the splatoon apologists are one of the worst, "i dont want you to have a preferred control option that you could be better at because i personally do not think you will be better at it" lol what? how is that a good reason?

Yeah, I mean, no one is saying the game is bad and I'm not going to stop playing it because of the lack of those options. I just don't think it'd be that hard to implement, and the idea of a "disadvantage" is overblown. But whatever.

the local multiplayer mode is completely different from anything found online to accommodate for the pro controller

Don't games like Monster Hunter have this set up option?

Shit, Nintendo has even advertised such controller options. I think Pikmin 3 did this too.

For non-GamePad controllers, why not
(1) hold the + Button to have a cursor appear on a nearby, propped-up GamePad?
(2) Then select a super jump location with the Left Stick, +Control Pad, or IR Pointer (for the last of which, keep aiming at the TV's sensor bar with the cursor location being placed similarly as if the GamePad was the TV), and
(3) finally confirm with ZL (Pro Controller, Classic Controller Pro), L (Classic Controller), or Z (Wii Remote (Plus) + Nunchuk).

As for non-touch based Inkstrikes, move your GamePad-viewable reticule with the Left Stick or IR Pointer, and press ZR (Pro Controller, Classic Controller Pro), R (Classic Controller), or B (Wii Remote (Plus) + Nunchuk) to fire the special weapon. Definitely much easier for Wii Remote users though.

Or, since the GamePad is on its stand, you can still use touch if you like. It doesn't seem that much different than looking away from the TV and moving your preferred hand away from the stick/buttons to the touch screen. Again, as admirable as Splatoon's implementation of the GamePad, it would have been better to have more control options available. (And count me in as one who believes that pointer > (dual analog + gyro). Not to mention, the Wii Remote + Nunchuk combo has all the inputs needed for Splatoon.) Also, it would be really cool if you could see what controllers your allies, foes, and other players prefer, whether it be in the lobby before a match or in the Inkopolis plaza. :)

I'm sorry but I keep seeing Weezer's Blue Album cover art with all these bands.

As for control options I think of Splatoon continues to grow in player population a separate mode where people who play with Pro Controllers and Off-tv play match with each other.

By not using the Gamepad you're limiting your abilities. Aside from not being able to use spawn to teammates and beacons, as well as missle you lose the large map.

A smaller map on the TV would lose the ability to clearly see your teammates (or enemies if you have the ability) location on the map. You wouldn't know very well what areas are painting. Where the tower or Rainmaker is located. It would be a bit unfair to teammates I think.

I would love off-tv play but get that I would be limited compared to other players.

The sushi chef outfit was the winner of the Famitsu fan contest? Thats awesome! That person must be super happy about how it turned out. Looks great.

Loving the new celebration animations for bucket and gattling gun. So cute.

Ver. 2.0.0 [To be released on August 5th 2015]

Squad Battle
  • Users will be able to create a squad with friends and battle against other squads in Ranked Battle.
*Squad Battle can be accessed by players who are at level 10 or higher.
*Once a squad is created, friends of friends will be able to join the squad.
*Passwords can be set if users wish to only play with specific friends.
*Squad Battle can only be played against other users who are playing Squad Battle. (Ranked Battle players will not be matched up with Squad Battle players.)
  • Users will be able to create a Squad of 4, Squad of 3, or Squad of 2.
*Squads of 3 may be matched up against Squads of 4.
*When a Squad of 3 plays against a Squad of 4, the game will be set so the Squad of 3 respawns faster, but in general, the Squad of 3 will be at a disadvantage.
*Squads of 2 will be matched up with three other Squads of 2, resulting in a match between "Squad of 2 x 2" vs "Squad of 2 x 2".
Private Battle
  • In Private Battle, friends can play in private, customizable matches.
*Friends of friends will be able to join.
*Passwords can be set if users wish to only play with specific friends.
Updated Levels:
  • Users will be able to level up to level 50.
*This will be unlocked once players reach level 20 and go to the lobby.
Updated Ranks:
  • Users will be able to achieve rank S and S+.
*Rank S and S+ can only be attained by playing Ranked Battle, not through Squad Battle.
*Once users reach rank S and S+, the rank will no longer be affected by the results of Squad Battle.
  • Change the calculation method for Rank Points based on the results in Ranked Battle.
  • Users will be sent back to the lobby when their ranks change in Ranked Battle.
New Gear
  • New gear has been added, which will appear in the in-game shop at random.
New Background Music
  • New BGM has been added, which will play during battles at random.
SplatFest Update
  • During the results of Splatfest, the winning percentage will be multiplied by 4 rather than 2.
Stage Adjustments
  • Urchin Underpass: Overall layout has been adjusted in all modes.
  • Saltspray Rig: Adjusted stage layout in Tower Control.

