Do we have to worry about Notch?

He's doing his wealth wrong. If he hates his shallow mega rich lifestyle, he should do something worthwhile with his time - develop another game, set up a foundation, bring education to the 3rd world, or something.

I'm sure 99.9999% of people on earth don't even know what the guy even looks like so he could even live somewhere quietly and in comfort.

Seems like he needs a new project to work on and not just party the whole day with famous people on Ibiza.
With this much money he could collab with other people in the Indie community to make some amazing games.

I don't think he regrets selling Minecraft or getting the money, I think he regrets creating Minecraft. I'm pretty sure I've seen him express that.
Saly, he now finds himself in this situation where he'll never be "the guy next door" with a "normal" life and doesn't want to be the rich famous guy because that lifestyle just doesn't suit him. I feel so bad for him :(

Well if he really wants out of this depression then he'll have to find something else to focus on, what better than what he was good at before, making games?

From what I've read he does make games. He just doesn't release them because he doesn't want anything to be "the next Minecraft". He knows everything he creates will either be shot down because it's not Minecraft or put him in the position he just got out of that he hates.

I believe there is a point, like earning say a 100K a year, where earning any more than that doesn't actually make you any happier. Still, I'd love to have his "problem" though

Poor guy, let's ask all the people with real problems (like the guy on gaf who couldn't afford his eye surgery initially after being blinded by industrial bleach, or the people who don't know how they're going to find someone to take care of their kids while they are working late so they can keep the lights on) to pray for him.

Dude has lost all perspective on life.

Hopefully all of you being cocks get a better reaction if you ever start suffering from depression.
Other people who suffer from depression can't choose to stop interacting with assholes, quit their day job, surround themselves with friends in a low stress holiday resort etc etc

Poor me. I'm so rich I don't know what to do with my life. lol

Depression and mental illness can affect us all.

Of course it's simpler to take the easy route and point and say 'Oh poor poor you, all that money and you're still not happy.'

It's really sad actually.

Sounds like he should start a new company to be busy.

Dontate your friends a few million $ and live next door?

Should make a new Brick Game. The handheld.
Seriously tho he will be fine and hope it won't get crazy. Just lonely is all.

I mean, look.

Everyone has something shitty about their life. Just because that person is "successful" doesn't make what they are experiencing any less OR more valid.

People have ups and downs. Notch, if you are reading this, I hope all is well.

Take it easy, yo.

Depression can affect you no matter your circumstances. Just because he has a lot of money, it doesn't mean he's immune from these issues.

Of course we have to look at these things relatively -- and someone like Notch obviously has it better than nearly everyone else -- but that doesn't mean we should withdraw sympathy for someone who is in a bad place right now just because he's immensely wealthy. Having suffered with depression, it sucks when arseholes told me I should stop moaning because I had it better than someone else. Unhappiness is not a pissing contest.

Do I get that money too tho?

Poverty + depression is far worse.

Do you live in an industrialized nation? If you do, your poverty is still miles better than others have it. Suffering is relative. He's clearly depressed. No need to joke about it.

How about suffering from depression AND living on $200/month, without even having a possibility to afford therapist/medication? So yeah, I'm still sure he still has it better than me. I'm SO worried about Notch.

We hear about this sort of thing so often it's become a cliché... Anybody with half a brain should know by now that instant fame and/or fortune need to be dealt with by seeking help. Get a therapist or life coach or something. Hell in Notch's case he can hire an entire team..

The community part of that I can agree with, the amount of people insulting him for taking money from Microsoft was incredible. Not difficult to believe it would extent to any other thing he would do.

As for the lifestyle causing him to feel isolated. I understand it can feel that way, but I have to wonder whether he can just go for a more humble lifestyle. Seems like a waste, but if he feels happier living a less extravagant life, why not do that?

And yes, of course plenty of people here are showing their jealousy, imagining people can't be unhappy when they are rich. I'm not saying money can't help with that, but having loads of money does not automatically make you happy.

Money doesn't buy you happiness, but it removes all obstacles to happiness if you spend it properly. People who wonder why they're not happy when they just go out partying with celebrities need to use their head. Go travelling. See the world. Learn new skills. Go parachuting, scuba diving, bungee-jumping, absolutely anything. The world is your plaything, yet so many rich people just go out drinking at nightclubs. So boring and thoughtless.

I'm crying on the inside.

If you're bored mess around and make another independent game, or did Microsoft pinky swear you'd never make a game again...?

Or just get a freaking hobby. Start a vinyl collection. Shit, I don't know. Something.

I always thought of Notch as a weak minded person.
Really hope he pulls through.

He's really proving to be just that, yeah.

I guess he was blinded by the money and now is seeing reality. Things will probably fix themselves over time, as long as he doesn't run away.

Oh fuck off. Talk about a first world problem.
It's not a first world problem. It's the great truth of money. A certain amount of it removes some stresses from life, but no amount can truly fulfill a person.

Anyone who thinks money = happiness is never going find happiness.

