Bloodborne Story and Lore Discussion Thread [Unmarked Spoilers]

Got the guide. Interesting interview with Miyazaki. He did keep things for himself regarding the lore. Outside of Rom being Female and Laurence's Skull being the "start" of the healing church, he wanted the lore to be interpreted by the players.

Paleblood refers to Rom's ritual of hiding the "blood moon." Also, another interpretation is the final boss after Gerhman (this is according to Miyazaki.)

Also, Miyazaki designed the map for the game. Reeks of awesome.

So is there no connection with Demon's Souls at all? The Umbasa leak in the alpha would have been it?

There is a corpse you can find in the chalice dungeons wearing flute armor that looks similar to the cover art of demon souls (the one with a dead guy with arrows in him). Also, Martyr L wields a sword that looks similar to a demon souls sword. Sort of a stretch I guess. It is in the "10 things you probably didn't know about BB" YouTube vid.

Oh yeah, she's definitely mourning. No doubt about it. I just...don't know who/what. She's a really really big question mark in general for me. The Rom speculation makes sense because in a game as specific and rarely coincidental as Bloodborne, the thing on the Altar being a SPIDER and one with the stoney many-eyed faces as the ones Rom summons is way too close to be chance. But it looks like one of her spiderpals and not her herself.
If you lock closely, that stoney spider seem to have died from the the pillars falling on him. With Ebrietas mourning him, and his similarity to Rom, maybe however Rom was made, he was made to replace him and, umm, cheer Ebrietas up! Of course that was a stupid idea and it completely failed, which earned Rom his "vacuous" title. :D

Huh! I thought some said the guide refer to Rom as a "he"?

This is an interesting theory. Something else to consider is that Gehrman changes his outfit in the final boss battle from the clothes he was supposed to wear during a hunt to wearing the top hat and Charred Hunter Set. That struck me as weird, but it makes more sense if "Gehrman" was simply another hunter acting as a replacement Gehrman.

Also find it odd how Gehrman tells you travel to Church Workshop which was ran by Ludwig who in a way abandoned Gehrman to found the main hunting group which the church used.

another thought on this. does anyone have an theories on the charred hunter clothes/gehrman connection to the hunter's dream workshop being on fire at the end?

I wonder how many other Demon's Souls references are floating around in the game besides what was shown in the Top 10 video and stuff like the Mindflayers being basically the exact same enemy.

The ones I know of are:
Pull chain to drop brain = tower of latria reference.
The One Reborn's arena and adds are a homage to Tower Knight
Soulbrandt weapon
Armor in the chalices
Umbasa in the beta
Mindflayer/Brainsuckers are kinda similar
Great ones/old one, which is a thematic similarity both referencing Lovecraft more so that a DeS homage.

The pyromancy using Old Lords related enemies are a clear Dark Souls nod as well.

Edit: oh and the eye covering motif, duh.

I posted the fair maiden like 3 OTs ago, keep up people! :p

Guide is out right? Any reference to this guy?
wlbIX3e.png

I need to know who the fuck this guy is. It's driving me crazy since day 1
Isn't that just Father G?
hqdefault.jpg

But, there's a VA in the credits for "blood minister", separate from Father G so... I'm confused.

There is an interesting theory by PariahdigmShift that this guy is Laurence before transformed into a beast...

The Choir may not have known either.

"Oh, fair maiden, why is it that you weep?""

I'll throw in my theory: Ebrietas was a Pthumerian who evolved into a Great One through experimentation. She weeps for her fallen civilization, and the corpse she cries over is that of another evolved Pthumerian who passed away. The dead Great One was the last link she had to her civilization, and likely her only "friend" after her transformation into a Great One. Her loneliness is why she is referred to as the left behind Great One.

The fact that it looks like Rom is an allusion to them both being evolved Great Ones. (of course, if you don't buy that Rom was once human, then this part of the theory doesn't make sense)

Although I'm not on board with your Ebrietas was once human theory, linking the Rosmarinus to Ebrietas was indeed quite perceptive of you, wow. I know many item descriptions by heart by this point, but I'd never even think about going back to the Rosmarinus, ever.

