Smash Wii U & 3DS Downloadable Characters Discussion and Information on Smash Ballot

I wonder if it is because 3DS don't really have any swimming animation and functions.
It doesn't even work in 8 player, so it's almost certainly performance.

What I assumed was that it was one of the lesser intense Brawl stages, but it appears that couldn't be further from the truth.

For some reason in my head I figured the DS ran Phantom Hourglass just fine, it could probably do Purate Ship no problem.

Guess not.

Wait, what? I played both stages on 3DS just a bit ago and I swear they used the stereoscopic 3D. They're "flat" stages like Flat Zone, etc., but they still utilize the 3D effect for the backgrounds and such. Unless I'm just crazy and seeing 3D effects when they don't exist. =P
Maybe the person who told me misunderstood that they were flat stages.

Hello Smash-GAF. I've been obsessed with MGSV the past month. (I think it's great, including the controversial story.) Anyways, I say this because... man, I miss Snake in Smash. :-(

the mii costume trailers always have me wishing they'd drop the music they use when highlighting 3rd party cameo costumes into the game

i don't really know where they'd go but i just think it'd be neat!!!

if they sold music packs with nothing but rips i'd buy that too

I felt the same way with the TOS music. I imagine that and the MH music would just be plopped onto Gaur Plain.

Oh yeah. I forget all about that.

Welcome back, I didn't realized that you got unbanned by now.

So yea, let's do this

3DS from Wii U:
Kongo Jungle 64
- Kongo Jungle (Why should the Wii U get all the music sharing fun?)
- Donkey Kong Country Returns (Vocal)

Yoshi's Island (Melee) ...I think this could work on the 3DS?
- Yoshi's Island (Melee)
- Super Mario World Medley

Wii U from 3DS:
Yoshi's Island (Brawl)
- Yoshi's Island (4 Remix)
- Obstacle Course (Changing Seasons)
- Obstacle Course (Summer/Spring)
- Obstacle Course (Fall/Winter)
- Yoshi's Story (Melee)
- Yoshi's Story (64)
- Ending (Yoshi's Story)
- Flower Field
- Wildlands
- Bandit Valley

RIP Yoshi's Island (Brawl), the song I forgot even existed even if it is a cool remix

Corneria
- Corneria (Melee)
- Venom (Melee)
- Main Theme (Star Fox 64)
- Theme From Area 6/ Missile Slipstream
- Area 6
- Area 6 V2 can go die in a fire for all I care
- Star Wolf/Sector Z
- Star Wolf (Star Fox 64)

Just give me Corneria and Yoshi's Island Brawl on the Wii U and I love you forever Sakurai. Kongo would be nice on the 3DS.

Wii U Exclusive Brawl Ports

Frigate Orpheon
- Brinstar Depths
- Vs Ridley
- Sector 1
- Vs Parasite Queen
- Vs Meta-Ridley
- Multiplayer (Metroid Prime 2)
- Psycho Bits
- The Burning Lava Fish

Rainbow Cruise
- Rainbow Cruise
- Peach's Castle (Melee)
- Main Theme (Super Mario 64)
- Main Theme (Super Mario 64) (Remix)
- Slider
- Sky Station Galaxy
- Super Bell Hill

Both

Pokemon Stadium 3DS Music
- Pokemon Stadium
- Pokemon Stadium 2
- Pokefloats
- Main Theme (Red and Blue)
- Road to Viridian City
- Pokemon Center
- Gym/Evolution
- Victory Road (Ruby/Sapphire)
- Vs Wild Pokemon (X/Y)
- Battle! (Reshiram and Zekrom)

Re-using music is awesome. I'd much rather the classic stages have their iconic music than a bunch of work arounds to try and avoid re-using music.

What I'd love on the Wii U version is Jungle Japes. Hilarious stage, it's become something of a tradition in my circle of friends to play on it while drinking.

Been thinking about the future of DLC. I think it's not gonna be too many characters left.

Looking at how long it likely took to get Mewtwo out, and the state he was in, I think there's a smaller team than we're thinking and they're doing really great at what they can produce for the team they have.

