Sony is officially helping with funding and development with Shenmue 3

This practice just rubs me the wrong way entirely - I think it's the first time a Kickstarter has been created with the developers KNOWING they have direct financial support from a multinational corporation?

Adam Boyes: "We have nothing to do with this!!!"

Shady.

Such a shame too, I love Shenmue and Yu Suzuki.

Bloodstained, just a few weeks/months back.

Granted, they did disclose it.

Granted, I sort of figured that was what would happen in this case.

Come on man, Boyes is always a guy who gives jokes and takes it light on stage. You must know, in as much as the Shenmue series is loved by many it didn't exactly light the sales world on fire with it's humongous budget on the dreamcast. If anything, I hope this 2 million+ can also finance Shenmue 1+2 HD. In any case, don't all the people who gave $30.00 + get the game for free.....You really need to go check Shenmue's budget, 2 million was never going to cut it, so I'd say BOYES gave a sarcastic hint if anything.

How is it free money when the fans get the game?
Yeah because they're only donating $60, huh? Do you think that guy paying $10,000 for a jacket is in the same level too? They're abusing the fans' goodwill to partially fund the game, remove all the risks without losing any of the advantages, like the exclusivity deal. I don't give a shit if people actually are willing to do it regardless of that, I'm not judging them, I'm only judging Sony.

I'm so happy this isn't coming to the other console. Like I said many times before, the more PlayStation 4 exclusives, the better.

This is not a good look.

However, can somebody explain the complaints over the use of Kickstarter?

This better mean physical release for PS4.

I wonder if this will be a case of PS4 gets the game first and PC later. But it would be a slap in the face to the PC backers i would think.

I'm just saying, let's stop being disingenuous. If Sony JUST wanted to gauge interest, then that experiment is over. The interest is there. Cancel the kickstarter.

But Sony also wants the money from the people so they can spend less. Money that they possess as of this very moment themselves to use.

(For the record, before someone calls me out, I hold this opinion with every Kickstarter that goes for external funding, not just this one)

But the people is going to get what they paid for. Do you really think they are sad about this more than obvious 'news'?

If you could not figure that out by them giving Yu the platform at the biggest game trade show in the world... then that is on those people, not Sony.

No company is fully transparent, and never will be. Competition.

Yeah, no. It's kind of on Sony.

I felt genuinely sorry for the poor old guy when they brought him on stage to do his "Brother, can you spare a dime" thing.

- publisher

- not limiting anything

- allegedly no deal before kickstarter

sony:

- platform holder

- makin it console exclusive to theirs, thus;

- deal before kickstarter; denies it on stage

Not necessarily. They may have made a bid prior, but a more generous offer after the Kickstarter blew up and they saw the interest was big enough.

Or maybe MS didn't care enough to be competitive about it.

We wouldn't be getting this at all otherwise.

Gio Corsi quote:

"Absolutely. First off, Shenmue III was the number one ask on the whole #BuildingTheList campaign, so when that first started, right off the bat, 'Shenmue III, Shenmue III, Shenmue III.' So this has been an ask for as long as I've been at PlayStation. And we met with Suzuki-san at GDC last year and we started the long road to try and figure out how we were going to get this whole thing made.

"We said, 'the only way this is going to happen is if fans speak up,' and we thought Kickstarter was the perfect place to do this. So we set a goal for $2 million and if the fans come in and back it, then absolutely, we're going to make this a reality. So, Sony and PlayStation are definitely a partner in this game, and it's going to be run through Third Party Productions with Ys Net. We're going to get the game done. We're going to be partners the whole way, and we're really excited to see this thing come out in a couple of years."

For me personally, I don't care, Shenmue 3 is happening and that's all I need.

How could anybody construe my post as sarcasm?

Excuse me for showing a little concern about the integrity of the Kickstarter platform.

The integrity of the platform LOL. What do you guys contribute to these games for? If it's to get the damn thing funded that's all you should care about. Is it ownership, a keychain why do you care

That's pretty underhanded in my opinion. KS should be for games that genuinely struggle to receive funding, not to gauge interest in a game before a publisher commits to a project.

Yes, over the past 15 years Yu Suzuki has been defending himself from all the numerous offers to develop Shenmue III. They were just too good. It was only until Kickstarter came to be Suzuki & co wanted to create Shenmue III as they wanted to exploit the fans.

#cancelshenemue

I think I was pretty reasonable with my argument. If you read my posts in the Salsa thread, you should know I was happy for having Shenmue 3 either way, and I still am. I just think that KS should be about making things happen that otherwise wouldn't, and not allowing major companies to ask people for money to check market viability, while coming forward with the info that they're funding the game one day later. Then again, this is just my opinion, and KS should be whatever it wants or it can be, as it's a great tool most of the time.

And I never had an Xbox in my life, lol.

At the end of the day we have Sony looking at a list of the most requested games by fans worldwide and doing what they can to make each one of them happen, regardless of how improbable.

Whatever it takes to achieve these goals is fine by me and considering their pedigree, their involvement in any/all of these titles does not concern me in the slightest, in fact it is even more reason to be hyped.

I don't know if another PS2 is possible but if it is, Sony are doing all the right things to make the PS4 hit that level.

The only question for me is, what's next on the list? I'm hoping Crash..

Sony's deal is probably something along the lines of "However much you raise on Kickstarter, we'll double or triple it and that's your development budget."

since sony is now supporting them, wouldnt that make this problem non existent?.

Think long term instead of short term.

It doesn't matter if Sony is a company so big we could trust them to be less likely to not cancel development midway through. All that matters is that governments are creating an environment were money can be potentially wasted on failed projects with most of the penalty applying to those who donated. All of the biggest publishers have cancelled projects in the past. The PR risk makes this less likely but they shouldn't be able to feel like they can legally get away with this.

On top of that people who start crowdfunding are more likely to funding smaller projects and is with them were the risk of failed projects without recourse is much higher.

Besides the point entirely.

Jesus.

That's the only point in my eyes. The game is being made.

I'm just saying, let's stop being disingenuous. If Sony JUST wanted to gauge interest, then that experiment is over. The interest is there. Cancel the kickstarter.

So you want the kickstarter cancelled so that backers have to pay more for the final game? (I am making the assumption the retail release will be >$30) Putting even more money into Sony's greedy pockets.

No. It was pretty obvious Sony were going to chip in since the original's budget was 25 times higher in 1999. I just think they should have been upfront about it instead of going all #saveshenmue (literally). Just say that reaching the goal will show Sony that there is interest for the game instead of making it look like they are funding the game.

This Kickstarter did (literally) save Shenmue though. It wouldn't have been made without it.

Well this makes sense.

Not familiar with the series so a remaster of the first two would be most welcome while you're at it.

Well there goes any hope for an Xbox version. Shame really since that's where the game started out.

What? Shenmue did not start on Xbox. Wtf.

Buahaha, right?

It only ended up on there as a selling point for Moore to land a job with MSFT after he was apart of the SEGA during the Dreamcast tanking.

And sadly it would have made money more than likely on the PS2 compared to OG Xbox.

Sony should remaster the first two games in 1080p/60fps, put them on PSN and say all profits made from the sale of the games will go directly into development of Shenmue III.

Some people being intentionally dense in here.

I agree here.

The fact that some people feel they should close it for fans who's already reserved their copy
For fans who get once in a lifetime opportunities
For fans who wanted to be apart of this just because of some funding is selfish AF.

I have never played Shenmue in my life but I can totally understand why some put money towards this project and I'm okay with this entirely.
