I made the decision to cut back on buying a lot of games too but that just means I'm cutting out indie games and b-tier full price releases. Only buy big tent poles like Bloodborne, Persona 5 and MGSV now. I'm helping fuel this AAA focused industry!

Seriously though, when I compare paying like 6 months for Netflix with a $60 video game, Netflix looks like way better value for entertainment.

I find that not buying every single indie bundle helps a lot. But at the same time here I am contemplating buying MGS GZ for pc purely because I bought a 1440p monitor.

In regards to open-world gaming in that PA strip, yes, I suffer from this. A lot of games that say "fuck structure, do whatever you want and go anywhere you want" get abandoned by me very quickly. Whereas I greatly enjoy games like Fallout 3/NV, the early GTAs, Oblivion, Stalker: SoC, and other games that have a cohesive mission structure and either sandbox you in for a while or provide a gentle nudge in certain directions.

That and I see earning the freedom to go anywhere on a map and do anything to be a reward. Either by virtue of playing the game or finally being powerful enough to beat the enemies in certain areas.

One thing I do hate in open-world games is a GPS system. Mainly because it's a fucking lazy handholding mechanic, but also because it negates the need to learn anything about the game. The maps of GTA3 and Vice City are ingrained in my head, but I couldn't tell you shit about GTA4. I just went where the game told me to go.

The only real con that I've read has something to do with them not disclosing if they've ever given information out regarding customers to the FBI. When asked if they can provide a warrant canary, they've always given a political answer along the lines of "not saying that you haven't doesn't mean that you ever have, and it's meaningless, anyway so you shouldn't bother." Given that they're based in the US, it gives many US based people pause for though.

Whether or not that would effect Australian based people is another matter, though.

20% off electronics on selected stores on eBay this Sunday. One of the stores is PC Case Gear which is cool.

The pccg ebay prices are more expensive than their website of course, but there still should be some savings. Also free shipping on a lot of stuff, and another 2% from cash rewards. Might be worth checking out if you've been putting off some pc upgrades.

Life is Strange - Episode 2 - Whoah. Emotional stuff. And stuff from one played into it pretty strongly. Now to decide whether I want to leave my bad choices to sit just to see the impact.

Based on my calculations, an intel NUC build will be like... 15-20 bucks cheaper thanks to this deal. Really modest saving. Far more expensive without the dicount. Like 100+ more.

So I've been procrastinating from finishing up my thesis proposal that's due tomorrow all day hoping that Pillars of Eternity would launch, turns out it doesn't launch until like 4am tomorrow morning.

Oh well.

Which NUC are you after? By my figgerin, the i5 NUC is $453.18 with this deal vs $539 (plus shipping?) on the website.

I'm spewing that the World Cup final is on Sunday. I've already committed to a day session of Shadows of Brimstone at my mates place who doesn't follow sport. Live updates on my phone will have to do.

Trying out these roast chicken pringles, shit is absolutely nasty. It's like they mixed up chicken stock powder and salt and coated each pringle with about 1kg of the mixture.

Would not buy again.

I remember being pretty excited to try those, and they were so awful I just chucked them away.

Here's a question for you, what do you do as a parent when a restaurant fails to provide any sort of changing facilities?

and/or

The change facilities are in the female branded toilets and you are a man?

I think that all public bathrooms (both men's and women's) should have a changing table. It isn't fair.

If I were in that lady's situation, however, I would have gone out to the car to change the baby. No car? I would go to the bathroom and use the toilet seat as a changing table. You can't justify doing that in the middle of a restaurant full of people, food, and drinks. Too many OHS issues and just generally a disgusting thing to do.

On another note, I started Bloodborne tonight after work, I only finished creating my character (gotta get up early tomorrow) but I think she's super pretty! I can't wait to get into it.

I was able to buy Hotline Miami 2 on Steam. It still thought I was in the UK.

But now when I go to buy the soundtrack, my Steam has switched to Australia. :/

I don't really play PC games much anymore, but damn if I'm not tempted to buy both Alien Isolation and Valkyria Chronicles in the Sega sale.

dude I have netflix, automated usenet downloads for everything else, video games and all the other entertainment I could ever want. And I'm unemployed / self employed.

I have never been so bored in my life.

Pretty much this.

I've had the idea of an all-in-one entertainment PC (gaming, movies, etc) since 2004 and its got to the point where I now have tens of thousands of games, movies and TV shows available to me at any time combined with the general infinite entertainment possibilities available to me on sites like YouTube and such.

I spend 80% of my time on the computer bored and wondering what I could be doing.

I just don't understand bored. All those years as a kid when I wanted to do stuff or play with things, now as a grown man I can be a kidult, I just can't fathom not having something to be excited about doing and doing it.

Stocked up on snacks, time to get on pillars of eternity.