For that, I think all we're getting is Shovel Knight and Layton.

Why not Wolf? Pichu? Snake? Resources have to go to these characters and I think it's more likely they're not going to have the resources to do more than these two, a few more stages and costumes.

I'd like to be wrong, but there's also a time table for them to likely be done at a certain point too. But I'd not count on it.

Personally I think there will be at least four left. No real reason why, it just seems like two is too small a number to me. Two more veterans and two more newcomers would be a nice balance, but who knows it will end up?

Not really sure what I want on the 3DS version, though Yoshi's Island Melee is a good choice.

From 3DS to Wii U, Magicant and Mute City are obviously the top picks, though I imagine uprezzing the former would take some serious effort (if that's the case, then Fourside at the very least). I'd love to see Yoshi's Island Brawl, too.

As for Wii U exclusives (or potentially both)...Sector Z, Fourside and Frigate Orpheon are probably my top picks. Fountain of Dreams and Shadow Moses Island are Wii U pipe dreams.

I'd say Rainbow Cruise/Great Bay, but we have enough Mario/Zelda DLC. Time to shake things up.

Frigate Orpheon
- Brinstar Depths
- Vs Ridley
- Sector 1
- Vs Parasite Queen
- Vs Meta-Ridley
- Multiplayer (Metroid Prime 2)
- Psycho Bits
- The Burning Lava Fish

Metroid's Smash 4 song selection truly is dire (barring the excellent Title arrangement).

SAVE US METROID PRIME THEMEEEEEEEEEE

The AI of Smash doesn't seem to fully understand swimming with a back pushing current.

I've seen it happen three times now when they just keep jumping once to get out, miss the edge and fall right back, into an endless loop that is either fixed by King of the Red Lions or the Tornado killing them.

For whatever reason they refuse to double jump

Welcome back, I didn't realized that you got unbanned by now.
Thanks. I was banned for a month because I hinted at the nature of MGSV's story. Didn't actually spoil anything, though.

Since coming back I've been nearly exclusively in the MGSV spoilers thread.

I freaking love that game. But yeah, this is not the place to discuss it, lol.

Man, what I wouldn't give to hear the Rundas/Gandrayda themes on there.

I read a theory in the announcement topic that they recycled music so as to conserve file space. Not sure if that's how it works, but if that's the case, I don't think Smash 4's Metroid music selection would excite me, lol. Can't they at least unabridged the Melee Brinstar theme?

Both Mario Maker and Pirate Ship forced their hand on the "no repeated songs" issue, because these two stages had to have repeated music.

They just couldn't go and not include SMBU and SMB3 Grasslands on the stage because they were already used, that would have been silly. And at that point, you're already making an exception for two songs, why not go all the way and just open it to everything and bulk the sountrack up a bit.

With Pirate Ship, the pickings for its original soundtrack were slim. Just Great Sea and Molgera, both direct rips right from Wind Waker. From that, they'd have to figure out how to plug the holes and try and replace the many remixes the stage had with rips from various games and try and make it all feel the same. Music is part of the identity of a Smash Stage, and having two Wind Waker rips as the only pieces of the original soundtrack wouldn't have worked.

Now I'm not really sure why Molgera didn't came back. That's a real puzzler. It's one song, and it's an iconic, well liked song. I'm sure they could have managed. Great Sea is easy because it has a remix on the stage already and for a lot of songs when they remixed them they cut the original.

Adding any music, requires localization of the song titles and the credits and possibly requires licensing (although Molgera wouldn't have).

I think ultimately, Pirate Ship was a neat little thing they did for fans. It was a super popular Brawl level and lots of people missed it dearly. But being Wii U only, obviously the resources can't really be expected to be allotted to filling an entire new soundtrack. As it stands I'm entirely impressed at the Omega for how amazing it is given it's a Wii U only stage.

And actually, I appreciate the re-used music on Pirate Ship. It works. For the 64 stages, they had only one song to bring back, so they needed to fill a soundtrack by default. But the Brawl stages came built in with soundtracks.

Mario Maker actually has a "normal" DLC soundtrack once you strip away all the repeated songs except the 2 grasslands.

