My archer's controlled by the AI though. I just set the ranged DPS to hold their position and shoot from the rear.

Let me just say I love this game! Im now 30 hours in...and havnt even closed the breach yet. I just got done playing for the night, and killed my first dragon, the hinterlands one! OMG...best epic dragon fight in a video game that I have ever experienced.

I feel like I am still learning things that I should of known at the beginning of the game! How many people knew that pushing left on the d-pad opens up the map! I just learned that yesterday at about 22 hours in!

Also, Ive learned that setting your ranged dps to follow...themselves...keeps them from running around like a fool during fights...and your melee behaviour set to defend...themselves...makes them pick the closest target and start dps'in them. Those settings and using "attack my target" have helped me nail killer fights that I was having difficulty with at first.

So my first dragon fight...I was handed my arse several times. I changed my behaviour settings and set it that only i would choose when my guys would potions...and came back with my team...of myself, a mage lvl 11, and my crew was level 10...vivienne, dorian, and cassandra. Fight took about fifteen minutes, and it was touch and go at the end...but I prevailed!!

Now tomorrow I am off to close the breach!!

Wow, you beat the dragon before closing the breach? At level 10s? You might want to bump up the difficulty unless you don't mind steamrolling through the rest of the game.

OMG you're a genius.

Thanks for the tips; they'll make Varric a great deal less stupid.

It's a real shame that Bioware gutted the tactical aspect of the combat.

Yah, actually thought of that...I am getting worried that I might be overleveling the game some...but this is my first play through...so not too worried about it. I am having fun, and if it gets too easy...will definitely bump up the difficulty asap!

This game is exactly what I have been wanting to play for an RPG.

The last game I lost myself in like this was Dragons Dogma!

Huh. So if they follow themselves... they'll still follow you during normal exploration, but not move around when in combat? That's great, I'll have to use that.

These commands are completely counter-intuitive though. I don't know any normal person who would think that setting an AI to follow itself would be a good idea.

I would have assumed the option to follow themself even showing up was unintentional.

If this setting stops Varric from disengaging to go stand beside me (two meters from enemy or closer) then I'll be very pleased.

Missed one.

That attack isn't AOE so you'll have a tough time targetting it in such a way... I think.

If you set them to follow themselves, they attack at the appropriate range for their weapons and skills. Archers and Mages will attack at range, rogues and warriors will stay in melee range.

If you set Vivienne (a KE) to use ranged spells and Spirit Blade, she'll run in to use Spirit Blade, but then run back to long range to cast her other spells. And archers with Elevated Shot will actually jump up on rocks before using the skill.

There's a lot of really boneheaded, completely counterintuitive UI decisions in this game. Boggles the mind when so much care was put in other places.

This, coupled with the absolutely crazy-sized regions makes me wonder how long they were developing a multiplayer game before switching over to a proper single-player experience. Some of it really doesn't gel properly.

I romanced Cassandra and let me tell ya, she likes
the D
.

I'm sure she does.

Let's never speak of this again

Sure, mate. Which one by the way, the pic or the tsundere part?

This is indeed brilliant. I'll try it out later.

Actually, I think it makes sense in a weird way. For example, Dorian will follow a melee Inquisitor into close range battle instead of staying back because the Inquisitor ordered him to "follow me." The command to "follow yourself" is like the Inquisitor saying "hey Dorian, do what you think is best." Then Dorian goes "oh, I can cast spells, why would I go into melee range?"

That's not really what most people think of when they see the command "follow yourself" though.

They think it'll be like this:

Incredible, 149 hours later and the adventure is over.

I don't even know what to do now, except maybe wait impatiently for Mass Effect 4 or whatever it'll be called. Keep on trucking BioWare.

Are there any benefits to 2h warriors over sword and shield?

Well they do more damage and have better aoe, but they're squishy as hell so that's kinda meh. For AI I'd say use shields(or use another class), for the player matter of taste but unless you play on normal and maybe hard, you'll need a tank if you plan on going 2H.

Just finished the story. As much as I liked individual elements, the game was a bit of a disappointment to me. Way too few epic story missions, and way too many mundane side missions. I wanted to adore it, but ended up feeling ambivalent about not only the ending, but also the journey itself. I never really felt like my choices affected the world around me as much as I wanted them to, and certainly not as much as they did in DA:O.

Oh well.

I like how the game throws 100 filler quests at you right in the beginning. I regret picking them all up since they all seem so inconsequential.

