Why do people keep comparing this game to The Order? Those games have no similarities at all, they're not even the same genre.

I got a ton, thus I am a bit torn atm. I do have a favourite though.

Until Dawn |OT| The Fateful Eight
Until Dawn |OT| The Road Not Taken
Until Dawn |OT| I know what you'll play this summer
Until Dawn |OT| A cheerleader, a black guy and 6 of their friends go into the woods..
Until Dawn |OT| Save the Cheerleader!
Until Dawn |OT| To the left, to the left

I like Save the Cheerleader, but that's just me as an old Heroes fan talking.

Cinematic games I feel are often more likely to be met with mixed critical reception, just by virtue of their genre and style of gameplay, which tend to contain less of what some would deem as traditional gameplay, and also less immediately exciting or gratifying design and pacing. Hell, some people (wrongly) reject the gameplay in these types of games as being gameplay at all.

Don't want to derail this too much. I was mainly talking about this thread and OP which has a lot of positive early impressions collected.

Cinematic games can be met with a lot of criticism but I think for the most part they have actually fared pretty well critically. Beyond was mostly panned, but not completely because it was a cinematic game. Obviously games of this type can succeed - look at The Walking Dead S1 and the amount of GOTY awards it got. The Order was ripped to shreds critically because it was an extremely flawed and confused game that doesn't even execute the cinematic side of it's package all that well (instafail QTEs, no choices, half-baked and unsatisfactory plot and character development, list goes on). I think even if the gameplay was superficial, people would be willing to overlook it if it contained a compelling story that offered choice, branching paths...AKA just anything that tries to leverage the strengths of this medium rather than a cutscene dump.

I do think Until Dawn can do a lot better in this regard because it knows exactly what it's going for. If it executes what it sets out to do I think critics and the market will respond positively.

Consider this another vote for this to be the OT caption.

Additionally, I highly encourage you to kick off a spoiler thread at the same time as the OT. It's highly warranted.

Spoiler tags should be enough, the game doesn't have deep gameplay mechanics or difficult bosses, if people aren't going to discuss the story in the OT, what are they going to discuss?

Just tell people to mark spoilers with chapters, just so people can discuss the plot and what they expect from it as they play.

Courier just dropped this off, so pumped to start it but not a fan of playing horror games in daylight so I may have to wait a few hours. Did anyone get banned on twitch for streaming?

Ugh and you even have the steel book. I hate you so so much.

Can I ask what site you work for? Pardon my ignorance.

I write reviews and do some video content for www.ztgd.com, a partner site with N4G. I do my personal youtube channel, and then I also do the whatever podcast featured on bloody-disgusting.com with fellow gaffer Don. So usually 2 of the 3 avenues I work with get content from a product, if not all 3.

Just pre ordered this and it seems I'm getting the "extended edition". Anyone know what's extended about it?
There's a "bonus chapter" being included with all pre-orders that will be released as DLC on launch day.

The Amazon listing refers to it as "In this bonus chapter Matt and Emily, a new couple, are out on the cold and snowy mountain path and it’s not long before they realize that they are not alone. Only your choices determine who will survive."

In the retail copy of the game they go off together during Chapter 2 in a quest to retrieve Emily's designer hand bag that she believes to have left abandoned at the tram station on their way to Josh's family lodge. They effectively leave to recover it and are effectively "written out" of events in the game until they reunite with some of the others towards the end of Chapter 4.

I suspect that Sony excised this content from the core game with the explicit intention of offering it as a pre-order incentive because there's really no other explanation for Matt and Emily to be conveniently ignored by the narrative only to then return without referencing why they left in the first place. This game is extremely diligent when it comes to attention to detail so this is the only explanation that makes sense.

So the Extended Edition will, in fact, be what the game should have been without the pre-order DLC gutted from the disc. This "bonus chapter" should reintegrate the missing content with its original placement within Chapters 2-4 of the game... and the Extended Edition should have all of the content without the need of any download (or include a token with which to download it bundled in whether it's pre-ordered or not).

Did anyone get banned on twitch for streaming?
Haven't heard any reports of people being banned. The usual reporting by people for streaming before street date has been going on to get streams temporarily shut down but no permanent bans have been doled out that I'm aware of. Some folks have already streamed multiple playthroughs without issue.

I'll humor you but I can assure you that was barely a spoiler when it comes to what goes on in this game. Although I thank you for reinforcing my contention that a spoiler thread is most assuredly necessary for next week if you want to ensure the OT isn't a sea of white or black bars.

You know what's funny? Emily's the character I didn't like at all. And guess what? She's one of the three persons that survived in my playthrough. Irony or what?

only 3 people survived your first time? Whoaaaaa. I just got to chapter 9 but as far as I know everyone is alive besides Jessica. Unless shit goes down hardcore in these next two chapters.

I went to bed last night scoffing at this game. I woke up and checked GAF, and now I have it preordered on PSN.

Honestly, I prefer my reviews come from GAFers, not websites. I know I generally won't get a bum scoop here.

The OT would be a wasteland since 90% of the game is story and cinematics.

& yeah, that wasn't a major spoiler, but it's still something important that is part of the narrative.

I am very excited for this game, seems like it would be a blast to play at parties, almost like watching a horror movie with friends. This also haa a lot of potential on live streaming services, which I am also looking forward to!

I have $30 Amazon credit and that just went right towards Until Dawn. Been waiting a long time for a horror game like this :)

THE ORDER's initial impressions indicating it was a 9/10 game were spot on so I am excited to see how this game turns out. PRAISE BE TO THE ORDER

Black bars have started.

Time for me to stop coming to this thread then. Let's see what the reviews bring in a couple of days.

I'm sure this will end up being a 7/10 game with the benefit of being kinda dumb on purpose unlike Heavy Rain.

With this game's big selling point being its variability of outcomes based on gamer agency and choice, I almost wonder if reviewers will be able to effectively convey the experience with only having enough time for one or two playthroughs at most. You could literally watch a dozen streams of the game on Twitch and see something new each time.

Not really. I thought the same when somebody suggested a spoiler thread for Life is Strange but once the spoiler tread was up things went fine. People can post using black bars in the main OT when they're still in the middle of the game to share their progress or impressions so far while the spoiler thread will probably be visited only by people who have already fully beaten the story and want to compare their results with other people or discuss the story as the story is pretty good from what I've played so far. It's pretty annoying to have a discussion when you have to put everything in spoiler tags.

I think it will be fine and I even think it's necessary.
