Shenmue is a well known financial failure. They needed to know if there was enough interest so they wouldn't get burned.
This practice just rubs me the wrong way entirely - I think it's the first time a Kickstarter has been created with the developers KNOWING they have direct financial support from a multinational corporation?
Adam Boyes: "We have nothing to do with this!!!"
Shady.
Such a shame too, I love Shenmue and Yu Suzuki.
Come on man, Boyes is always a guy who gives jokes and takes it light on stage. You must know, in as much as the Shenmue series is loved by many it didn't exactly light the sales world on fire with it's humongous budget on the dreamcast. If anything, I hope this 2 million+ can also finance Shenmue 1+2 HD. In any case, don't all the people who gave $30.00 + get the game for free.....You really need to go check Shenmue's budget, 2 million was never going to cut it, so I'd say BOYES gave a sarcastic hint if anything. This practice just rubs me the wrong way entirely - I think it's the first time a Kickstarter has been created with the developers KNOWING they have direct financial support from a multinational corporation?

Well there goes any hope for an Xbox version. Shame really since that's where the game started out.
Now, if Shining Force IV happened, I'd be even happier.
Yeah because they're only donating $60, huh? Do you think that guy paying $10,000 for a jacket is in the same level too? They're abusing the fans' goodwill to partially fund the game, remove all the risks without losing any of the advantages, like the exclusivity deal. I don't give a shit if people actually are willing to do it regardless of that, I'm not judging them, I'm only judging Sony. How is it free money when the fans get the game?
You might want to see this game called star citizen.
What? Shenmue did not start on Xbox. Wtf.Well there goes any hope for an Xbox version. Shame really since that's where the game started out.
Hahaha, stop accepting funding. You can't be serious.
Crowd-funding as marketing hype machine.

Complain away.
We still get Shenmue 3.
I'm so happy this isn't coming to the other console. Like I said many times before, the more PlayStation 4 exclusives, the better.

I'm just saying, let's stop being disingenuous. If Sony JUST wanted to gauge interest, then that experiment is over. The interest is there. Cancel the kickstarter.
But Sony also wants the money from the people so they can spend less. Money that they possess as of this very moment themselves to use.
(For the record, before someone calls me out, I hold this opinion with every Kickstarter that goes for external funding, not just this one)
If you could not figure that out by them giving Yu the platform at the biggest game trade show in the world... then that is on those people, not Sony.
No company is fully transparent, and never will be. Competition.
why?.I am sure there are people who prefer buy it digital at 29 dollars than physical at 59.I agree with all that. They should definitely close it
deep silver:
- publisher
- not limiting anything
- allegedly no deal before kickstarter
sony:
- platform holder
- makin it console exclusive to theirs, thus;
- deal before kickstarter; denies it on stage
don't be sorry,
Just curious did you have the expression on your face matching you avatar because of all the cheap melodrama going on?

How could anybody construe my post as sarcasm?
Excuse me for showing a little concern about the integrity of the Kickstarter platform.
This is not a good look.
However, can somebody explain the complaints over the use of Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is serving exactly it's stated purpose: Kick-starting this project.

That's pretty underhanded in my opinion. KS should be for games that genuinely struggle to receive funding, not to gauge interest in a game before a publisher commits to a project.
Well there goes any hope for an Xbox version. Shame really since that's where the game started out.
What? Shenmue did not start on Xbox. Wtf.
I'm pretty sure that's not particularly accurate.Well there goes any hope for an Xbox version. Shame really since that's where the game started out.
I think I was pretty reasonable with my argument. If you read my posts in the Salsa thread, you should know I was happy for having Shenmue 3 either way, and I still am. I just think that KS should be about making things happen that otherwise wouldn't, and not allowing major companies to ask people for money to check market viability, while coming forward with the info that they're funding the game one day later. Then again, this is just my opinion, and KS should be whatever it wants or it can be, as it's a great tool most of the time.
And I never had an Xbox in my life, lol.
since sony is now supporting them, wouldnt that make this problem non existent?.
Besides the point entirely.
Jesus.

No. It was pretty obvious Sony were going to chip in since the original's budget was 25 times higher in 1999. I just think they should have been upfront about it instead of going all #saveshenmue (literally). Just say that reaching the goal will show Sony that there is interest for the game instead of making it look like they are funding the game.
It makes sense for Sony since they have no risk on the front end. Look for this to happen more with older franchises.
Well there goes any hope for an Xbox version. Shame really since that's where the game started out.

So you care about this because...?
Some people being intentionally dense in here.
