Dirty Bomb open beta thread

Phantom twerks seem fair enough but I still think a slight speed nerf might be in order.

Hopefully this will recover the tanking player base, the game has lost almost 1k players since the release of phantom.
Though I imagine they might need to reassess the monotisation before it will begin to grow again.
Yeah, Phantom nerfs might bring back some people but I think the monotisation is the bigger part of why some are dropping this game.

Monetization problems?

Monetization problems?
Classes being $10, Elite cases costing $5 each. Now the cases wouldn't be too bad if they were $2 or came in class picks (ex. Precision case, Explosive case, Deployable case, etc.) but as it stands the cases imo aren't worth it. You could potentially get a card for a class that you don't own which would then force you to spend $10 to buy it. Personally, I think a lot people would come back to the game if the classes weren't so insanely expensive.

They increased the topKEK spread by 7% (which is fair) but also increased the Crotzni's by 10%.

My head is full of fuck.

Probably cause while the kek10 was better by a margin on bushwhacker, the crotzni was better by a margin on sawbonez and nader.

I felt like the smg9 could use a small buff while the kek10 could use a tiny nerf, but there data probably supports the changes they made.

edit:
Also, on second thought these changes could make the smg9 more appealing to use. If they think the smg9 is a balanced gun already, these small nerfs could make it more attractive. If the amount of use doesn't change then they might buff the smg9 directly. You are right in that the larger nerf to crotzni does seem a little odd. But I think it might be because bushwhacker doesn't have access to the crotzni? Or does he? That isn't a merc I especially like to play often.

Huh? I have almost every merc unlocked but I play the default one all the time because skyhammer can kill and deal with everyone, including phantom

That's nice, but my point is: The grind to get classes to answer certain classes or even try the cards you get from classes you don't have is too damn high. 12 hours for Phantom 6-8 for 30K characters during "double credit weekend." I can't even IMAGINE how long it takes to unlock a class with the normal rate.

I understand why they need the grind (to force people to buy an unlock) but it's absolutely insanity.

But elite cases are completely worthless apart from cooler looking skins. Sure, might be a bit pricey but you don't ever need to buy one if you don't want to.

Now classes could definitely be cheaper, but you do have the option for the 3-packs for 50% off in the store if you want. Pretty good deal if you don't own any in the pack and want them. Not the best way to go about it, but better than being forced to buy them all at full price.

The point is to incentivize people to pay money, because the game is free. At least this way, no one is paywalled out of anything. At least this game isn't like Battlefield where you have to pay for the base game then grind out weapons.

I've bought two Mercs and have enough cash for a third, after about 40 hrs of game time. It's pretty much on the edge of wanting to buy vs. being fine with just playing and unlocking normally.

I am at odds with how you are implying that the default stuff can't compete and is extremely gimped.

Basically you read it as you saying that BF progression is fine because of default stuff. I feel that is the same here. And certainly the default stuff is not extremely gimped.

You're appear to be arguing that there are straight upgrades or otherwise vertical progression, whereas in my opinion the game is largely horizontal progression. Paying to skip time in a horizontal progression system is very fair even to people who earn the stuff by grinding. Which makes this system acceptable, whereas a vertical progression would be less so.

Yep. Then to get cards as well? Well fuck off, I can play other games which respect my time.

My impressions on the new update are pretty good. The 4 seconds increase on cooldown with phantom means you have to use that ability much smarter and less all the time. The heavy melee rotation change does make it harder to hit, especially with knives. But that is fine imo, because they deal a lot of damage. It will take some time adjusting to that before I conclude whether or not they tightened it too much, but right now I think it could be loosened a little bit as it feels awkward. I haven't played against a phantom yet, but playing as one it doesn't feel gimped with either the crotzni or kek10 which is good.

Removed 'Win X Matches' missions as they were incentivizing unbalanced matches
Very good

Added new missions for Competitive Matches, the Execution Game Mode and Secondary Objectives
Updated Merc missions to be based around earning the appropriate XP type instead of playing 'X' matches
So far I've seen completing secondary objectives and earning XP with specific character in squad. Both seem fine.

Updated Skyhammer's Airstrike explosion effects
I thought this was noticeable.

How dare they give you a reason to spend money on a f2p, that is still fair towards people who don't spend anything.

I also think this notion that they are disrespecting your time, while you play their game for free, is absurd.

The Katana's stab is really weird now. It feels like my mouse is getting caught on something. Same with the EMP and other melee weapons. I think they should find a middle ground between this and beyblading.

I'll break this out in to a bigger post because I'm cooking tomorrows lunch (lemon chicken and brown rice encase you were wondering).

I have two real thoughts about the monetization of Dirty Bomb. It's going to be a ramble as I'm awful at these posts, it isn't gospel and all of these are my experiences and thoughts; it's probably going to sound antagonistic because I've had a day of having to be a sycophant to whiny clients all day. - don't loose your shit.