People get down regardless of what their personal circumstances are. Things are different, people were not particularly nice and he hasn't become comfortable with his wealth. If he keeps holding onto how things were it will just cause him a world of pain and needs to get out of the past and into the present, what can his money do that he couldn't do before, does philanthropy, investing in talent or education sound like fun to him. They are a few possibilities. Or delve into hedonism and go out in a ball of plastic surgery, food, drugs, hookers, servants and ostentatiousness which has been all the rage with the rich as a method of dealing with depression throughout history.

Hopefully all of you being cocks get a better reaction if you ever start suffering from depression.

Well it happens to everyone, if you're so worried about our reactions about someone else, then that someone else shouldn't be posting about his life online for everyone else to see. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

From what I've read he does make games. He just doesn't release them because he doesn't want anything to be "the next Minecraft". He knows everything he creates will either be shot down because it's not Minecraft or put him in the position he just got out of that he hates.

Ah, well that's a shame. He should still get back into development somehow. Maybe form an indie studio or a bunch of indie studios and spend his free time working with other developers instead. Money will never bring him happiness, it's what he does with it which might.

He can pull a Bill Gates and make a massive contribution towards something that legitimately improves the world, and in the process leaves him just ordinary rich rather than filthy stinking

This.

Guess it sucks when you're so rich that you don't have a purpose in life anymore. Then why not go for the ultimate purpose and try to make the world a better place with your riches and your time?

I'm not talking about giving the money away, but fund school projects in development countries etc. Stuff like that.

I know he gave bonuses from his own pockets but that equates to £153,600 to each person, really, that is being cheap.

Some people have to work for 10 years straight to get that kind of money. And this was just a bonus.

What kind of world are you living in where that's 'being cheap'?

The people in this thread mocking him and talking about first world problems are some of the luckiest people alive.

Why?

Because clearly they've never known depression or loneliness.

Depression isn't about what you have or what you are doing, it's a feeling deep inside that can overwhelm you and leave you feeling utterly helpless. Being isolated from your friends, family or usual routine can make it even worse and all you want is a little normality.

So yeah, you're lucky but my god I hope for your own futures you learn a little bit of empathy.

Notch if by any chance you read this thread, talk to people. Not "cry for help" tweets (which is a brave and great start of asking for help), but people who can help. Whether that's family or a close friend or a professional or peers in your situation.

If you wanna go back into game dev, do it. Odds are you'll never have another Minecraft cos that was a miracle but figure out what you enjoy and go do it. Even if that means being a "regular dev" somewhere. Hell, go apply for a job at mojang and get back to coding Minecraft if that's what you want to do

I can't tell if the OP is sarcastic or not.

I'm sure he will settle in being filthy rich. Maybe he'll find a cause or buy a sports team like what other filthy rich people do.

He can live like someone making 50k a year and it won't matter. Everyone knows him, and knows that he has that money. It's one search away if they don't already. That changes every interaction he has. He knows he has access to that money too. Even if he gave it all away, he would have known never wanting for anything.

He doesn't seem super enthused about the game industry. Who can blame him? He needs to find a passion or something rewarding outside of the industry.

He should go into politics, he'll be too busy stabbing and getting backstabbed to be depressed. With that money he'd win too.

"White people" problems I guess...

Why does he wear the mask!?
It obviously is, but he is still unhappy.

I find this notion weird that rich people can't be unhappy because they can afford everything. Especially with all the tabloids and such detailing us everyday what train wrecks so many of them become.

It's almost as if you need more than money to be happy. Not that i pity Notch, he'll be fine.

It seems to me he'd feel better if he took up a hobby. Maybe started programming again.

Failing that, he should consult a therapist not Twitter.

It's not a first world problem. It's the great truth of money. A certain amount of it removes some stresses from life, but no amount can truly fulfill a person.

Anyone who thinks money = happiness is never going find happiness.

Oh of course money doesn't = happiness

And I wasn't mocking the fact he was sad, or maybe even depressed. I just found the tweet a very weird thing to post.

Again though, why consult Twitter and not a doctor/therapist? It's like when people get illnesses and consult GAF instead of a doctor.

A six figure bonus is cheap?

Well when you make a 10 figure amount from selling your company and the people he worked with were probably his friends, you would expect he would give each of them a couple of million. Does he need £1.3B for himself?

I have absolutely no sympathy for the guy. If I was the had that type of money, I'd live the same way, with maybe a couple of extravagances like my own house but I wouldn't go full douche bag rich guy.

Nobody is saying that.
The thing is if your depression comes from your lifestyle and you are billionaire you have the power of change that.
Open a new company, work 40 hours per week, find a hobby... anything, nobody says that you have to spend your life in the sunny Ibiza drinking more champagne than water if you are rich.
When your depression comes from your lifestyle and you can't do nothing to change that... the thing is different.

He has the money to do something about his depression unlike many others.
I'm not going to start feeling sorry for him because having money destroyed his feeble ambitions and removed his goals in life.
