.. That was the Morpheus demo I had today.

She got pretty close at times.. I'm like " remember they can see what you're seeing " LOL

This BETTER become a full game and get released in the EU..

How was it? The sound, atmosphere. How "real" did the world feel..? Can't wait for the impressions to start flooding in.

This looks fucking sublime. That visual style and sound is directly hitting the right notes in my brain. This part in particular make me drool.

Aesthetically, this VR version of SUPERHYPERCUBE is influenced by our love for all things glowing, epitomized by neon light, 80s motion graphics, early computer art and the minimalist art movement known as “light and space”.

Can't wait to try this, these are the kind of abstract surreal ass experiences I want in VR.

Yea that trailer really did a great job selling the effect of filling your entire field of vision, and playing with that idea.

I knew what I was seeing wasn't real. But the times where she came closer it felt like someone was invading my personal space. It's really the highest praise I can give.

That said, the graphics doesn't look in VR the way it does on the video , if that makes sense.

Does anyone have a screenshot of the tiny bit they showed from The Deep during the Sony conference? I'm pretty sure they updated the graphics in it but it was only shown for a few seconds and I can't find any pictures of it.

Also, Godling has "gaze-based" navigation? Does that mean Morpheus has eye-tracking after all or what do they mean by "gaze-based"?

You didn't happen to ask what happen to the Japanese girl they initially showed, did you?
I'd like to know if the game is about 1 person or if there are multiple characters.

By gaze based I assume they mean moving in the direction your head is turned, or something. There was a prototype of Morpheus last GDC I believe with eye tracking built in but I haven't heard anything since.

We go hands on with Project Morpheus exclusive multiplayer mech combat game by Guerilla Games Cambridge, Rigs: Mechanized Combat League. By far the best looking VR game on Morpheus right now.

For the type of game this is, I'm really quite impressed.

Rigs is a multiplayer mech combat game that pits you and two other teammates against a rival faction. The aim of the game? To destroy your opponents, collect dropped orbs of energy and score points by dropping through a central ‘goal’.

You’re dropped into your mech, taking control in first person while you hunt down your enemies with your choice of weapons; lasers, rockets or plasma cannons. Your robot is also equipped with the ability to power jump several stories in order to gain vertical advantage and traverse the tight and twisting map, built around the aforementioned goal atop the arena.

I'm surprised at the gameplay involved, I didn't see this happening so soon in VR.

The control scene was interesting and it’s the only area of Rigs where I remain as yet unsold. Most of the input duty falls to the Dual Shock controller but moving your head, your primary means of aiming implements the ‘weight’ of the unit your piloting, that is there’s a slight intentional lag in your aiming. This isn’t really a problem, it just takes a little getting used to. Ultimately it sells the feeling of piloting a massive robot and adds depth to the gameplay, without more extensive playtesting it’s impossible to say for sure though.

Interesting, similar idea with the street luge demo, but instead with a robot in an fps arena. I'm curious how that 'weighted' effect feels, but it seems like a very clever idea.

Greg and Colin in the KIndaFunny stream yesterday were pretty negativ about Morpheus. They thought its pretty much dead because Sony didn't give it much attention at the show.
Greg at one point said he wished that they had announced that every game they showed so far will be playable on Morpheus, too. They also thought Microsoft is able to compete with Morpheus because of their deal with Oculus.

This shows how little people understand what VR actually is.
It should be obvious that you can show of Morpheus on stage. VR banks on the fact that its so awesome that the few people who actually tried it spread the word and people try it at their friends house and are immediately convinced.
I don't know whether or not VR is really going to be that awesome that this approach works, but thats the way Sony, Valve and Oculus are doing it. We won't see stage shows where they us VR trailers. It just doesn't work that way.

Another common mistake is that people think you can just port normal games over to VR.Thats not how its done. VR is a completely different from normal gaming on a screen or gaming on a 3D screen. We need different inputs, different gameplay mechanics, different movement and camera, different leveldesign and different etc.
Sure there will be some ports, but they will all feel weird. The games developed exclusively for VR are where its at.

And last but not least: the Microsoft-Oculus partnershit has nothing to do with the VR everybody is talking about.
VR is about putting you IN the game world. Oculus on Xbox will just put you in a virtual room where you play your usual games on a virtual screen.
This has nothing to do with what Sony is trying do with Morpheus.

Needed to be quoted for how spot on it was!!