Dirty Bomb exists in a world where TF2, CS:GO and BF4 are out and have been for literally years. Oh and Overwatch, that will no doubt cannibalize TF2 and Dirty Bomb but that's another story for the end of the year. All of which have incredible amounts of content to the game for either a small fee (CS:GO) or free of charge (TF2). When you launch a game you're asking someone to put down all the purchased content from another game to put time in to yours. When you ask me to spend either real world money (and lots of it) or literally tens of hours of my time to reach the perceived value I already have in these other games. Yes, you are wasting my time. At any point I can go in to TF2, I have 8 classes and enough guns and play styles to last me hundreds of hours.

My other thought is the Red Tide: The Russians. Russians are three things: Abusive, poor and many. They grew Dota 2 like rabbits on cocaine, having played Dota 2 from when it was 300 players and I was getting stomped by fnatic. You went from 5 minute queues to 5 seconds in a couple of weeks. But they are incredibly poor, a developing nation it maybe but the teenagers don't have £8-10 to spend on a character. They stimulated growth in the market (gaining drops, putting them in the market, valve taking a cut) and brought in more players, with that, potential spenders or talent to make community items putting more in to the pot and building good will. Valve even dropped the price of cosmetic sets from £8 to £2 as an experiment shortly after the Russian expansion. The prices have gone up £1 but haven't risen to their pre-Russian prices. No doubt what they lost in the price they made up in sheer volume.

The crux of my problem in Dirty Bomb is essentially you're asking someone to make a 'purchase' twice once in the form of buying the character, then in the form of buying a card, this is what gets my goat. I don't want to have to save 76k credits or £9.74 to get where I want to be. I can go in to Dota 2 and have 100+ heroes off the bat for the price of nothing, 8 classes in TF2 with weapon drops or buy CS:GO for £6, less than the price of a character and have a full game. Post edit super ramble: I forgot to add if I have to ask one of the developers how the hell to get the most out of your monetisation because it's so obtuse: you dun fucked up.

Edit: Well, at least there is ignore. -- Never change Internet.

All valid points but the thing in Dirty Bombs favour is that, to my knowledge at least, there is nothing that plays quite like it. Paid for or F2P in recent years. Now I'm not claiming to be some all seeing eye so if there is one please tell me but it seems to be something Splash Damage specifically do with their style of gameplay. That's why I think it will keep players coming back regardless of monetisation as the core game is pretty damn good.

Plus I'm using characters like Fragger with their core loadouts and thankfully I don't feel underpowered or at a disadvantage. I must admit though I wish the characters were easier to get but I guess with those and the loadouts being their main source of money they are still finding their way.

I am REALLY lookin forward to Overwatch, loving the videos for it.

That is crucially what annoys me the most. It occupies a space between TF2 and Quake which isn't filled,
which potentially Overwatch can also fill
. But I don't want to feel like I have to spend £10, £20 or wait weeks to try the classes that I may enjoy. This just sours my mood and I go off to play TF2 instead.

Nice super edit. Funny how your post went from 1 snarky line to 5 paragraphs an hour after it was originally posted and yet you only have one line that is marked as an edit. To be fair, I did ignore you but saw you had edited your post from the quoted post from above, so I'll read it. But don't act like your post was worth anything by a edit and then being dishonest about your edit.

I'll post the reply here when I get around to considering what you said completely:

---
You say it takes 76k credits to get a merc and a card. But that is not quite accurate. It is accurate if you want to purchase the exact card. But you really don't need to since you're going to be getting a lot of cases all the time. And you can trade up the cards for the mercs you don't have or don't want to get the cards for mercs you do want, at much less cost than 16-17k credits you need for the bronze card purchase direct from store.

I don't mind people having a problem with the amount of time it takes. But to say they are disrespecting your time and to "fuck off" is, at least in my opinion, really arrogant and off putting. You can choose to not play their game, that is fine. But being disrespectful at the same time is a very poor attitude.

I can't tell whether I just analyse things well, people are stupid, or it really is a convulted card system.

I took one look at that system and had a general idea what was happening, especially after I upgraded my first card and saw they gained a perk.

I do agree that Valve does F2P right, but they are also in a very unique situation where they can afford not charging for a lot of stuff in the games. If they give you a game where you don't need to pay anything, people will play it. People playing it means that they are also exposed to Steam and its sales which will most likely make a lot of people spend money on the store. They just don't need to charge for stuff these smaller companies do just to keep the games profitable.

Oh totally, but trying to find a company to compare to is difficult: Blizzard is Blizzard, Riot has the Chinese backing money and the closest is S2 but they are basically a footnote at this point. Once you get in to the semantics of arguing about which is the right and wrong comparison we go in to a danger of drifting in to your typical shitty GAF discussion. D:

You know I did as well, but then I noticed you could buy bronze cards. Which made me say: 'Why the hell would I gamble?'

