Splatoon and Sunset Overdrive are the most important games this generation

How well they will actually turn out is anyone's guess since they are not out yet but depending on how successful they are, it could have serious implications for this generation. Why do I think this? The answer is 2 fold:

1) Creativity
Both Splatoon and Sunset Overdrive seem to fall into familiar territory with their respective genres but both games breathe new life into it either by unconventional travel methods, unconventional weaponry or in the case of Splatoon making the goal NOT to kill the other player but to claim the majority of the map.

2) Art direction
These games are rich with style and both are not afraid at all to be colorful. This is nothing new for Nintendo but the fps tps genre for them is. For Sunset Overdrive this game is bold enough to have color and style whereas most other third person shooters are some spectrum of brown.

So, the first person and third person shooter genres I believe could seriously use some shaking up and I think these games are the ones to do it. If these fail we could be hiding behind brown waist high objects or running through yet another military campaign for a long, long time.

I just had déjà vu that I would have déjà vu reading this kind of thread, and then déjà vu about writing this exact comment about it.

I think it is because of your Wren avatar OP.

On topic: Sunset isn't really important. I would be nice if it didn't suck thougj.

PvZ was a great/is a game. Id say its just as colorful and creative as the titles mentioned. Sunset Overdrive really reminds me of Rachet and Clank except with more human characters. Either way looking forward to testing the mechanics in Splatoon.

Sunset Overdrive? I don't think so even a little bit. It's Infamous plus Tony Hawk from the looks of it. I think one of the previews said pretty much exactly that. Who knows though. We'll see in a week or so.

I somewhat agree. I want to see these both do well and have an impact on the shooter genre as a whole.

Splatoon will be day 1 for me, and Sunset Overdrive would be if I had an Xbone. I'll get it with the system at some point though.

Though maybe they're just the most important shooters :p

sunset overdrive, while potentially awesome, looks like a mishmash of your popular, over-the-top action games such as ratchet and clank, dead rising, infamous, jet-set radio, etc. nothing i have seen demonstrates novelty.

There's tons of games where you're competing to paint over an area before someone else. I don't see how adding a reticle to it makes it somehow more important.

because you feel shooters are the most important genre still ?
I don't know. Also, I miss Destiny on that list, because it's a great example of a colourful shooter that isn't over stylised.

I have to agree because it seems many AAA games lack color and creativity.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and Stick of Truth are the only other games I can think that has both things.

Edit: Nintendo games tend to have both. Mario Kart 8 and Smash for example...
It is also too hyperbole to say if they are important or not. Both should be examples of what future games should strive for though in presentation.

I don't really get the art style point to be honest I see a big emergence of color and creativity art wise in some upcoming games. Even some that have past like PvZ for one.

In a world of grey and brown gritty shooters, seeing something with some pop is always welcome. I would say Splatoon is more down the lines of what Nintendo always do but the game style could be the risk. Sunset is just expanding the Xbox Ones list of games but a new IP can always be a bit risky, no matter what console is appears on.

I hope they both do well amongst plenty of big sequels to massive games.

They could be, I guess. But I really don't expect it. Splatoon, simply by virtue of being on the Wii U probably won't have a huge impact on the industry. I'm quite thrilled for the game but it still remains to be seen how it'll play in its finished state and what they do with the single player. SO also looks damn cool but I don't really see why it would impact other games in any meaningful way. We've had games with unorthodox traversal and creative weapons before. That didn't affect most games either.

I agree about Splatoon (I hope the execution is good on this one), but while Sunset sure looks fun, it's just so obviously Infamous. I don't get how that's not a popular opinion (in the media).

Both games look promising but calling them the most important games of the generation is not only laughable hyperbole but also impossible to prove right now.

We should have this discussion when the next generation of consoles is around the corner I think.

I disagree with the art direction, Borderlands is a very successful franchise with it's unique art style and that became the exception, I think with devs always aiming for the "cinematic" *barf* experience, Splatoon and Sunset Overdrive are going to do fuck all in the overall grand scheme of things.

Besides we're starting to see more colour in games anyway because lighting is the old new hotness.

Hype knows no bounds. Good lord.

Also, it's shooters, not "fps" in reference to Splatoon. I mean, neither are FPS. And most third person shooters are not "brown", I think you're thinking of military shooters which happen to mostly be First Person.

Splatoon will do well, but most important? It's a little way too early to be saying stuff like that, don't you think?

Batteries the CRISIS!
Sunset Overdrive isn't really important (as far as influencing how games get made) unless it's a mega hit — like, 5 million sales at least. If it just does OK, it won't change anything.

The situation is similar for Splatoon. It would need to be so big that people start buying Wii Us for it; otherwise, it won't prove to other developers that its design philosophies need to be copied to attain financial success in today's market.

This.

Both look cool and refreshing. But most important games? Ehhhhh

The most important game will be Bloodborne and The Witcher 3. If these games outsell everything till Batman arrives, then the shift will go back to adventure games. We need more swords/magic and less guns.

This is definitely the most hyperbolic thread this generation.

Also, original poster appears to have completely missed Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare, which is an utterly amazing team based shooter that is also insane and completely different in style and direction to other FPSs out there.

Holy hyperbole.

Are you really suggesting that sunset overdrive is not just an
awesome
mash up of previously released games?

Sunset would be way more important to GAF of it wasn't XB1 exclusive.

What.

OP is either really young or can't remember the PS2/dreamcast days. There's nothing innovative here in gameplay or art style, but there's a lot that's iterative.

Just because something something is more colourful I don't find it inherently better. I mean it's refreshing to see but it doesn't mean shit if the game isn't good. Inb4 people start defending sunset overdrive. I'm not saying the game isn't, just saying in general.

Also when this gen is over people will barely discuss these games. Other than the butt of a few jokes. That's my honest prediction.
