Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

Don't have any really meaningful feedback to give, I suppose. It was a fun, fairly easy level. Well done. I think the vines helped with the feel you were going for.

Thanks :) I have to taken to trying to make my levels in an easy to medium difficulty pattern. Since Sky High Cargo Chase was quite a bit more difficult I opted to tone down the intensity.

Did you manage to find the extra area? I got a lot of good reception about keeping it a bit more hidden in my last course so I followed the same approach this time. If you look for it you will notice it is the only thing of many that has that design oddity.

Wouldn't mind submitting it for you. Is it the one you just posted?

Yeah. If you could that would be great :)

It is done! Yeah I think I found it. There were explosions. It made me wonder if the part earlier in the level could be exploded somehow too.

So I'm thinking I might pick this up as my Wii U is collecting dust and it looks like a good change of pace after MGSV. I know the reviews are all positive, but a game like this is defined after the review period so they're not too helpful. Now that the game has been out for a few weeks, how is the community shaping up? If I'm mainly interested in playing instead of creating, will I need to be typing in codes constantly or is it easy enough to find good levels within the game? Is the trash:quality ratio getting better now that everyone is sick of making stupid hard levels?

I actually would have wanted to but the brown tiles really stick out against the grey. I could have made the whole level brown granted to suit that look but I wanted to use the crates in the levels too. The first abandon building/room was also sorta a hint that another one you could enter was coming. Mainly just wanted to get across shit was old and falling apart.

Thanks for adding my code :)

Finding good levels to play with only the game as your method of finding them is seriously weak. Your best bet for finding good levels is through sources outside of the game itself. You can follow course creators in game, but it's not a very good system IMO. It doesn't even notify you when someone you're following has uploaded a new course. It just gives you a list of people you're "following" and you can check up on their list of uploaded stages. You'll very likely be typing in a lot of codes if you want to play good levels. 100 Mario Challenge can have a good course every now and then, but it has definitely not been my main source of fun with this game.

Here's a fun hard but not expert stage if anyone wants to try it out. Screenshot makes it look crazier than it is.

I bought it at launch, play a few levels, had a friend come over and play who has a Wii U but only uses it for smash, he loved it and bought the game from me, after 2 or 3 days I myself wanted to play again so I bought it again. Having lots of fun

If you are into Let´s Plays, Streams or the Videogame Media you can follow your favorite personalities, chances are they are in the game and have uploaded their own levels. Codes are a bit of a pain, but not that much once you start finding people you like to follow. If you find a level online you like you can go to played courses and see what else he has made. People are finding new ways to play every day, so it is worth it.

My latest level:

High and Dry Dock (759E-0000-0082-DAC4)

HJmj1tVl.jpg

kb7l5wml.jpg

xrhuLgWl.jpg

After taking the elevator up from Color-Coded Caverns Mario finds himself at the base of a tall tower. Mario must ascend and descend and ascend the tower, dealing with its bob-omb happy dry bones inhabitants to reach the exit at the top.

hTRI8uel.jpg

The tower is part of a dock supplying an airship fleet!

7b7LEqHl.jpg

This Yoshi-powered bob-omb machine is rather puzzling. Perhaps the yoshis can help.

Y5KZHPOl.jpg

And this level features a different kind of checkpoint from the last one I used. I modified it from a design I saw on Reddit. Hit the 3 correct ? blocks and then the p-switch and the way will open. Any wrong blocks will seal the path.

This level is a continuation of

Alright GAF. I'll be streaming GAF stages in roughly an hour at 9PM PST. Currently it's almost 8PM here.

Quote here for the submission link

You can see the sheet here for the ordering of which I'll play the stages: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1b1xdohjPl9skXcq6RGhVo49cY_zi0cY2aNVXMtjCQ80/edit?usp=sharing (For your view only. Please submit your stage through the quote link above please)

Hope to see you guys submit lots of stages for tonight and join me in stream :) It's always a hoot playing GAF stages and participate in chat with GAFers ! Again, have mercy on me GAF and don't give me kaizo stages. Intermediate to possibly hard stages is probably what I'm comfortable with, haha. Feel free to quote this for the next page so we get more GAFers submitting their stages ! Thanks...

Bwah, time to submit you to .!

alright, i'm home so voting for group 2 is closed! thanks to everyone who participated/voted

advancing to the next round (in alphabetical order): Belgian Dude, Boba2007, Kebiinu

the group 3 set of levels will be up later today!

Congrats to those moving on! It was tough competition.

As for my level, it was a mistake to not include an underground area as a deviation, and people said repeatedly I didn't do "enough" with the Spiny Helmet, but I wanted to keep it light, and not count on the player keeping it for too long, or having to go get a new one. I was kind of happy how the Muncher worked (a decent player avoids it, a newbie usually clips it because of the step up slowing your jump, learning about the hat removal), but wish there was just a way to remove hats without forcing damage.

Hey guys wanted to share the final installment of the Game and Watch Gallery stages.

Game and Watch Gallery 3

40CA-0000-0083-0549

This one was the hardest to try to recreate minigames in the same spirit of the original.. I tried my best, and I'm happy with how it came out, but I feel like it could use some tweaks

Also, you can't just play the third one!

There's no real gimmicks or anything. It's my attempt at a regular level, although it probably has a few more hectic enemies and hazards than a typical Mario level.

I was trying to make it not overly frustrating, while still exciting, and allowing for both methodical play and making it possible to rush straight ahead if you're competent enough. I also hope that it rewards exploration!

It's probably still a little too frustrating, and a little too unforgiving towards methodical play, so I'll have to work on it some more.