It's not like I get a chance at a super spunky gold African Warlord AK47 or a poorly camoed AK47 if I'm not lucky. I can take out the element of chance and potentially rolling 17 times for trash (see Angry Joes video), it's like they are admitting this came before but they have no idea what to replace it with and simply left the feature in, complete with house-always-wins chances.

Ungh, they nerfed ALL melee -not just Phantom. Now melee attacks for all mercs are straight useless. You stop turning when you melee. It's impossible to melee the light classes at all now.

Someone on reddit is saying that running with a pistol and some smgs out is faster than with the cricket bat and katana.

Phantom is now no longer OP, but I would have like to see how he did with the other changes before they nerfed melee wholesale.

I'm expecting Phantom buffs in other departments later on, he's really garbage now, probably the worst merc in the game. Literally Sawbonez level of combat ability as a pickoff class

Also, on the games monatization; it really is garbage as well. While luckily you can play around it to certain extent (I think if you really want to play this seriously, the starter pack is a must) the problem is that every real cash option they offer are not worth it for the value they offer

The worst offenders are the XP boosts, which are hilariously the worst option in terms of credits to dollars/euros ratio. Since credit income is always 12 per 1 min of ingame time, a 3 euro booster gives you around 4k credits. For the same 3 euros you can buy a bronze card worth 17.5k credits. Kinda insulting, actually
The loadout system, the storefront, the individual merc prices; everything is a convoluted mess and is steeply priced. While it doesn't affect gameplay, it all needs a rework anyhow.

^
I think Phantom is still very good. I think they are going to loosen up melee a little bit and make it easier to control. I don't think the hp nerf is a big deal personally. The cooldown increase is the biggest nerf that'll probably stay (I felt like 8s, up from 6s was enough myself). I think people will see phantom being a lot weaker but really they were just over-valuing how good he was from the start imho. The easier to see visual sprucing was necessary though, so that is one other thing that will make people conclude he is much weaker now rather than just a moderately weaker.

I still doubt phantom will be a driving force in competitive. Maybe a niche pick on a couple map sections. One thing that hurts its use in a competitive setting is because merc selection is always transparent and there is little room for surprise, at least a reliable surprise. Phantom could be chosen if you could blind side, but good players will know it is present before that happens most of the time.

Had a blast playing it tonight.
I wanted to play it badly since it was in alpha but my old potato couldn't handle it.

If anyone here is playing it at 25 fps and doing well and enjoying themselves kudos to you you as you have a better brain than me:p

The game seems to have had some balance changes since I last tried it , I feel like time to kill is higher (good) than last time I played but I could be imagining it.
I didn't feel the need to scurry behind a wall the second I got hit and always felt like I had a good fighting chance 1v2 or when getting shot from the side or back.
Low TTK ruins that aspect of multiplayer shooters I'm glad it's not like this here. It would have been an instant dealbreaker for me.

I don't know if I have it in me to do go along with the free2play system though.
I'm completely spent on the time consuming LoL/world of tanks type f2p grinds as they require a huge time investment to get access to the whole game.

I was able to do it once (world of tanks) as it was the first time I saw such a system but have since then bounced right off of games like war thunder/wo warships/hots etc. (despite them having incredibly good gameplay)

Got so many good games to play these days I just don't want to commit to one game like that anymore just to unlock the content.
Sadly there doesn't seem to be any 'spend 30 bucks and get the whole game' type of option here either.

At least smite has the godpack thing.

Pretty cool, gonna try some of that Phantom and Vassili then that I don't feel I want to drop credits on.

Got 50K saved up, would go for Nader but if Red Eye is added next week I'll grab him instead.

What's better for Rhino? The faster acceleration or longer time before overheating? I'm thinking of getting him or Nader as my next merc.

The quick switch affects how quick you can switch from your weapons to your minigun so if you prefer hit&run I'd take that. The longer time before overheating doesn't seem very appealing to me considering that unless you wanna damage a structure you'll rarely fire your minigun till it overheats, its accuracy is just garbage after a few seconds so you'll wana stop firing. The Ahnuld is good though.

im pretty sure the acceleration loadout also has unshakable (the explosive resistance perk) on it, which is a godlike tier perk for Rhino since moving out of the way of explosives isnt exactly his strongest point

Probably less complaints because a lot of people just stopped playing the game.

Yeah player base has almost halved in a month.

Phantom is kinda useless atm, so not sure why anybody would moan except for having teammates being useless by playing as him.

Yeah, he was pretty mediocre before the nerf as well. I don't mind some of the changes like the cooldown nerf and making seeing him more consistent against different backdrops though.

I used SMGs and melee a lot, and they fucked with both of those recently :\

Game feels less responsive and therefore less fun now.

Also I've been noticing more cheaters lately. A month ago not at all, but I haven't played in a week but was getting cheaters every few matches.
