Star Ocean 5 screens and character art

That's a Kojima level of deflection by that dev.

Considering it's something that existed in the franchise since the second game, I wouldn't say that. I mean symbology / heraldry / runology / spellmarks is something that has consistently shown up from game to game throughout the series.

It's not this new thing just to have this character look a specific way just for Star Ocean 5.

Of course, I understand why she shows off her legs, I'm not so sure it's the upper part of her costume is justified however. I mean even Celine, Nel, and Myuria at least had somewhat more modesty and still showed off their symbological runes. Fiore's design does seem to pander a bit.

Dat Menu.

All JRPG should have 2D character art menu's and icons dammit. Even you FFXV.

Plastic CG menu art be damned.

O look another star ocean 5 thread thats only going to wind up focusing on the witch!!! Sigh this is like the fourth star ocean thread you'd think people would either ignore it or jus not bother anymore..

Anyway characters look great mc looks like a cool guy reminds me of fayt alot

Well it's a thread about the art and screenshots. The thread is either going to turn into a debate about character design or a debate about graphics. Or both.

Which engine is this running on?

No idea honestly, but the tech is a very decent leap over S04.

Its obviously not UE4 as there is a last gen version.

It could be the SO4 engine, or evolution of that.

Or perhaps even that new engine they were working on some years ago (which likely got canned).

Who knows!

I'm not sure what you're getting at? It looks pretty much like that in game.

Yup, absolutely the same lol

From this

to this

Playstation 3 - Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope = 1024x720 (2xAA, in field), ~930x512 (2xAA, in battle)

Xbox 360 - Star Ocean 4 = 1248x702 (2xAA + edge blur/DOF, in field), ~936x512 (no AA, in battle)

That's how the game ended up being

Anyway, let's hope for the best

Just watched the TGS walkthrough video and the animations look surprisingly fluid in and out of battle.

Real-time on field battles is also a massive upgrade.

After SO4 "gameplay" screenshots pre-release, i'm skeptical that it's gonna look like that, a lot

Most of the screenshots in this topic are captures from a playable build of the game at TGS, that is 70% complete, said game apparently on a entirely new engine, nevermind the fact running on console that is generation above the PS3.

Despite the fact that SO5 is a PS3 port title to the PS4, it looks substantially better than SO4.

Looking real good. Hoenstly I think this might be my most hyped game for 2016. Which is saying a lot.

Ikr? Same thing happened with Xenoblade X. I get this is an art thread but it gets real annoying in every thread where people complain about the faces or the witch character over and over. We get it. Plus it isn't as if character designs like this are new to this franchise or jrpgs in general. Don't know why so many people are surprised.

Yeah, I'm very much expecting a MGSV situation with this game.

A scaled back last-gen version and a very nice looking current-gen version.

Blonde guy/Victor looks awesome, this game's Dias/Albel/Arumat for sure

It's certainly a similar scenario. They've already confirmed that the PS4 version is running at 60fps while the PS3 version is 30fps. So that's already exactly like MGSV.

Let's be fair here - most JRPG female character designs don't show off so much upper body skin, even in a fanservice-oriented franchise such as Neptunia. I've certainly not seen these kind of checkerboard openings in a shirt before.

Do we know if the PS3/PS4 version are being made simultaneously or if one version is going to be made a port of the other?

On PS4 there's no reason for it to not look like that. Its an up port of the PS3 version which is the main platform, already confirmed when the game was revealed.

I'm also assuming SO5 is running on SO4's engine, but the fidelity here is making that not a problem. SO4 had a lot of issues with IQ on both 360 and PS3.

See the face thing i get really although i feel u on the xenoblade x stuff i remember that. But as u said this is nothing new to the franchise or jrpgs, she looks cool and hopefully her personality is good and her magic is useful thats all i can ask for

Over sexualized female characters are very common in JRPGs. If most of the complaints are about her showing too much upper body skin, that's one thing, but most complaints I've seen are about her design as a whole.

Could be worse. It could be one of those threads in which because SO4 was low mark of the series compared to the previous games, all of the cynics and skeptics are convinced that every single Star Ocean game after that one low point in the series cannot possibly improve or go beyond it.

Kind of like a revisionist memory that forgets the games that came before that one low point. (Case in point with DMC2 when DMC3 was announced, and many other games with poor sequel with an newly announced game after the fact, I am trying to think of others but Xenoblade is only one that comes to mind)

At least most of the attention hasn't been about that and is more about the new open combat system without transitional screens.

Would this make Star Ocean 5 possibly the first party based action jrpg with no transitional screens in combat in 3D? (Edit: No there was Xenoblade before that...I could also say Secret of Mana but that's not 3D)

I would like to point out that in 16 screens where they show enemies, there are 13 completely different enemies (not just in name, but in appearance, size, form and species). I actually think there are 14 completely different enemies because of this screen. There seems to be two enemies there, or maybe that's just me...

Plus there are some enemies shown before not in these screenshots (like the more human enemies from the TGS demo).

They are either showing their entire bestiary in a few weeks or the game will have quite a lot of variety...

Considering that most of the screens and footage are from the early game, I think we can expect a good bestiary in this. It would be quite the feat. The last big game with a big bestiary that I can remember (excluding recycled enemies) is FFXII, and even then it was not THAT big...

Not that anyone here actually cares though... You guys can go back talking about the witch or something...

The only problem was resolution right? If release Star Ocean 4 didn't run at "just above 480p" res, I think it would have looked pretty close to the pre-release shots

Actually there was a thread for the exact thing you're talking about for this game, on mobile so i can't find it but i think it was like "Anybody else worried aboutocean the new star ocean" then goes on to bring up star ocean 4 and mid tier game development(i thought we wanted that back? Not wanted it gone)

Oh, look, you can actually change characters to play as each who have their own distinctive style of fighting, why can't FFXV do the same?

I honestly think this looks better than FFXV (as far as Action RPGs goes), at least in terms of combat and actual gameplay. FFXV will have the bells and whistles of being visually superior whilst this has a better chance of being more fun to actually play, since, you know, changeable characters and all.
