Setting an end on the Kenway Saga (Assassin’s Creed III, Black Flag, Rogue), you step into the foot of Shay Patrick Cormac, a 21-year old man who was recruited into the Assassins only to be betrayed. Disillusioned, Cormac turns to the Templar Order. It is now time for Shay to have his revenge, the actions of which will put a scar upon the Assassin Order.

The story of Rogue takes place in the mid-18th century during the Seven Years War. Shay will visit various North American locations such as the North Atlantic, Appalachian River Valley, Alabama, New York, and Quebec.

Various characters from both Black Flag and ACIII will make an appearance.

Returning from Black Flag, you’re once again in control of a ship, the Morrigan, this time the ship is a shallower draft which allows the player to travel down rivers and move faster. Unlike in Black Flag however, when you begin ship combat, enemies can now board your ship rather than being confined to their own. You can also release oil slicks which can be ignited. Due to the cold environment, you can no longer go underwater and when in water you are constantly damaged. You will also need to use the ship’s ram to break through ice in order to access various areas. When in the River Valley, a mixture of land and naval based gameplay will be used.

On land you will be fighting with the new air rifle, a deadly silent weapon that allows different ammunition types to be used, all of which have various different effects. A grenade launcher can also be used, which can shoot shrapnel grenades among other things. Lastly due to the nature of the story, you will be fighting Assassins, who possess various skills that in the past have only been usable by the player. From hiding in bushes to attacking from the air, beware of the Assassins. Various other mechanics have been added, such as compass which indicates a target's position or whispers that can be heard when a foe lurks by.

Outside of these however, the game functions many ways similar to Black Flag, even sharing many UI elements.

There is also no penalty for killing civilians.

Unlike Unity and Blackflag, Rogue has neither co-op nor competitive multiplayer, making it the first game since Assassin’s Creed II to feature only single player.

EXTRA STUFF:

Nothing to see here at the moment.

Seen the entire story of this game, story is way better than I was expecting. Excellent closing interquel of the Kenway Trilogy and
a fantastic tie in to AC:Unity.

Kinda weird it's last-gen only, hope it comes to PS4 as I loved Black Flag. Engine of Unity looks like a massive improvement, but I like the story pitch, period and general philosophy of Rogue a lot more - not enough to buy a full price game on last-gen in this crazy holiday season though.

And this is where they make a mistake : Rogue has to played before Unity for story and gameplay purposes, but they release the same day (and it was planned for ACU to be released 2 weeks before) and we won't see a next-gen release before 6 months.

I watched a bit of a play through and it pretty much is Black Flag 2. No complaints from me. Just bring it on over to the new systems ASAP.

Without spoilers...it's better to play Rogue 1st?

I decided to get this one instead of Unity. I hope I made the right call.

Maybe it's just because I'm an American, but the setting looks way more interesting to me. I liked the frontier in AC3, I liked the sea in ACIV, and I've always liked snowy levels.

I like how much quicker and more maneuverable the new ship looks.

However, I'm not sure about the stalker enemies, or having to chase down Assassins. Seems like both of those could get really annoying.

Still, if it's true that there are no eavesdropping/tailing missions in this one, that's a tradeoff that I'm willing to take.

Gonna be weird going back to the Dualshock 3 after using the Dualshock 4 so much, though.

Not gonna lie, completely forgot about this. I remember hearing rumours that this would show up on PS4, how likely is that do you think?

This is a big spoiler. As in ending spoilers, read at your your own risk.
Just the ending to Rogue is relevant to Unity. As Shay is the person who killed Arno's father. Amancio referred to it as a mystery so maybe Arno never finds out who did it.

Was gonna wait for this on PS3, but now I'm thinking of getting it on PS3 alongside Unity on PS4 and playing it first. What do you guys think?

I gotta be honest, I'm really looking forward to playing this game more than I am Unity on the PS4. I just think the environment this game puts itself in, like IV, shakes things up.

I agree. The huge world of Black Flag and the ship stuff was so enjoyable, the variety of locations you visit in Rogue just seems so much more exciting to me. And plus, snow levels Ftw

Wait...they're releasing two AC games on the same day? That's crazy. Unity definitely looks a lot more interesting though, I was sick of the American setting after III (though I thought it worked well for that game).

That's what I'm doing. But I may import the LE of this. I have LEs for all AC games. I need the full set cause I'm a sucker.

Crossing Eden > I read your spoilers in another thread about
how Unity's beginning is Rogue's ending
but I don't want to read more until I finish Unity.

From what I know (I didn't play Rogue or Unity, I just now how they are linked), this is how it is meant to be played. If you don't want to play Rogue on PS4 or XBO, playing the old gameplay with old graphics (Rogue) then new gameplay and graphics (Unity) makes sense for me.

It's going to be hard for me to go back to the AC3-cycle of games, I'm still tired of the gameplay, including the ships, and I don't want to hear about flawed tailing and ears-dropping anymore.

I almost wish I hadn't seen this topic. Having played Black Flag on the PS4 there's no way I want to travel back in time graphically to play a sequel. Unity doesn't have the appeal.

Bummer on the PC release date but I'll just have to wait it out. Doubt Unity will run well on my PC. Nice OT BTW. Didn't even know a PC version was being considered.

I really hope they do port this over to the current consoles. Hopefully Unity will keep me busy until then.

Damn straight. I want to sail the icy seas under the northern lights and hunt assassins as a Templar. But Unity is going to be amazing, so it's all good. I can wait.

I'm one of those weirdos who likes the present day frame story. Looking forward to seeing what nonsense Ubisoft has in store for it.

Yes, last gen only is...weird and unfortunate. Guessing this changes in the future.

Oh, so you're talking about this purely from a gameplay perspective? lol, that doesn't bother me one bit.
Yikes for people who can't change game mechanics.

Ugh, so torn. Would love to play this first, but I don't want to get burned out for what appears to be the main course in Unity. No idea if I want to wiki a story recap, watch a Youtube playthrough, or remain unspoiled and wait for the inevitable next gen release.

or
Shay is Unity's main villain and we don't know yet

Hmm If this should be played first I'll probably get it this week and then play unity over the holidays. Like someone else said though sort of stupid to have played ACIV on PS4 and then play this on last gen.

Already have both Rogue (and Unity) pre-ordered and will be picking up both Tuesday. Was going to play Unity first because im more hyped for Rogue and wanted to save it for last but considering the fact that the gameplay has changed in Unity while Rogue copied Black Flag, im better off playing Rogue first. Earlier this year, I played Liberation HD after already completing Black Flag and just wasn't into it as much but figured that had more to do with playing it after Black Flag as opposed to before. Thinking about it that way, I don't want to make the same mistake twice so I'll play Rogue first and then, I'll move on to Unity. After all, with Rogue, Unity and Far Cry 4, im set until February so no need to rush through any of them.