Trying out these jalapeno cheese flavoured pringles, decent kick and cheesey taste.

Alien is totally worth whatever they are asking.
Valkyria Chronicles is totally worth whatever they are asking.
You bastards.

On the note of spending money I shouldn't, went in to a bank to chat about a loan... jesus, the amount of money you need up front even if you want to borrow a smallish amount is ridiculous. I'd need 5% (around $17k) savings, plus about another $15k in costs and other shit. Don't really need any of that if I have a guarantor, but I want to avoid that route.

No wonder the house ownership rates are so shit these days, they make it fucking impossible to buy one. How have people here managed to get their homes? Deposits or mostly relying on guarantors or using a personal loan to go towards a deposit?

20% deposit is preferable- you avoid mortgage insurance.

also, Sega sucks.

but ever so delicious
Shaneus. It's called saving... for years!

I have 20% to put towards a house, I just need to find one that's within my price range and I should be able to buy.

One day.

Get a partner, very hard to do on a single income.

Does anyone here have an opinion on the Private Internet Access VPN?

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/

I've heard of plenty of speed complaints with them, best to use Crikey's recent VPN roundup as a guide.

(and if its behind a paywall here's the pdf http://media.crikey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/VPN-table.pdf)

I'm currently using them and can vouch for speed issues. On an ADSL2+ connection with a 3.5km line length, any speed reductions occurring over 500KB/s would be invisible to me. I do see them drop to anywhere between 50–150KB/s. Download speed doesn't seem to spike down to these levels and bounce back, they tend to sit around that speed for a while.

It's not something a server change can't solve, but if you need to exit from a region with only one server it's not convenient. I'm usually using one on the US west coast as that's our best connection point.

Looking at the services linked by wonzo (PDF-only), they seem to be a better choice. I'm not sure what you're using the VPN for specifically, so I'm just going to assume Netflix with the bonus of obfuscating your online activity from prying eyes. With that in mind and after looking at Netflix Around the World, these other options have servers where Private Internet Access does not, for the purposes of accessing region-specific content. From what I can tell though, no one VPN provider I've seen covers all regions for this purpose.

Lack of time.
Malaise when getting home from work.
Other lifestyle points (being in relationship, gym, etc).
Whatever time you have you feel you should be using in a "constructive" way.

I'd say that getting older sucks, but I've been this way since 2006. The first indication of it was not playing my newly-purchased FF12 Limited Edition because of "not having enough time to dedicate to it." And throughout my many instances of unemployment or limited employment since then, to this day I've not played FF12. But I've "had enough time" to spend literally days playing Football Manager, Civ 5, Terraria, CoD and even fucking Jetpack Joyride.

I would guess the problem is choosing something to start. Sometimes it's easier just to keep going with something in progress that starting from scratch.

My downtime of playing video games is constructive, because it means I don't become someone who is defined by their job, it helps me to manage my stress and it's something I'm genuinely interested in.

I just don't understand bored.

Bored is the wrong word for it, 'my brain feels like it's melting' is the correct one.

I get that quite often. Probably related to energy levels too tbh.

I just don't understand bored.
There's been a bit recently about how being bored can be a good thing, and the constant firehose of entertainment availability potentially squashes creativity. Nowadays we're in a position where we don't have to be bored, but being bored can let your creative mind come to the forefront.

But I think the example of full pantry syndrome earlier mentioned is a good example. Choice blindness occurs when you have too many options available, and ultimately I think that's what is happening more than actually being bored and not having anything available to entertain you. Ever sat there, looked at your Steam library for 30 minutes, couldn't decide what to play and just went back on GAF? Perfect example.

I've been doing this with Cities: Skylines. I've read all 61 pages of the OT, but never once launched the game since downloading it on release day...

I don't like to judge. but in this case I'll make an exception

I double-dipped on Red Faction 1 and Red Faction Guerrilla when they were on sale on Steam and have been playing both (I skipped RF2 and Armageddon for reasons of they are complete shit).

RF1 (basically an enjoyable Half Life clone) was the game I got with my PS2 back in 2001. Guerrilla (which I had on 360) was one of those "nah, I'll skip that" until it got a lot of great word of mouth.

I went through most of RF1 again ad started on Guerrilla this morning. I so badly want another RF:G/ Crackdown/Saboteur style of open world game before Uni took over the open world genre.

I also had Just Cause 2 and RDR but they one never really clicked for me the way it did for other people.

I would probably play RDR if there was a PC version.

Also played many, many hours of JC2 and damn that is an amazing game.

And lastly, I too wish for a new Crackdown. And a new Red Faction 1.

I completed Red Faction 1 on PC back in 2003. Outside of the stealth levels it was a great game. It's a shame the sequel was so fucking godamn awful.

I've never given Guerilla or Armageddon any time. But the demo of Armageddon was as generic a game as you could get.
