Dota 2 Reborn (new UI, Source 2, custom games, bot guided tutorials)

It's still Dota though, right?

Meh. Come back to me when I don't have to look at a fucking guide every time I play to figure out what I need to buy and what skills to take.

So, when the game is dumbed down or when you learn to turn the ingame guides?
I'm confused

I am dumbfounded at how massive a change this seems to be - mostly because I have become so used to the sheer wonky nature of old source and their UI / Menu systems. Looks much better

Guided bot matches / tutorials - yes please

Improved chat, party and communication - about time

DotaTV with Steam Broadcasting and Stats rolled into one along with being able to have the live event stuff in there too - oh yes yes yes

Rolling this info out slowly in what looks like 3 parts and no idea when I can use it - Damn you!

Am I missing some sort of sign up?

I think it's open beta once they release the 3rd preview thing from what they say on the site, so in 1week. Until then no beta I believe.

Edit: "Early next week we'll be talking about Custom Games, and later that week we'll conclude with various details about the new engine and launch the open beta."

If anything, you'll have to go into the Dota 2 Properties in Steam, go into the Betas tab and select it there. Don't know if it's there yet though.

What can you do in custom games?

Is that where you have like 5 pudges on each team or just mess around?

Run Kitty Run, Pudge Wars, Dragon Ball Z vs Naruto: Shonen Battle 2K3.

I'm sorry you have to learn and understand the incredibly complex game. Would you like it if it auto-did things for you so you didn't need to practice or get better?

This is massive. Surprised they've completely redesigned the menu. Looks awesome. Can't wait to hear more about custom games. Looks like we'll get to use the awesome old school browser for searching(and probably have some sort of matchmaking as well).

Looks snazzy.

I only play on and off because I've been trying to clear my backlog but I'm so tempted to buy those compedium chests. All the armor sets look fantastic in it.

Source 2 info dropping during/post E3 is kinda... interesting.

Still think they're going to show L4D3 somewhere.

Think more like WC3 Custom Games. You can make a custom map, set custom rules, make a completely weird gametype. The tools for it are already in beta, and there has been some various custom gametypes released, such as Pudge Wars, Mario Kart (everyone controls really slippery and you get runes to get items and stuff), and a lot more.

You can do a lot of stuff. Obviously the pudge wars stuff will be there, but you can do coop arpg stuff or tower defense for example. Custom games have been kinda testable for a while, someone has a semi working 3rd person arena FPS game for example.

for example, but think of wc3 custom maps if you ever played them
Nope.

So people can make maps and play on them? Pretty cool if true.

I stopped playing Dota 2 a year ago and just had a match 2 days ago. Nearly forgot how shitty the community is. I didn't want to get back into it but who knows, this might give it new life.

So the biggest question.

Are in-game items carrying over? I feel like they have to, but a change of engine would require every single item to be brought over and worked on right?

Hopefully someone smarter than me will reply to my question!

They are. All in-game items carry over to source 2

Thanks!

Hopefully this accelerates the pace at which we get Warcraft 4 multiplayer made inside the Dota 2 engine. The circle will be complete, nature in balance. Haven't seen any updates on the project in a bit.

That looks really slick, but still missing an improvement to my biggest issue: the size of the in-game UI. It's massive.

This is my biggest gripe to, it just covers up way to much of the screen/play area - its just way to big.

I absolutely love how HOTS did its in game UI, it just doesn't take up that much space and i much prefer the separate sections rather than one huge bottom bar covering the entire bottom section of the screen - still i can put up with it, because DOTA 2 is great :D.

Oh nice! So you opt in on the beta settings on Steam? Or is it jsut straight up replacing the current game?
It'll replace it eventually. I'm guessing it'll be in beta for a while and after most people have migrated they'll cut off the legacy client/engine and this new version will be the defacto. We've gotta wait until next week to hear on how they're going to do the beta.

It's a seperate entity for beta.

There is no way they would force a major update like this on the main client when TI5 is so close until they know it's up to snuff.

I'll probably give this a try once it leaves beta. About time I saw for myself why Dota 2 is so popular.
Dota 2 is going back more into beta

They will carry over. Source 2 is actually available in the Dota 2 Workshop tools, but I believe most if not all Source 1 assets should carry over with no problem. In fact I think it will allow for even more awesome stuff in cosmetics that Valve didn't allow before, most likely for performance reasons.

I'm most interested to see how much they copy over WC3 UMS vs SC2's Arcade style system which really fucked up map discovery and innovation / region publishing.

Why would you want to severely limit your vision?

Some people like to lock their camera in team fights so that the camera is always centred on their character. Makes it easier to keep track of your character and everything around it in a high-pressure and frantic situation.
