussion can you really have besides parallel discussions about two completely different games?

You can talk about even stuff like Mercenary Kings and MH together, no problem. Soul Sacrifice. Etc. PSO has more in common with Destiny, Diablo, and Borderlands than MH.

Besides being Japanese. Which is where I think this confusion all stems from.

Oh I'm not against discussing what makes a Hunting action game that.

Okay.

Unless you really, really love the slow paced combat in PSP, way better. Fucked weapon balancing, but in a good way. The amount of content is absurd.
PSP was basically PSU. PSP2 & Infinity add an change so much they almost feel like different games. For one the difficulties much higher! But now ya got charge attacks for ranged weapons, roll dodging, gaurding, a new race (Infinity-only), an lots lots more.
Immeasurably better. Think Assassin's Creed to Assassin's Creed 2 or Uncharted to Uncharted 2 or Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2.

Seems like I found my next hunting game. That's a lot of improvements. Is it as easy as a MH game to play in Japanese or are there any decent fan translations?

Thank you. Throw in every other Japanese RPG with a vaguely mission based system and this is one confusing list of games.

I guess in the same way that Call of Duty is similar to Quake or Team Fortess is similar to Counter-Strike, or Bioshock is similar to Blood Dragon. They're all considered FPS games.

I see no reason that a genre description should have no room for variation.

What are you asking? If it exists? Yes it does. Is it good? Yes it is. Can you download it? Sorta…

Also:

damn, I missed mad words in that sentence.
well what I meant is did sega release the official english version..........but what you mean by........sorta, you got me curious now.

Ive tried the japanese version with the english patch but that doesnt turn the entire game into english though.

There is an official English release, but it's only in SouthEast Asia.

This is such a great idea for a community thread. Loved Monster Hunter 3rd and 3U, and I'm insanely excited for 4U. That insect glaive has both the mobility and speed I've been missing.

I hope God Eater 2B will be localized, because I sort of want some monster hunting for my PS4, and that looks like a great contender. Sadly I'm not sure if a localization is even on the table. :(

Also, is Crystal Chronicles for DS really a hunting game? I never played them, but I just thought it was a more action-y FF spinoff.

But with the definition being used for the thread, any Action-RPG (hell even Borderlands is getting an honorable mention) is an hunting game. By this logic, Diablo 3 is in the same genre as Monster Hunter. :/

If anything, Action-RPG should be used as an umbrella. Whereas Hunting games should be a subgenre of it, similar to how you can consider a loot-based RPG (Diablo, Borderlands, PSO) a subgenre.

Heh, lot of deniers for type-0. It is what it is, why did you back away from it OP? Might as well take out SAO also.

Too much fuss and Agito is more accurate. I was really referring to Agito in any case. I'm not fully cutting anything from the OP, regardless of the squabbles. I don't think that it's really that unclear what my intent is here, so I'm just going to wait it out until we're ready to talk about games.

truthfully if you didnt want squabbles you shouldnt have gone for titles which are a stretch lol

sincd doubt anyone would have even blinked at the fact if some titles currently went missing :)

There's no truth in this statement though. We can just discuss the genre and not fight about what's in the OP. Not hard.

This thread has made it abundantly clear you're not a very good arbiter of what counts as a hunting game or not, so
In this case they're right though. Fantasy Life is definitely not a hunting game.

It does fit their extremely loose definition of any action RPG with character customisation and a vaguely mission based structure though. So there's that.

Discuss what genre? Because there are several distinct different genres in the OP alone, just that they're all, for whatever reason, being called Hunting Action by the OP.

Did some reading and I think it's closer to Animal Crossing than anything else.

Hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa XD
Sorry, but that's the problem of reviewers with a lack of video game culture so don't trust them easely.

Just go on Gamefaq and you will see many replies that will say :
Fantasy Life is like a cute Skirym or dragon quest 9 or Rune Factory or cute Monster hunter or mmorpg like game.(And that just one topic, there're more topics like this that proves that Fantasy Life in not an Animal crossing like game)

It has no social aspect or customisation depth like Animal crossing at all.
Anyone with some video culture who watched Tree house play or even some trailer will have understood that a little bit at least before playing the game.
Or just read the thread of Neogaf tht I liked before : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=898070

Great thread
So I guess to start, what games in the genre do you have and which is your favorite?

Phantasy Star, God Eater, SAO, and Freedom Wars next week.
God Eater is my favorite series so far. Really hoping GE2 Rage Burst gets localized.

I tried playing Monster Hunter once (the demo on the 3DS eshop) and I dunno.. it just felt really slow to me since I was used to the fast paced action in God Eater.

Man, this thread reminded me that I never did finish the Original Crystal Chronicles, and I LOVE that game. I may have to play that on my channel in the near future.

Phantasy Star Online 2.... my first foray into the genre, and I never took it online lol. I should try some of the later games.

Meanwhile... still playing MH3U and CANNOT F*ING WAIT for MH4U.

you got the understanding of the statement wrong as the OP is clearly unhappy with the fact folks dont agree with the original list. Therefore there is truth behind the statement that if the OP wanted more on topic convos the list should be a bit more focused instead of trying to fluff it up a bit.

There are two camps phantasy star type of loot based action rpg or monster hunter based which is going mainly after large targets for resources to use in order to obtain better equipment. Both of these which are designed more with coop being a main feature of the title.

not counting the 2 s korean mmos at the bottom i literally own / played overything else on the list. and unreleased titles also dont count obviously :)

The original Chrystal Chronicles was such an amazing game that nobody got to play. The GBA stuff killed it before it even launched... The DS games also don't do it the justice it deserves. One of my fav GC titles

Hah, lol. Fair enough

Yeah I had to finish it solo since my brothers stopped playing it with me... The games combat is really REALLY gimped in single player.

im curious if that system was created due to some sort of technical limitation

This is not a good way to have discussion All I'm saying is that if you want a focused OP you have a focused OP, if you want something this broad and all encompassing then you shouldn't be trying to label them all as something that is a very specific and niche genre. Just call them Action RPGs as a blanket term instead of trying to abstrusely fit them into a genre that they won't.

Pretty much this:
you got the understanding of the statement wrong as the OP is clearly unhappy with the fact folks dont agree with the original list. I'm not a big fan of CC but the art-style was top-notch, holy shit. I wish FFE looked like that. :(
Yeah CC really shined with its art. It used some FF9 designs but it still had an amazing and unique atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, it's world building was top notch. Enough information to give a back story, but not enough to explain everything. Gives everything a neat air of mystery and wonder about it. The openings to each level was also such a little touch that made such a big impact.

Yep, and I love the Celtic music style. The races were very cool, too.
