Battletech |KS| Turn-based tactical mech combat, Harebrained Schemes, Summer 2017

The meta's ridiculously silly and unbalanced, and there's a lot of very valid complaints about the pricing structure for premium items, but the core movement and combat is solid. It's the systems built upon that core that are by far the most unfortunate bits.

Thanks. Guess I'll at least try it out and see how it goes for a little bit.

Damn you should check out Dragonfall and Hong Kong, because those should dispel your worries. Returns was a huge disappointment in comparison.

I know about those, that's what I used SR as an example of a poor first game that was a basis for next entries in Shadowrun universe. You must remember that BatteTech is completely different game, with new mechanics, world, etc. It's not continuation of Shadowrun series.

This is going to be the first Kickstarter campaign I participate in. I've played MWO a lot and enjoyed it very much. It was my first BT game, but I'm diving deeper into the universe every day :D

So it is definitely in the big leagues, that is good to see.

Gives me confidence that it'll be one of those KS's that hit all their goals. I'm most excited for the 1.8m tier, but if we look like we'll get multiplayer, I'll double/triple dip to get copies for friends.

Sweet, that $1 mil should happen within an hour, then it's on to the most important goal. That mercenary mode sounds too good to miss out on.

Dragonfall > Returns > Hong Kong

There, I said it.
Wow, in your 6 years at GAF that's the wrongest thing you ever wrote.

Hong Kong is pretty much par with DF:DC, an improvement in some areas and a minor step back in others. I'm not even a DMS hater, but it's far worse than both.

I expect this to be a little bit more frontloaded (like Torment for example), but 2 Million are pretty much guaranteed at this point. 2,5 should definitely be doable.

The story of Hong Kong didn't grip me like the stories of Dragonfall and Returns.

And I don't think the gameplay improvements from Dragonfall onwards have been that significant.

In fact, I was pretty disappointed they didn't even seem to try evolving the gameplay, making it more complex, in Hong Kong at all.

I think once they reveal the in-between goals from $1m to $1.85m, it will pique some interest again. I'm betting there's more than one goal.

Returns has the most basic Shadowrun story possible with no team mates, much less interesting or deep npcs and much less interesting missions with no choices in choosing the order you do them in. Also a really annoying restriction in the final mission.

But then again you are the one that keeps insisting on putting in loot mechanics in a Shadowrun game so we know what garbage tier ideas you have for evolving the gameplay.

Backed at $25.

Don't care for the PvP goal, but hopefully all the single player stretch goals will be reached!

LRM's locked on.

I completely understand this objection from a technical and visual perspective, but considering that HBS already has much more experience with Unity from the Shadowrun games, I imagine we will have better and perhaps more polished gameplay features with Unity than with Unreal. Switching to Unreal would probably mean that they would have to use more time and resources on getting to know the engine and its tools. Those resources and that time might have been spent better on improving the game rather than getting the fundamentals right.

So I agree that UE4 would have been preferable from a technical and visual standpoint, but maybe Unity 5 will have its own advantages (besides the lack of a 5% royaltee fee that UE4 has)

This didnt happen with Hong Kong though. But its likely they rushed it to meet their deadline. Battletech seems like it will be getting a fairer shake in terms of dev time.

We will finally get another good BattleTech game! Now I am really excited. Maybe reaching that 1.8 mil won't be so tough after all :)

lol ;)

Loot is a great idea.

Doesnt fit Shadowrun. Shadowrun is all about shopping for items. Loot also messes with the tight budget the games put you on so you cant buy everything for everyone which is very different from pretty much every other RPG where the economy is pretty much utterly broken by the end of the game.

I'll probably back this later. Not overly familiar with the Battletech universe, but I did play Mechwarrior 2 quite a bit back in the day. This game sounds up my alley, and HBS has become a pretty trusted dev in book, so I think I'm in. If not I will certainly be buying at release.

Hope it's not front loaded like Bard's Tales

But Battletech has been so mismanaged for such a long time, the hunger is ferocious

The thing that I'm most excited about with this one is the setting; the political infighting between the great houses of the IS was a lot more interesting to me than the conflict between Wolf and Jade Falcon in MW2.

I backed at $25. They are saying they made a little over $1m within 24 hours. I guess the Mechwarrior/Battletech thirst is real.

It probably also helps that people who are fans of harebrained and not specifically interested in Battletech are backing.

Update #2
  • $1,100,000 - Cinematic Transitions: We'll add short cutscenes for various events in game - such as deploying your forces to the battlefield - and for key moments in the single-player story.
  • $1,200,000 - Player-Character Origin Stories: In BATTLETECH, you’ll create your own mercenary character to star in the story. If we hit this funding level, you'll be able to choose one of six origin stories for your mercenary commander's career. Are you the only heir of a once noble family that has since fallen from favor? The bastard child of a famous MechWarrior? You decide.
  • $1,350,000 - Voice Acting: We'll record a cast of talented voice actors to act as your advisers, provide mission briefings, and record battlefield emotes. We’ll also add voice acting to the animatics for important moments in the story.
  • $1,550,000: 3D MechWarrior Portrait Customization: We'll build a complete 3D portrait customization system for you to customize the look of both your MechWarriors and your own Mercenary commander.

Funding wise its currently matching Pillars of Eternity. I think 2.5m will be easily done, but how much more it gets will than that will depend on those final days.

Wow those goals are so great. Voice acting is essential and Customizing mechwarriors appearances sounds very intriguing

"This is Lynx, my armor's coming apart"

"This is the Beast, another one bites the dust"

"Sir, that last shot injured me"

"Scratch one enemy mech"

"Sir, this is Firestorm."

"Sir, this is Outlaw, I have a new contact on my screen"

"Vixen here"

I really loved the voice work in the original Mechcommander. Or maybe I just heard them so many times I lost any sense of critical standards.

HS keeps delivering amazing art style. Streach goals are pretty good. Can´t wait for more turn based goodness.
