More news on the Mexican Grand Prix.

The new circuit layout will be like the last races on the champ car, more or the less.

Marussia in administation, ugh

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/116512
Marussia will definitely not compete in this weekend's United States Grand Prix, administrators appointed to oversee the Formula 1 team have confirmed.

FRP Advisory LLP was appointed to administrate Marussia's trading company, Manor Grand Prix Racing Limited, on Monday.

With a lack of funding available to justify continuing racing the firm felt it best Marussia sits out the Austin event.

Geoff Rowley, joint administrator, said: "With the existing shareholder unable to provide the required level of funding, the senior management team has worked tirelessly to bring new investment to the team to secure its long term future.

"But regrettably has been unable to do so within the time available. Therefore, they have been left with no alternative but to place the company into administration."

FRP said that Marussia would continue to operate while it looks at longer term options for the company, and that no redundancies had been made.

The statement added: "Following Austin, there are two further rounds of the 2014 championship remaining, in Sao Paulo and Abu Dhabi, and the team's participation in those races will depend on the outcome of the administration process and any related negotiations with interested parties in what is a very limited window of opportunity.

"No redundancies have been made following the company's entering into administration and all staff have been paid in full to the end of October. The ongoing staff position will however be dependent on whether the company can secure new investment in the limited time available.

"We remain highly focused on engaging with interested parties."

Marussia's absence from the United States GP means there will be only 18 cars on the grid, with Caterham having also gone into administration last week.

It will be the smallest grid since the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, when BAR was forced to sit out the weekend as punishment for a rules infringement relating to its fuel tank.

So not worth it
Why would anyone care about Marussia or Caterham? Really? Unless you have a stake in one of their drivers, and granted it would probably put a US driver on the field, they're still the teams that are just "there" and it's not like Rossi wouldn't have come in dead last or second to last.

I would assume you go there to see the top of the field, not the bottom.

I think the US fans will be just fine with seeing the F1 drivers do their thing, even without the two bottom teams. It's not like it's a 2005 situation.

Plenty of people support drivers in the lower teams. Admittedly not as many as in the big teams, but the supporters are still there.

For instance, my wife and I were absolutely gutted to not get to meet Kobayashi at Spa.

Is it the only reason you went to Spa though? Come on, I loved Minardi when it had Dutch drivers too, but all they did was drive 5 laps behind the rest of the field and that's it.

Fun, but hardly the main attraction of GP weekend.

Well done Bernie.

I'm sure the US fans will be thrilled about that.

Theyll be more disappointed by the fact that the 30k muscle car their daddy drives sounds better than the F1 cars that will be flying around that weekend. I would hazard a guess that a huge chunk of fans have no idea about the new, quiet turbo engines and anticipate a good racket of sound.

I cannot imagine that a huge chunk of people paying to go to that race isn't aware of the change in noise. The people that are going are fans of F1 from across the US. Not hicks who just think its cars going zoom zoom.

Indeed. When we went to Austin, the majority of people were not only big fans but far more traveled and worldly than any other sports event I have attended in the US, including Olympics.

Its not all about the drivers you know.
These teams are the breeding grounds of newly graduated and emerging engineers/designers into F1. Without them, many will never get work in this field and may leave for other motorsport fields if lucky or leave the industry all together.

This is true, but has little to nothing to do with US fans "not being thrilled" by not getting to see Marussia. I'd wager the Marussia-fan demographic is very low.

Sad news about caterham and marussia. Hope they'll find a way to start in 2015.

Will the Quali Knockout places change for US? With only 18 cars, there would only one dropout in Q1...

That's not right is it? 22 cars, minus 4 cars is 18 cars. Vettel not qualifying, 17 cars. 16 to go through, 1 drops out.

Or is that wrong?

Yeah I had it actually wrong. It's six dropping out in Q1. For some reason I thought it was usually Marussia, Caterham and one more.

Yeah. Though frankly I still think he'd be better off just taking the penalty and starting in 14th or something.

Whole new PU is a pitlane start. If you only replace individual parts you get grid penalties which can tot up. Might as well get a whole new everything and take the pitlane penalty.

Should something happen to Rosberg or Hamilton in Q1 or 2 you can bet your ass they'll do the same.

Ahh ok, I thought they only had to start from the pitlane if they actually replaced it on race weekend rather than introducing a new engine beforehand.

No, any use of a 6th component will incur a penalty (varies for how many 6th parts you're using), no matter when it's introduced. Any replacement of the whole PU is a pitlane start, no matter when it's introduced.

I'm always amused by the "shit track" forum comments whenever a blueprint for a new circuit is posted.

There are so many subtleties of a track that can lead to great racing which can't be gathered from a simple bluperint, that it's amazing everyone's an expert in making such broad and final generalizations.

I get that the Tilke effect has disillusioned a lot of fans, but immediately writing off every venue for not being Suzuka, Spa, etc. is getting really silly.

a team's third car will be picked randomly before each event, the third car can only score WCC points, the third car can only be driven by a reserve driver / rookie

wrap it up, f1 is done. also means alonso's mercedes dream is in ruins.

R.I.P Manor Racing
LOL F1 seems to attract such attention seeking characters. Really stupid of the Telegraph to give them an article.

Audi denied the claims of it going to F1, and said that they are committed with WEC.
Of course they're going to deny, you expected them to confirm because of the Auto Express article?

Not saying it's happening (not sure the VW group like the politics of F1) but it's a pretty standard denial.

What I do know is Piech doesn't fuck around. If they do come into F1, they're going to be competitive.

Anyone have any ideas why two teams all of a sudden this year went kaput? Would it be having to develop a car around a new PU, or something more?

Hammer? What's your take on it? Anyone else? Just a coincidence?

Teams aren't making up the extra money to pay for the increase in the power unit cost.
And sponsorship is hard to find.

Analysis: Why small teams can't afford F1 amid Caterham/Marussia woe

The breakdown for an average team went as follows:

Hybrid power system $28 million
Gearbox and hydraulics $5 million
Fuel and lubricants $1.5 million
Tyres $1.8 million
Electronics $1.95 million
IT $3 million
Salaries $20 million
Travel and trackside facilities $12 million
Chassis production/manufacturing $20 million
Windtunnel/CFD facilities $18.5 million
Utilities and factory maintenance $2 million
HR and professional services $1.5 million
Freight $5 million
TOTAL $120.25 million

Ferrari is waiting to see if they need Alonso for their third car before cutting him loose.

what good is that? if the third car happens the reserve drivers have to drive. no super teams allowed.

saward also mentioned a third car lottery before each race, he must be on the piss take? f1 is dead if it's true, who wants to see random third cars driven by scrubs?
