Sea of Thieves announced (Rare, XB1/PC, UE4, Pirates, Shared World Multiplayer)

I'm not going to lie. This announcement was a huge disappointment to me. I'm at the point in my gaming career where my sensibilities are quickly swinging away from MP, and more towards single player experiences where I can sit down and plow through at my own pace - when my schedule permits.

I was kind of hoping Rare's new game would fit that mold. I know I've been saying I'd rather the current Rare naturally develop their next title utilizing their own strengths and sensibilities, instead of trying to relive the "glory days" that they had no part of. But I'm still disappointed. That's not to say that the game doesn't look good. If this were 10 years ago, I'd be hyped. But these types of games (Fable Legends too) just don't do it for me anymore :(

Hopefully I'll see some stuff in the future that changes my mind.

My thoughts exactly. I'm sure that Rare is capable of delivering on a good game, and Sea of Thieves looks pretty cool, but I just can't do MMOs, or even multiplayer focused games. I'm finishing Splatoon single player right now and as fun as it is, I can't see myself jumping into the multiplayer all that much because I just don't have the time anymore.

Here's hoping Sea of Thieves does well (as well as Yooka Laylee, to prove that there is still demand for 3D collectathon platformers) and Rare is able to finally make Banjo Threeie during the next couple of years!

Whose everyone? As hard as it might be to swallow, a game like Banjo would be a very difficult sell to children, especially on the Xbox. Like it or not, that would be the target demographic, not adults. It was the target demographic the day the original came out and still would be. 3D platformers aren't very popular anymore. As much as I'd like to see a new Banjo game, it's not surprising to see year after year no dice.

3D platformers aren't very popular anymore the same way and for the same reason T-Rex steaks are not popular anymore.

I remember the days when rare had competing barns churning out increasingly amazing games. A new ip is wonderful, a new ip in addition to a new Banjo would have been amazing.

They have been hyping the return of rare for ages, this doesn't feel like it. At all.

But this screams like the type of game that's going to bomb. Fable Legends too. It's incredibly difficult to find success within the multiplayer oriented sphere of gaming.

But Destiny succeeded at $RRP with little content.

That said I wonder if Sea of Thieves is F2P like Fable Legends.

How does making a good MMO prove they can do a new single player game? The design philosophies are completely different.

Core game was my keyword here. Would you rather have them go straight from Kinect Sport Rivals to Banjo Threeie? Kinect Sports is multiple motion mini-games put together, while this will be one large multiplayer game with probably a story.

Kinect Sports is sort of the only Rare created game on Xbox that didn't bomb. Viva Piñata did good, but not Kinect Sports good.

Can't really say for Sea of Thieves since I don't know the pay model, but Fable: Legends being F2P makes me doubt it will be a "bomb". That's really the trick for making a successful multiplayer focused game nowadays and the console market is starving for F2P games. Neverwinter for example is apparently doing really well and it's not like it's amazing or anything. Warframe is doing really good as well on all platforms. Pretty sure Happy Wars did really good on 360 as well.

I was disappointed in that. Hate anything Pirates. It's the reason i haven't bothered with AC lately. Also don't care for MMOs. Oh well.

It just looked like some ideas thrown around. Properly only a very early test-version of the game with just a basic idea, what the game should look like in the end. A very big disappointment for people, who expect more from Rare.

If this really turns out to be a fully fleshed out Pirate MMO then I'll be hyped as fuck. Commanding a ship with my friends and taking on other ships is going to be great but it's also going to need a loot system and town, ports ect ect

Looking forward to seeing more.

Rumor is they have 3 teams now, so I wouldn't give up hope yet.

I think it feels like a return to form. The Rare Replay collection is a huge value and Sea of Thieves looks promising to me.

Same boat

I don't understand why rare isn't making a game people wants, who's idea was it to make a mmo?

They've been wanting to make a MMO for ages, since the early days of the acquisition.

I think Rare should make what they want instead of being forced to do things.

Didn't like it. The water looked great (if real) but I have no interest trying this game. A pirate MMO? Seriously? Screw Banjo and Conker, let's make a pirate MMO!

This game's going to flop which will once again re-assure the suits at Microsoft that RARE should be making the games the suits want rather than what fans want

Too bad Kampfheld was already banned, I'd like to have a word.

Then quite frankly your missing out on the best AC game in ages. Black Flag was superb and this looks like a refreshing style of MMO.

This can't be the only thing that Rare is working on, right? How many teams do they have? Maybe a new Banjo or Battletoads is being made by a different team?

And who is handling Rare Replay? Is it Rare themselves, or some other studio?

Looks kind of bland to me at first look.

I think AC4:Black Flag has ruined all other pirate/naval combat for me.

I mean, it's early so perhaps Sea of Thieves will have a lot of depth and cool ship vs. ship combat, because all I really care about is ship vs. ship combat in a pirating game.

The walking around the island stuff was really dull and pointless.

I hope this game focuses primarily on ship vs. ship combat and customization, Big naval battles and the like. That's what I would want.

I'm dead tired of running around doing fetch quests and dungeons and raids in MMOs.
Please make this game different! Keep the focus AT SEA!

People aren't down on the game because it isn't Banjo

people are down on the game because it doesn't look fun, and on top of that, terribly bland character design

Yeah. As of now Rare is still a C tier studio.

Which is why I want them to build themselves with this game and then go hard in when they are more ready. This is a game that they can do anything they want to do, they are not restricted by the past.

I think this looks great. Loved Black Flag

Don't think it is an MMO though -- they said shared world adventure or something which makes me think it is more like watchdogs? Would love to be wrong though

Probably more like Destiny which is also self described as "shared world". Just on a purely multiplayer point of view though. Not necessarily the level up/stat/loot systems.

This game looks great! It looks like a rare game and I'm so happy to see them doing something new, wel get our banjo fix in that amazing collection and yooka laylee, this was my favorite new ip announcment there : )

Its an MMO or just a MP focused game?
If its an MMO, then I'm out. If its a MP focused, maybe I'm in. I havent seen the gameplay yet, but Rare + Pirates may be cool!