  • Adjust the points needed to use Killer Wail from 180p to 160p.
*The above numbers apply when users do not have the Special Charge Up ability equipped.
Sub Weapon Adjustments:
  • Splash Wall: Correct the amount of damage done by bombs when they are thrown against the Splash Wall.
Ability Adjustments
  • Tenacity: Adjustments will be made so the special gauge begins to fill up after the battle begins, rather than starting prior to the battle.
  • Special Charge Up: Adjustments will be made so the special gauge will fill up in amounts consistent with the amount of area inked.
Sound Effects Adjustments
  • Adjust the sound effects for Inkstrike so it can be heard when it is about to strike on the left, right, or back of the player.
  • Adjust the sound effects for some of the longer range weapons so it can be heard from far away when it hits.
Other:
  • Adjustments will be made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.

So this gatling gun.

It’s range and power look ridiculous. What’s the catch? Is it difficult to manoeuvre/aim with?

Probably. It probably also has a long wind-up time and will likely run through ink really fast. Those would be my guesses.

Can I use the WiiU Pro Controller to play this online or single player yet?? :(
Is there anyone, anywhere, that is consistently rank A+ and exclusively uses the analog sticks with gyro disabled? I find it difficult to believe that even the best stickers could beat the average max rank gyro player.

I remember thinking I was great at Descent on the PC with keyboard only. I was damn good, and won a lot on KALI, but then I got a 3D Sidewinder Pro flight stick and I couldn't believe how much better I was able to perform. Gyro here is like that flight stick.

How? Teams can only play other people who are also doing teams, they will not encounter the people who just hop on Ranked by themselves.

It's a separate ranked mode while still counting towards your Rank. You're taking people away from the Ranked Pool and putting them into an entirely different one.

I don't understand, you can still have the gamepad on deck.

oh neato. I hadn't really got stuck into splatoon really when it launched and in the last week played a boatload. pretty much just got done levelling up everything. so ready for level 50 stretch.

damn it's hard to level up in ranked though. even if I'm playing great, getting matched with horrid randoms to have a streak of -5 makes it super hard to creep past B rank for me anyway. I seem to bounce around middle B-top of B- at the moment.

SM239 uses stick only and he's one of the best players in Gaf. I don't know of anyone else on his level using only the sticks though

I hope NX will have just one supported controller so we can skip the tons of complaining just for complaining sake.

There is nothing about controllers in the update notes and yet half of this thread talk about controllers. It's just ridiculous. You're gamers, you've played in your life with a lot of types of controllers, adapt for God's sake. The Gamepad works perfectly for Splatoon. Yes the game could be adapted to work with Pro Controller or Wiimore or Wavebird or NES controller, as mostly everything can be adapted, but the resources are rather focused on producing new maps, weapons and gears and that's the right decision.

considering that all the controllers have the same input method (sticks + buttons) and are all equivalent in accuracy, that comparison doesn't work.

If you think it's a "choice" you're thinking about it wrong. You're deciding to race a car with square wheels.

Remind me again, how is the pro controller any different in "accuracy" than using the non-gyro gamepad option?

The game already supports the pro controller though. People are just baffled that it's locked to one mode. They don't need to put more than a trivial amount of dev time in to supporting the pro controller in the other modes, by adding some a few simple extra options to the pro controller to make it work in online multiplayer.

On-topic, is the update out already? I thought it was coming tomorrow.

This sounds more complicated/costlier really.

It should actually already be implemented in the game.

A correction if somebody is trying to use an outfit that does not exist, for example any illegitimate value of clothing always rendering as the story mode hero outfit or something.

There's been a lot of previews on it, but it does come out tonight.