I was also watching KindaFunny's stream and honestly thought both Greg and Colin sounded like complete fucking idiots when they had this discussion. 3 min of Morpheus stage time lead them to a gloom/doom scenario where Sony was losing faith in Morpheus and they probably changed their strategy because of the MS/Oculus Rift partnership. WTF? I don't even know how an intelligent person could possible come to this conclusion knowing that VR doesn't show well on stage AND Sony had 3/4's of their floor space dedicated to it. Then add the Oculus conversation which is Apples and Oranges when comparing PS4 to Xbox One. Morpheus is built for VR gaming experiences to be played on PS4. Oculus is built for those experiences ON A PC using windows 10, NOT THE XBONE. Yes you can stream Xbone games to a virtual theater but that is not VR like Morpheus is and to make it better YOU NEED A PC TO DO IT. This may change or it may not, but as we stand now even having the above conversation comparing the 2 is ignorant. I was actually embarrassed for both Colin and Greg.

And don't even get me fucking started on HoloLens comparisons to Morpheus (SPOILER - It's the same as above)

a little bummed about the videos i'm seeing coming back from E3. I was really hoping that Sony wouldn't go in the hyper realistic direction to push Morpheus. First person shooters and traditional action games don't really show off what seems best about the tech for me.

Stuff like Minecraft, PT, Journey, No Man's Sky, Abzu...that's the stuff that would make VR really shine. I don't want on-rails experiences. Don't want fast paced gun play. VR is all about exploration and immersion. I don't get why Sony went away from the nearly 1:1 feel of the motion controls/slower paced games of last year to the dual shock stuff they're showing this year.

Gotta love the word "hyper-realistic".

How can something be more real than real?
It's not about being 'more real'. It's about taking reality and then sort of dramatically enhancing it in various ways. Reality has great resolution(if you've got good eyesight), but it's also limited by physics and other unfortunate natural laws and occurences. Photographers often spend hours waiting to get the lighting just right for a shoot, for instance. In a rendered environment, this is of no concern whatsoever. You can simply *create* your preferred lighting stage. But when the rules of nature don't apply, you can go further. Hell, even a lot of photography, especially a lot of HDR photography, already kind of goes for a hyperrealistic take on things, creating art that is different and often more vivid or dramatic than what your eyes would take in if seeing something naturally.

Nice. New girl looks great too. Needs to come out. Glad they put out that English trailer, seems way more likely they're really doing it.

How is the resolution and screendoor effect on these displays? The only time I ever put on a VR headset was an older Oculus build at a tech event. It was basically a roller coeaster ride. The low res screen was so bad I had to take it off cause it was making my eyes water.

Higher pixel fill, higher subpixel resolution, higher pixel resolution, better optics/lenses, higher refresh rate, lower latency, low persistence display = Almost like night and day difference.

Awesome. I'd love to try the newer displays.

I was also shocked that it had so little screen time. They haven't even talked about any progress they most certainly made iirc and I really expected some news regarding launch
How can you they haven't talked about any progress? When all year that's what we have been hearing about.
Has the competition given price and launch date?

Do we know if Project Morpheus will be the final brand name?

No idea yet. I like Morpheus but that's just because we've all got used to it. It's still a strange name to give it as far as the masses are concerned, but then so is Oculus Rift. I hope they don't go with the obvious and just call it PSVR, partly cos it's too similar to PSVita, but mostly because it's incredibly unimaginative. Also Morpheus rolls off the tongue in a way that something like PlayStation VR does not.

I hope they they stick with Morpheus or else come up with something creative that encapsulates what Morpheus can do, something that can be used as a verb so people can talk about it in terms of "I'm gonna *******". No one really has a word yet for entering VR, and it's something we need a verb for. The VR equivalent of hoover. For instance let's just say they called it "Jump". Then when talking of donning their VR headset people can just call it jumping. Obviously NOT jump cos that's crap but they need to create a name that owns the space. Nobody's going to say "I'm going to Oculus" or "I'm going to Vive".

Ideas?

do the graphics look "worse" in the actual demo or do you mean something else?

Some of the things there are quiet reassuring in term of graphics. It should really be fine with stylized aesthetics.

Yes. Resolution in VR is somewhat low right now. Remember that a huge portion of your field of view needs to be filled here. 1080p in VR is not like 1080p in your living room.

I don't know if that's what the poster was trying to say, though.