- Changing Grassland
- Mario Maker Main Theme
- SMB Grassland
- SMB3 Grassland
- SMW Grassland
- NSMBU Grassland

That's 5 pieces of music, which is the same as Peach's Castle 64. So really, they only had to re-use two songs, but decided, what the heck, let's go all the way. And so we get cool stuff like SMW Bowser's Castle and the Airship theme that would have otherwise not been on the stage, but are iconic songs that are in Mario Maker,

It looks like Mario Maker just squeaked by on the 3DS

- No 3D (Duck Hunt also lacks 3D, apparently the only two stages that do?)
- Only two styles per round.
- Styles change slowly, probably to try and mask there's only two of them.
- No background enemies

That might be good about the styles changing more slowly, though. They changed 7 times in the 2 minute match I saw of the stage, and it seemed pretty jarring. I've made my strong opinions about Time Mode known; I only play Stock, and thus my matches with my friends usually go from 4-8 minutes. So that's 28 transitions in a good match.

Welcome back, man! He never left, man. He's just lying in wait, hiding in the grass like a... OH, I THINK I JUST GOT THAT!

Wait, Brinstar was butchered for the sake of Time Mode? How many songs must fall before Time Mode's bloodlust is quenched?

After listening to the Melee soundtrack religiously for 14 years I didn't notice Brinstar nor Pollyanna were cut.

So it doesn't seem like that big a deal.

I do wonder how they convinced Itoi to let them cut Pollyanna.

Considering the loop is 3 minutes long for Pollyanna, it couldn't be for 2 minute Smashes.

Pollyanna is the greatest Smash arrangement ever made, so you better believe it's a big deal.

'Course, I'm just glad it's in, but I don't like abridging Smash's arrangements. I can let it slide for rips like Crimean Army Sortie/Engage the Enemy since I see those as bonuses, but it feels like they're messing with Smash's legacy when they do the same for remixes.

I kind of hope Sakurai discusses why the heck they added Duck Hunt to Smash 3DS in Famitsu, even though he won't.

I'm not sure I follow why they bothered to add a port of a Wii U stage, at no cost, a year later with no advertisement or anything. It just appeared one day.

Did he feel bad the Wii U got Miiverse or something? A year of regret that Duck Hunt had no home stage? It's a super cool gesture and is appreciated, but it just seems weird.

Maybe pirate ship was going to be on both both they couldn't make it work and then duck hunt was the emergency back up.

The files indicate it was intended for both, but since they don't charge for Duck Hunt, why would it matter?

We've had patches before where the Wii U version by far got the most content (an extra stage, tourney mode, replay uploads) without anything extra to compensate on the 3DS.

But this time around, they got what was explicitly a "Plan B" stage. Tournament was never planned for the 3DS.

Why would they need a plan B? There's nothing that says the 3DS needs to get two stages.

A plan B would have been to scrap Pirate Ship and port a Brawl stage that works on both versions.

I think not talking about it is due to a direct being canned. Would be perfect to add "Oh and we didn't forget about 3DS fans. Duck Hunt is coming to the 3DS. And since we had Miiverse free for Wii U owners, we've decided to make it a free update for 3DS fans."

Curious- are there any rumors that have yet to be proven fake yet? A lot of them said we were getting a character this update so I'm assuming all of them were faked.

No "leak" that I can recall that mentioned Duck Hunt 3DS or Pirate Ship. People seem to only want to make fakes for characters, so we hardly ever get ones that mention stages without characters.

The only outstanding rumor is the Shovel Knight one, and it has another month or so before its shot down.

Yeah, 4 more characters sound good to me.

Already been confirmed fake by the data miners. I wish the fakers at least tried a little more than just copying legit leaks from the past.

Going back over my whining, I suddenly realize how many stages are just missing that one song to make the sound track list perfect.