Can someone confirm this, or post a direct quote?

Cause we had a big fight whether or not killing Rom lifted a veil over the red moon tons of pages ago.

Miyazaki confirmed Paleblood sky refers to the red moon sky after Rom was killed.

He reaches so hard here.

"He's dressed well and he knows about the Hunter's Dream" Then he starts rock climbing from there.

DLC must be about Laurence though.

yeah I also found it improbable...but it makes sense in a way.

I really want to know who that is too :)

Just realized something. Ebrietas might be mourning over Rom's death at the alter just like above Vicar Amelia is mourning over Laurence at her altar.
Vicar Amelia isn't mourning, she's praying. Her monologue is about partaking in communion using the old blood.

But yeah, Ebrietas might be mourning. She might also be trying to fix Rom using the Altar of Despair. Lots of possibilities there.

ENB videos are so ridiculously fun to watch.

This morning I was like ok let's check out the first few minutes of this new video and I sat through the whole 40 minutes.

He always has something interesting to say about the lore or just the way he approaches gameplay and exploration is interesting.

Anyone have thoughts on why Vicar Amelia says "Seek the Old Blood" before transforming, but Master Willem says "Fear the Old Blood"?
Laurence founded the Healing Church on blood ministration, which led to him leaving Master Willem. Willem was wary of the Old Blood and Laurence said he would remember to be cautious with it, since the Old Blood was what eventually transformed people into beasts. The Healing Church over time grew more and more entwined with the Old Blood as a path to communion and evolution, forgetting the importance of Master Willem's adage. Vicar Amelia's prayer is a stark contrast to his words with how she says to "feast upon the Old Blood", blaming its dangers instead on the weakness of human-kind.

The fact that Willem still has some sense in him might mean he knows what "the old blood" does.
Wouldn't the insinuation, then, be that Willem knows we should be avoiding the Old Ones, but he is powerless to stop the growth of the Healing Church? Which means the hunter at Byrgenwerth is there to keep him quiet and controlled.

It's probably more that he became a voice that nobody wanted to listen to as they got caught up with the benefits of the old blood, as it is with a classic trope of a single man with a warning that falls on deaf ears.

Well I think it's more to keep others away from Rom, killing Rom lifts the veil and the truth of the world can be seen. What confuses me is why let the Hunt happen if in the end Grahem is going to "wake" you up in the end?

Just was gonna ask in general as I have been taking part in lore for a while but never saw anything about any of this:

So...what's up with the Witches and Hemwick Charnal Road? Did they steal Church info? Are they trying to achieve Old One communication through EYEBALLS? Are they part of the Church? What's the dealio?

The eyeballs are used for blood rituals. The Witches of Hemwick are similar to mobs you find in Unseen Village, which have an attack that attempts to gouge the player's eyes out.

If you go to Hemwick at nighttime, you'll notice new enemies that are summoned much like in Chalice Dungeons or Yar'ghul, and obviously the witches int he boss battle summon mobs.

Basically it's a place away from the Church where the two Witches practice arcane rituals.

Shiieeet, just watched it. I need to take a breather. I actually thought DkS lore was phenomenal. It seems so insignificant compared to Bloodborne. This game is on a whole different level.

meh i really dont think bloodborne lore is anywhere near on the same level, alot of bloodborne story is told in other ways

I was thinking that the old man at the beginning is just a Wheelchair Mob with a hat.
They both seem to share the same model.

#1 is new to me! (video by TerraMantis)

basically:
Auto-enucleation (oedipism) and other forms of serious self-inflicted eye injury are an extremely rare form of severe self-harm that usually results from mental illnesses involving acute psychosis (loss of contact with reality). The name comes from Oedipus of Greek mythology, who gouged out his eyes in penance for having sex with his mother and killing his father.
Oedipism is the root word for the Oedon temple

Well holy shit, this reminds me of someone

Question: Why do most statues and some NPC's have their eyes covered?

Two theories:

1. They have had their eyes removed by the Healing Church so that those higher up could use them to improve their insight.

2. They cover their external eyes so that their internal eyes (which are planted in the brain i.e Willem) can guide them to the Great Ones.
