This just popped up for me

“Proof that Europe is Christian. Christians walk on water — Muslim children sink.”

Holy shit. Why did anyone involved think this was in good taste? I know there are anti-Muslim sentiments but I can't believe someone still gave this the greenlight. What the fuck is wrong with you?

They ran another one as well, same artist:

I think there was already a thread on this

Regardless, that magazine is stupid, and doesn't seem funny or clever at all

Independent of this cover btw

This isn't satire. This is pointing at a dead kid and laughing.
It seems to be making fun of Europe's indifference to the migrants and those that say stupid thing about only taking Christian refugees

Im confused why people don't see the Europeans as the but of the joke.

It's a like the whole witch drowning thing. The society that does this is the cruel one

No, that's why it's satire. It's mocking how Europe is OK with Christian migrants, but hesitant about Muslim ones.

I think you are trying to put a positive spin on something that doesn't have any positives to it.

That's Jesus to the left (Who was a jew anyway).

The context of the picture and hebdo's usual schtick points to this being mocking a drowned syrian kid.

You guys don't seem to get thats its a stab against the EU and its citizens and not making fun of a drowned child.

This.

The message is: Europe doesnt give a damn, proved by the drowned baby and lack of willingness to help people who wouldve probably been helped instantly if they were Christian americans or something.

Remember people, countries like Hungary and their people are openly against letting in "the muslims".

What's so bad about this?

This is like a perfect example of satire. You have a McDonnell's, first world concept of cheap fast food, 2 for the price of 1!, while thousands of refugee kids are trying to survive the trip (with many dying on the way) to life that doesn't have the chance of being beheaded or killed from government artillery. All while the EU does little to help assist them and aid in their ability to achieve that goal.

Shit, it's better than those happy do good pictures of kids playing in the ocean after FUCKING DYING. That's insulting, instead of looking at how horrific the situation is people made happy little pictures to make themselves feel better about the situation.

I personally find this more insulting than what was posted in OP.

No no, it can't possibly be that. It has to be racist, there is literally no other possible interpretation.

I mean Charlie Hebdo's record isn't exactly the best defense for itself, but man, jesus christ.

Literally Jesus Christ.

Like, he's right there. Jesus.

Help the little boy Jesus.

Why won't you help him.

Come on people, this is quite clearly satirizing Europe's indifference to children dying at our doorstep, not mocking the dying children. Here's a quote from the very article in the OP

"Maajid Nawaz, founder of the think-tank Quilliam defended the magazine's cartoon: "Taste is always in the eye of the beholder. But these cartoons are a damning indictment on our anti-refugee sentiment," he wrote on Facebook. "The McDonald's image is a searing critique of heartless European consumerism in the face of one of the worst human tragedies of our times.

The image about Christians walking on water while Muslims drown is (so obviously) critiquing hypocritical European Christian "love".

Fellow Muslims, not everything and everyone are against us, every time. But if we keep assuming they are by reacting like this, they will surely become so."

Charlie Hebdo is incredibly left-wing. I can't even imagine them suddenly mocking drowning refugees.

What's the joke? Is there a joke?
I think the joke is mocking the discriminatory acceptance of Syrian Christian and Syrian Muslim refugees. It's in bad taste, but I think it's to make a point about how horrifying things can be for the refugees and how callous such discrimination is.

That is a generous reading of what is otherwise appears to be an anti-Muslim joke of the sort that are frequently told by actual racists.

First tragedy, then farce.
I think these are supposed to be mocking the callousness of Europe

That said, Charlie Hedbo is trash. The tragedy made people forget that it is an awful piece of filth, because obviously what happened to them can never ever happen to anyone for expressing any opinion, no matter how vile.

But, this is pretty par for the course for their "satire"

I see they're back to being a garbage racist hateful rag.

Shameful shit. Don't these people have kids of their own? Mocking the tragic death of a child, smh.

The joke is on Christians and European countries that say they will take Syrian Christians, but not Muslims.

Outrage over something you don't understand.

I think people misunderstood the drawings.
For the first one, it's about how some mayors in France, from right party, claimed to only accept christians migrants.

For the second one, it's not really mocking either, rather mocking the European governments for the situation.

Well, some of their drawings are really stupid and not subtile at all, some are fine. But in that case, it's all about misunderstanding.

I think the problem is that this looks really bad unless you apply a very certain lens. I mean, imagine the refugees seeing this.

It is vile and offensive but if you think a little that is clearly not what they are doing.
