Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One

Last-gen compatibility with wireless hardware on new consoles is not a rumor; it's happening. PS3 to PS4 with the existing hardware/dongle; Xbox 360 to Xbox One with a low-cost dongle you can purchase. First thing's first is testing this with the instruments we made, but we intend to support as many of those legacy wireless instruments as possible.

why can't every wireless 360 input device be compatible with Xbox One via that adapter?

That s the most pitiful and disinterested preview I have ever read. Still cannot believe there are "Journalists" that go to events mainly to drink, eat and talk about how jaded they are around videogames. I guess they just had nobody else to bother.

At least provide information, even if you don't actually like the game style.

ie could people just use their existing 360 Wireless PC adapter or will we have to buy this specific dongle

fake edit: dongle dongle dongle dongle dongle

Totally new thing. The radio that talks to the consoles is completely different now. Won't/can't get into details, but a 360 controller just doesn't work on an Xbox One for a whole bunch of reasons.

Cool and thanks for being open about it

edit: as a developer i have a general idea of why 360 won't work, but yeah it was just me wondering if MS wrote One drivers for that adapter. Also, I'll state that if any other developer wants to use that dongle in some way, please let them license it like Lab Zero is doing with their PS3 stick driver for PS4.

Its a pipe dream that wont happen, cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One is more likely

that's why a subscription based model...say $15 monthly for all the DLC you can enjoy would be amazing and would allow people to possibly not have to fork out tons of cash just to play with their friends on another console.

So, do the wired controllers still work on the new consoles? I've seen about getting support for the old wireless, but I still got my old RB1 guitar that I've been playing with and would like to use.

Plan on getting the big box just to have new drums and have a backup guitar, was just curious.

Looks like I'm keeping my shitty les Paul controller with the overactive orange fret as a back up then. Still in for a red full band bundle.

This also means I can use my Woodstrat on the One

Nothing like playing a fake guitar game with a real fake guitar.

RB3 was hilarious for that:a fake real guitar (Mustang), a real fake guitar (Woodstrat), a real guitar (Pro Strat), and a fake guitar (RB Strat, GHtars) could all be used with the game

rkPLZl.jpg

And even then I'm still aiming for a full bundle

That is impressive! I can see why you would want compatibility. I've mostly stuck with GH instruments (except for the craptastic drums - ugggh), but I envy your collection for sure.

Looks like my plan to get an Xbox One in the vain hopes RB4 would support old DLC/instruments is coming to fruition! Yay foresight!

Crossplatform DLC is no going to be permitted. So the turncloaks are out of luck.
I use that term in jest
as in microsoft to sony? 0% at least from harmonex.

I suppose there is a chance a third party might be able to come up with some sort of solution but even then it wouldn't be more than 0.5%.
Approximately never.

edit: Harmonix made the Pro Real Strat console-neutral and had you buy the separate MIDI Pro Adapter to use it, but even then Microsoft blocked them from letting you use the guitar's dpad and buttons to control the game, you had to use the MIDI Pro on the 360 to select songs and such.
Wow, that's doubly shitty. So either start over on a platform where most people are playing and rebuy not only your favourite songs but also have yet another set of plastic instruments lying around (I don't need a 5th guitar...), or play on a dead platform but spend a third of the money on just the game. Can we have a one console future already?

Fantastic.

I have multiple standard RB2 guitars, but for some reason the buttons have become stiff and unresponsive on two of them. No idea why. They were only used lightly. So, I may end up getting a new guitar anyway. But good news as I'll get to use the same drums and the wooden replica strat when I feel like busting it out. The buttons on it are great, but the strum bar is a little stiff.

Get a spoon, and use it to pop the buttons off and then undo the metal hooks that hold them in and clean them with a Q-tip.

Xbox One is a dead platform now? Or am I misreading this?

I need to do this soon, too - I also bought some aluminum tape just in case I needed to add something to reduce the travel. ;)

Still probably buying an RB4 bundle because I am a sucker.

Well, for me it is. All my friends are on PS4 now, so I'm either going to play alone on Xbox (or with randoms who keep fighting over which song to play) or I'll have to make the shift over to PS4 but have to start over.

How do Polygon's editors even greenlight an article like this? If I was their editor I would send it back with the notice 'at least pretend you give a shit'.
It's standard operating procedure for their writing. Their Project STEAM review literally had a line where it said that Gies let the reviewer stop playing the game because he didn't want to finish it in order to write the review.

Wait, are you saying the Xbox One is a dead platform? What?

Eh. You should probably just say that then lol. "Dead platform" has a very specific meaning without couching it in some context. Either way, it's amazing they've been able to get as much legacy stuff to work as it is. To expect anything cross platform was expecting way too much.

I hope not, monopolies are pretty awful.

I was hoping that any adapter they made would be universal, but since they are reusing the PS3 dongles, that's not an option anymore.

I almost considered buying two copies of the game based on the hope that I could just use my old guitar on both consoles, one to play my old songs and one to play with my friends/online, but that seems excessive at this point.

Being asked to rebuy songs and plastic instruments I already own is equally awful in my mind. lol

I just don't understand why we should expect anything along those lines when no other games offer it. HMX broke crazy new ground when it came to DLC last Gen and the fact that they have done as much as they can to make sure we can use everything possible that we have bought is amazing. I can't think of a game dev that has gone through this much effort to get this game as backwards compatible as HMX has and is. If they could do all the things we want they would. The thing is they can't so they don't.

Would you rather Polygon send somebody who is mega hyped for the game and will tell you it's the Holy City no matter what it's actually like? It's actually refreshing that there are articles out there that aren't all sploogefests.

At least he recognized the appeal, even if he didn't share it.

"someone tried to make me have fun, didn't care for it. watched others have fun. was still a shit experience. though good for them, i guess"

Is this an article about rock band 4 or someone's xanga?

I think I made peace with the DLC thing, because fair enough. The hardware stuff I'm a little disappointed by, but I probably should have expected it.

just allow me to transfer from my old gamertag to the new one and I'll be happy. I sold my xbox 3 years ago and forgot the information to login. Found it inside my rock band 3 case when moving this year only to already have a ton of purchases on my new account. Otherwise....I'll just label my xbox one as the primary user with the RB account and just do it that way.

I don't think you can transfer content licenses from gamertag to gamertag, but you can do it the second way you mentioned. Mark one account (the one you don't ever use) as the primary user on your Xbox One or whatever. Any other account can use all the DLC that account has access to, online or offline.

yes, I'll probably just end up doing that....probably a lot easier in the long haul anyways lol.

Once again I remember how HMX made me decide on my next console. I still own my old RB2 wireless drums (without the cymbals, sadly) but knowing that my guitar, mics and the drums are gonna work, along with my DLC just cemented the decision.

Here's hoping the bundles aren't extremely hard to find in Mexico, though; had a lot of trouble finding the damn wireless drums. ):

wait what the fuck is the guitar/bass doing here

edit: hold a sec, I can tell what legacy song they're playing. brb

edit2:

they're playing I Believe In A Thing Called Love at around the end of the solo

https://youtu.be/uv5OLvLDZ-I?t=140

Remember they have said they still have stuff they haven't talked about yet. They've shown so far what new things the drummer and vocalists can do. So this must be one of the new features for guitar/bass.

Looking at it again, that (freestyle?) section matches 1:1 to the notes covered by the regular guitar solo in the song.
