Grandia 2 Anniversary Edition on August 24, $20 (25% off sale at launch)

Does it really matter? That's its original presentation. Changing the aspect ratio either means showing less of each scene or ending up with a bunch of places not designed for 16:9 breaking. Especially in this game with a bunch of 4:3 FMVs used for special effects.

I just got all the way through Grandia for the first time last night, I'm so ready to buy this. Where the hell is it?

Man, I hope you enjoyed it. One of the best main themes ever

Well, Grim Fandango make a bad trend.

Both Grim Fandango and this were both standard ratio (Well, let's call it "90's standard" now hahahahah). A lot of pre-rendered stuff means either cropping (no), pillarboxing (no) or stretching (hell no) to fit a wide ratio. I guess if they really wanted to they could have had some kind of fancy graphic to fill out the sides every time the game needed to go 4:3 (which is about half of it, including the Skill FMVs in combat)

edit: beaten re: above

edit2:
If you untick 'Keep Aspect Ratio', you will get a stretched image for selected widescreen resolutions.

Why. WHY. WHY IS THIS EVEN AN OPTION

Might as well put a checkbox labelled "Would you like cancer?"

Seems like there's a glitch?

RPG Site said:
The majority of my time with the game was issue-free with respect to glitches, but I started noticing something odd that occasionally happened on the after-battle results screen. After some testing and consistent reproducibility, I decided to highlight this glitch in some detail.

Sometimes, if you clear a regular encounter exceptionally quickly, and skipping post-battle outros (by, say, repeatedly pressing the confirm button to get the results screen out of the way more quickly), the battle won't award the player the coins it should have.

This one seems pretty bad.

This one seems pretty bad.

So, hard mode is just monster's HP increased by 20%, you can potentially miss out on coins, the frame rate is locked to 30fps and it is indeed 4:3 only. :(

Well, at least its dual audio and I no longer have to dig out my DC anymore.

Heh, at least on PC there's a chance of it being fixed. Can't say the same for PS2 version. (Yikes!)

Personally after hearing that i'd prefer to stick with the DC version over VGA, I wonder if some modders out there can find a way to force 16:9

And as expected, no HD HUDs either. Or just HD fonts.

I can live with everything else but that. I know, I'm weird. But pixelated HUDs just look so bad and give me a certain emulator vibe that I don't like when I'm not, in fact, playing on an emulator.

This is a downer, especially when there's been a hard mode hack on the internet for ages that significantly rebalances the game.
It seems that it's just a re-release and not a remaster/HD version. They don't even call the game a remaster/HD.
Yeah, when I noticed that some time ago, it triggered some alarms

I can wait for cheap deal then, but at least its have dual audio and based on DC version

I'll play with 480p windowed and japan audio if buying it.

Even some emulators nowadays have HD textures for certain games' HUD and fonts.

I was hoping that they would replace the black bars with some kind of artwork like other games have done. Will still grab this sometime down the road.

Valkyria Chronicles had some HD UI elements rebuilt (by fans) from the ground up within weeks of release. (Thanks Durante!)

Thats the only thing I'm a bit sad about too, it just doesn't look right...

Oh well, I haven't played this since the year it got released, so still looking forward to it :)

And that money glitch doesn't seem to be something thats hard to fix

Laptop gaming here and this looks like a no no, despite my initial hype. Maybe I need to stick my dreamcast's original

It's a sample size of one laptop, I would wait for impressions and look how it runs after the game is out, maybe it's just a problem with his specific laptop :)

Doesn't original dreamcast game run at 60 fps?

I really wanted to grab this, since I've been playing through Grandia 1 on my PSTV, and I love the fuck out of Grandia.

But I think I'll wait and see if GAF or someone fixes this mess.

locked 30fps? and Hard mode is just enemies with 20% more health?

I haven't played Grandia II, is the game hard at all in "normal"?

This is bullshit, fuck that I'll not support a lazy +20% HP mode, this game was WAY TOO EASY !!!! This is not going to make the game any harder....No way this is only that ?!? Not def, str boost ??? Nothing else...

They lost a sale....

It's not a mess, It's the original specs of the game. Not every game can just be made widescreen without problems

Chill out, being on PC I'm sure someone out there will make a proper hard mode mod in due time.

So, it is a bad port in most ways that ports can be bad, but it has a hard mode... which changes almost nothing?

I think I'll have to wait for some mods and/or clarification of the Hard mode.

Is there anything wrong with the old PC version of the game? Is the balance mod good for that?

Getting New Bugs like the Coin thing is certainly a mess. Between that, the wimpy "hard mode", and still being 4:3 I have no reason to buy the game on yet another platform. I might as well just play my PS2 version.

PS2 version itself is filled with problems, though. With this one running at higher resolutions + being based on dreamcast version it's still the best version. Specially of some modders put a bit of work on it.

That this version does not have enough new stuff to justify a new purchase from you is fair game, but I still wouldn't call a version that is better than the PS2 version in every other way a mess just because of one easy to fix bug, which may be also already fixed when the game releases today, so lets just wait :)

I'm still going to get this. Pretty much what I expected with a minor glitch that I assume will get patched. Right now the only way to play a good version of Grandia 2 is to have a Dreamcast. This is significantly better than the other ports, is easily available for purchase, and runs on modern hardware. Oh and hey higher resolutions, yay.

People just complain about everything with PC releases these days. How long until someone comes in with fov slider complaints?

Second time I'm bringing up Valkyria Chronicles PC in this thread but yeah

Old PC version and PS2 versions were a mess. The old PC version would outright crash on some skills due to shenanigans with the FMV.

I can't say what this port is like, but the fact that it's based off the Dreamcast version and is advertised as such is already a good sign. (We'll see, etc)

People in this thread saying they're better off playing the old PC port or PS2 version is typical internet hyperbole. Maybe that's true, but it's too early to tell, and many of the problems of those two versions aren't related to visual specifications.

How long until someone comes in with fov slider complaints?

It's only a funny joke till it happens...

Anyone remember? Many games were 60fps on the Dreamcast, but I can't remember if Grandia 2 was one of them. If it was 60fps in the original and 30fps here that would be a dealbreaker to me.

The last time I tried to run grandia 2 on Reicast on my ouya I tried the forced widescreen option and it worked fine, some menu stuff was cut off but the overworld and battles were fully 16:9 visually.

I hate to use the word lazy but this port sounds like it was just done without much thought put into it.

The RPG Site piece is mine, actually. I can answer some questions if you have them. I should mention I'm no PC guru or anything like that.

But right, gist of it is that I was surprised my laptop, which can play early HD-era games pretty readily, struggled with this at 720p or higher. The game is 4:3, 30fps, no support for Nvidia DSR for resolutions above 1080p.

It's mostly a sharpened port but it mostly works well (on a GTX 780) otherwise. As someone who played the PS2 version a few years ago, it's much, much better than that. No chugging every time the camera pans around a city for each new place you visit.

The glitch I encountered was amusing, but I figure it can be fixed.

I'll post a short video or two (including that amusing glitch) probably today sometime.

I'd already made it 30 hours through a couple of other times before this one so I actually got a little burnt out this time by the end.

Loved that theme but couldn't understand why it sounds like something from the 70s/early 80s.

Seems like this port isn't ideal but might give it a go anyway if it ever comes up on the store. I've played most of Grandia 2 on PS2, think it's time I finished it.