Pyrosphere
-> Dark Samus Theme

Kalos Pokemon Theme:
-> Club Master Duel

Suzaku Castle
-> Guile's Theme

Dr. Wily's Castle
-> Central Highway - Opening Stage

The Halberd
-> Vs. Galacta Knight

Super Mario Maker
-> Mario Paint Medley

Luigi's Mansion
-> Ghostly Galaxy ~ Teresa Waltz || Ghost House

Pirate Ship
-> Molgera Battle

Port Town: Aero Dive
-> Title Theme - Sin and Punishment: Star Successor

Hyrule Castle 64
-> Hyrule Castle

I no longer have any faith in Sakurai with the soundtrack. Especially after today. :(

You're right, a single song would have made all the difference for those stages - though I'd hesitate to call Pyrosphere's selection anywhere near perfect even with the Dark Samus theme. Continuing on from that, a similar effect could have been achieved by adding:

Inferno ~ Lower Norfair Vocal Ver. [NORFAIR]
The Sky [SKYLOFT]
Dolphin Shoals [MARIO CIRCUIT]
Tragic Decision [GAUR PLAIN]
Lorule Castle [TEMPLE]
Second Armageddon [GREAT CAVE OFFENSIVE]
Final Map (Gaiden) [CASTLE SIEGE]
Life Returns [COLISEUM]
Busted Bayou [JUNGLE HIJINX]
Lockjaw's Saga Returns [KONGO JUNGLE]
Moonstruck Blossom [DREAMLAND 64]
Versus - Venom [ORBITAL GATE]

...and though it's a stretch:

Vs. Star Wolf (Starfox 2) [LYLAT CRUISE]

Sorry for the lack of links, I'm on mobile.

I just want Wolf.

Anyway, tell me the truth.

Let's assume PokéFloats didn't exist in Melee. Let's assume it came with Sm4sh, I wonder if people will be fond of it or will complain about it being too random and full of hazards.

I know it's up to SEGA but I still find it weird and terrible how little in the way of remixes Sonic has. At worst they could've just ported over most of Generations' remixes! Do kids even like most of the vocal tracks they saddled him with?

Also, has the newest patch been datamined yet? Curious if those two blank character slots after Ryu have changed at all.

if it came in smash 4 half the pokefloats would do damage and nearly instant-kill opponents

no we assume it's as it is

Sm4sh has plenty of harmless stages that only get "unused" because muh-walkouts, and I'm surprised Duck hunt isn't used a lot considering how safe it is.

The music selection for Pirate Ship is really disappointing.

They could have used Molgera, Molgera WWHD, Staff Roll aka the best damn song in Wind Waker, The Great Sea, Outset Island HD, Mid-Boss Battle, or even the goddamn Title Theme. They could have just ripped the tracks and it would have been awesome. Half of them were already in Brawl. It would have been simple and fast. What a half-assed lazy effort.

Probably the latter. My complaint is that I'm too busy admiring the balloons to fight properly. :) No really, I like looking at them.

Maturity, bitches.
Still see Miiverse as a base stage rather than a AoC stage. It was announced before launch and the files were already on the disc. Doubt it had anything to do with the Duckhunt port.

It would be pretty mixed IMO.

My main complaint would be "why does it only feature gen 1 and 2 pokemon?"'

Also, I don't know why anyone would complain about randomness or hazards when it has a set pattern which loops and there are no direct hazards.

My man!
But seriously, this is literally the only thing want from Sakurai.. or the game overall.

Pyrosphere is trash no matter how you try to slice it and Norfair is.. well.. it's Norfair.

Plus, Metroid is probably one of the biggest IP in the game with the most underwhelming stage selection. It needs more love.

C'mon Sakurai, you sob, you can do it!

I think Poké Floats is relatively fair. It's not good for heavier characters (not too good anyway), but it's not really random at all.

To contrast Orbital Gate Assault though, I found it obnoxious.

We need to see Upper Brinstar, Phenadra Drifts, and Tourian. Plant-based, ice-based, and mechanical-based.

The Phendrana Ice Temple, Artifact Crater or Ing Hive / Sanctuary Fortress would have been the Prime environments I'd have liked to see most. Skytown would lend itself to Smash well enough, but I'm not sure if it'd be the best addition to a roster already containing Skyloft, Skyworld and Palutena's Temple.
