French politician: Assassin's Creed: Unity 'makes travesty of the French Revolution'

Popular video game Assassin's Creed: Unity has become the unlikely target of an attack by a French firebrand politician who argues that the blockbuster video game makes a travesty of the French Revolution.

Former French minister Jean-Luc Mélenchon has said the game feeds on the same anti-republican sentiment that fuels the far-right extremists of today.

Assassin's Creed outrageously presents people like the "cretin" Marie-Antoinette and the "treacherous" King Louis XVI as fine upstanding people, while it portrays the French masses, the sans-culottes, as bloodthirsty savages, Mr Mélenchon said.

Worst of all, it depicts Robespierre as a monster when in reality he said he was initially a hero of the 1789 Revolution who gave the vote to Jews and wanted to extend it to women, said Mr Mélenchon, a former minister who left the mainstream Socialists to form his own far-left Front de Gauche party.

"It is propaganda against the people, the people who are (portrayed as) barbarians, bloodthirsty savages," he said.

"In 1789 there were the poor aristocrats, and they are presented as fine upstanding people."

He noted that the king had tried to get foreign armies to come to France to save him, and that his wife Marie-Antoinette, "that cretin, who is celebrated as a poor little rich girl" had tried to buy off politicians to save her skin.

"And the man who was our liberator at a certain moment of the Revolution – because the Revolution lasted a long time – Robespierre, is presented as a monster," said the politician who got 11 per cent of the vote in his failed bid for the French presidency in 2012.

Mr Mélenchon concluded his tirade against the game by saying that it "presents an image of hatred of the Revolution, hatred of the people, hatred of the republic which is rampant in the far-right milieux (of today)."

Honest question, did Ubisoft ever claimed this was as accurate as possible?

Robespierre is normally portrayed as a pretty terrible dude, when the words 'reign of terror' are the first thing associated to your name you can't expect any sympathy

So he's saying that it wasn't barbaric for masses of people to storm into people's houses, decapitate them, and parade their heads around on pikes?

I don't think it takes a lot to portray Robespierre as a bad guy (because he was), but the game does seem perhaps slightly nostalgic for the Ancien Regime, if only because the combat is awful and frequent against the regular people and no-panters.

But most of all the french Revolution in the game is barely there. It's background noise. The pendulum swung completely the other way from ass crud 3, where for some reason you were on Paul revere's ride. Now it's like...oh yeah there's an angry mob outside but whatever.

Does anyone really have to run interference for Marie Antoinette? History has ruined her. What the fuck does it matter what some shitty Ubifactory production have to say about things?

They actually avoided putting Arno into every event of the revolution. And didn't pick sides with the revolution, the revolution is just a backdrop to Elise and Arno's tale but you can find an absolute shit ton of information in the database like in the other games.

I seriously don't understand how these types of posts are allowed on this forum, let alone from a mod.

What are you 12?

I mean, does it really take a video game to make a travesty of the French Revolution? The period pretty much did it for itself. How is it propaganda when there is an era known as the Reign of Terror?

I said nothing controversial, and you didn't address my thesis at all. Besides, I doubt most 12 year old non-Frenchmen can really tell you much about the French Revolution.

edit: oh, I would apologize for saying retarded. Sorry. Slipped.

But not for Ubifactory.

I have a lot of shit to say about Unity, but its worst crime is portraying Robespierre as a monster? LOL.

These are all immensely complex figures that the AC formula wouldn't really allow for an accurate or multilayered portrayal of them anyway, and it's hardly super controversial that Robespierre is often painted in a negative light. I mean I've never been to school in France but do they teach that Robespierre was a hero without painting the complete portrait of what the man actually did?

Now you'll never be able to criticize GamerGate again without this being dredged up and used against you fifteen thousand times!

I'm pretty sure Robespierre was a monster, there would probably no france anymore if they didn't stop him from executing all the people.

Ass crud is a joke but yeah the term retarded isn't very PC. I try to avoid saying it.

I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying to forget the Paul Revere mission from AC3. That was the dumbest thing I've ever had to do in a video game and I've played a lot of really dumb games.

Guy should just be glad he didn't have to sit through the butchering of American history that was Assassin's Creed 3. I mean damn.

Sounds like a political message rather than one that seeks to educate.

The slight nostalgia for the old regime isn't surprising. The game was made in Canada after all

Aldo Robespierre was a psycho who saved the revolution by decapitating every opponent, with more than a few collateral casualities (and some like what happened in Vendée prety much intentionnal)

In the end, it was justice to have him on the chopping block :p