I'm going back in for a solo Archer run. I might try it on Nightmare but we'll see.

That's a bit of a problem with the game in general. The entire campaign is chock full of these Assassin's Creed-ish/MMO-ish collection quests that feel inconsequential. It's a bit too much filler. I'm not saying that DAO didn't have these either, I'm trying not to look to the past with rose-tinted glasses, but the ratio of filler to meat seemed more balanced.

Even just collecting party members feels lackadaisical and half-hearted a lot of time. You meet Vivienne, she says hi, and thirty seconds later... she's in your group. Arrive at Blackwall's hut... he's in your group. Get to the beach... Iron Bull's joined up for your cause. How about some actual story and substance and development of a bond or relationship before they decide to join this newfangled Inquisition? It's shocking how you acquire new party members in this game. i mean hell, I have more desire to get Harding to join my party than most of these people.

people shit on Vivienne for being a bitch but a bunch of the antagonistic banter has the other party member insulting her first. Even Blackwall is a dick to her. And compared to how Varric shits on some of the other NPCs, dunno why she's the one with such a bad rep.

That's not true in my case. Vivienne is the one who starts the antagonisms. She dismissed Blackwall's concern of her well being, and when he worryingly asked if he had offended, she continued to belittle the entire Grey Warden order. Naturally this led to bad blood between them in following banters.

She started off by stating that Sera does not fit the Inquisition, and naturally Sera proceeded to not take her seriously in subsequent banters.

She opened conversations by implying Solas is an uneducated apostate, Cole must be put down, etc, etc. She's so polite about it, too.

Indeed. I was shocked when I found that I just recruited my companions in a matter of minutes. Sera's the longest I think, but that's still very short.

Bioware certainly can do better. Garrus' recruitment mission in ME2 is one of my favorites. There's a backstory on why he's there, why he's in that situation, and how will we get to him.

In all fairness, most of them are coming to you rather than the other way around. It's not like ME2 where you have to go out of your way to get these guys, they're actively trying to join the Inquisition.

There's this 2h unique sword you get from this elven ruin quest and it's lolgood. It's passive ability opens a rift and sucks in all the enemies nearby. So you can just run up to a mob and start using an upgraded whirlwind and pretty much wreck them all as chances are it'll proc on something and clump them all together for mayhem.

Well, but this is how we recruited Leliana, Zevran and Sten, too.

Morrigan joined just because Flemeth said so. Shale because why not. Dog is dog. Only person who had a real substantial reason was Alistar.

Of course the sequels should improve on this sort of thing but it's par for the course for Bioware.

I'm so glad Suspend/Resume works well for this game. It's great to turn on my Xbox and pick up right where I left off without having to load my save.

Dorian/Cole are both tied to storyline missions but you can only get one of them on a storyline mission in a given playthrough, the other just swoops in like a bat. The downside of tying companions to storyline missions is you can't get them till you reach that mission, so in the case of say Wynne and Oghren in DAO, you might miss them for most of your playthrough. On top of that, DAI's main storyline is pretty short so if they tied more companions in you wouldn't get to use/chat with a lot of them till the very end.

Arguably Cassandra/Solas/Varric are your Alistair/Daveth/Ser Jory counterparts, except it's like Daveth and Ser Jory didn't fart and die because they couldn't take a strong drink.

Everyone else in DAI is a sloooooooooow burn.

Yeah, I think this game handles recruitment better than most Bioware games. Only Sera and Cole really feel out of place in the Inquisition, everyone else's membership felt sufficiently motivated.

Ugh, not this shit again.

Ehhh... not so much. You first met Morrigan before the Ostagar rout. Got some insight into her life and mysterious ways. Then you woke up after the battle and had some more meaningful interactions with her and Flemeth before she joined.

Then with Shale, you had to do that whole dungeon down in the cellar with the demons. Then the puzzle thingy with the kitty demon. Then you'd got the key to unlock Shale. That was a big substantial quest.

That's a lot more substance than Vivienne or Blackwall's "hey, you're cool" 30 second joining up.

I really hope that there's an updated of animation engine Bioware is using for ME4. The lighting and visuals in general are great in DA:I. But man the animations are bad!! The time of folding arms are over!!! Lip syncing needs a lot of work, and traversal animation (running, jumping, Walking up inclines, etc.) are pretty poor considering the hardware capable of running this game.

I just had a romantic scene with Dorian and good lord it looks awkward as hell. Granted my Inquisitor is a Qunari still looked very clunky and robotic.

Other than that I Love this game.