Another fun level, I like how you give a bob-omb tutorial on the first part, the second part provided some nice challenge but the whole flying around the rock in the second moving platform becomes pointless once you realize you can just run and jump, but its nice to collect coins. The boss battle with bowser was fun, but a bit frustrating since bowser can lock you out as seen in the video, the constant leafs falling fixes this, but it feels like the battle should be shorter and more focused. Maybe it was my mistake by running back so much? Other than that, its really good!

Hey! Thanks a lot for the feedback! I really appreciate it. Just watched you play it on Twitch. Yes, you can skip my volcano but you did fall down the first time you got greedy so it's still effective! :p
It's also there for effect since it could explain why there's an ice cave and then suddenly you are in this lava filled castle underground.

As for the boss battle, I really wanted to do something similar to SMB3's actual Bowser fight, meaning you have to destroy golden blocks to achieve something. The bombs are there to speed things up bit I know what you mean. It can be solved either way, though. When I played it I just kept throwing bombs in until I could fit through a hole but you could always try to stay inside and let Bowser smash through the ground for you while you grab another leaf from outside.
I could have replaced the bombs with stilettos so you can smash down yourself but in the end it would probably result in the same thing. It's hard to find a balance here I guess.
Again, thanks for playing and I'm glad you had fun!

There's platforming, three 1UPs and a boss fight. Nothing unfair. Just some good old-fashioned fun. Also, it has an active volcano!

Please give it a try and let me know what you think. I'll be playing more GAF levels tomorrow after work!

I tried to make it challenging but fair. And I really enjoyed designing the boss battle at the end, you'll never meet tougher moles! And you'll probably lose a few lives!

Enjoy :) Any feedback is appreciated!

Ooof, I'll be honest, that wall of spikes sapped my will to continue trying this level once I got to the top and found the Mole Chomp. I'll try to give some thoughts up to that point though.

The vertical camera in this game is not so good, and it shows at the beginning of your level. The first platform is okay, but to see where I needed to go off the second platform, I had to bounce-jump or walljump up twice to know where the ledge was, not a big deal, but a little annoying.

Similarly, I fell down into the conveyor area, and couldn't find a way back up to the Koopa apart from a walljump, onto an small and dangerous platform that I can't really see due to the camera, which killed me a couple times, when I missed the jump over on later attempts as well.

From what I could tell, if you kick the shell to the right, you get a mushroom, kick it to the left, you don't, which seems kind of mean and arbitrary. Not to mention the conveyors determined to dump the mushroom down the pit. Speaking of the pit, another camera issue means the jump down to the lowest level of conveyors is blind. I trusted in you to put a platform below me and you failed, and I was sad.

Lastly, I did not find that the wall jumping section is safe using momentum. I think this section is what will cause most people to quit. I'd strongly consider adding a second block of leeway for each jump.

This may come across a bit harsh, but given I didn't finish the level I felt the best feedback is why I chose not to continue attempts. The level really didn't motivate me to continue trying.

I've had the game for 2 weeks and I've only played it two times. I keep thinking about making some levels but I just don't know where to start. It's weird too because I usually make tons of levels in other games like N+, Trials, Meat Boy, etc.

To get screenshots press the Home button at the area you want to screenshot. Open up the WiiU web browser and go to imgur.com or similar image uploading site. Choose 'upload from computer'. You with then have a choice of uploading the screenshot from the tv or the gamepad.

Really sorry to see that German cannot join in on the Youtube live stream :( Maybe I should consider playing on Twitch next time but I expect that the chat will go even crazier since I have not set up any mod bot or anything on that. Cute level, excited, I liked the sense of urgency when switching door. In my second playthrough I realized I could just skip a lot of this by jumping jumping jumping, I don´t if this was intentional but I felt like a badass. Felt very dynamic.
.

Thanks for playing! The funny thing is that on BOTH runs you skipped pretty much half of the level. Shows I maybe need to sign post things better. You can:
1) Enter all the carriages through their chimneys.
2) Enter the engine through the long chimney and fight baby bowser
3) If you use an item in the engine room, you can go under the train in a passage.

Thanks for playing ! Will play your levels later tonight!

Finally uploaded this hell of a course.

Context: Donkey Kong Country was the first video game I ever owned. It's basically one of my favorite games of all time so I decided to make a homage to one of its more memorable levels on SMM. Here's a video of what the level is like.

In order to make the level, I had figure out 3 things: How to simulate the horizontally moving ropes, incenetivize the player to stay on the ropes, and recreate all the airborne hazards from that level.

For the first, I made a block vine on a track that is automatically hit with a ceiling buzzy beetle. The vine block always spawns after the buzzy beetle drops so that the player can't break the level. Vines on a track always grow to its maximum size so I make a low ceiling for the level.

For the second problem, I put spikes on the vine track so that the player always stays on the vines. This is because otherwise the block can still be ridden on, turning a challenging course into a cake walk.

For the third issue, I used saw blades in place of Zingers (those bee enemies) and Winged Blue Spike Tops in place of Neckys (those condor enemies).

The level is a bit of a challenge but I had fun making it. Ironically, I held off uploading this for more than a week until a Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong costume dropped from 100 Mario Challenge. I just got a Donkey Kong Junior costume so I made due with that instead. XD

Give it a shot and let me know how the course plays.

Motherfucker. I just figured out a way to make vines that grow from below a block. Now I'm currently remaking of this course. One that doesn't have spikes and actual bottomless pits. If only the 100 Mario Challenge would drop a Donkey Kong and/or Diddy Kong costume already.

I just played an un-loseable level in normal 100 Mario Challenge, this John Cena themed level called Tribute to a Legend that is so crappy as to be awesome. The code is 6A33-0000-0067-80E6 and I suggest you guys waste 15 seconds playing it. I actually laughed out loud at how lame it was.

Then I played a clever puzzle level called The Little Engine That Could (14BD-0000-007D-8C1C) that made me think but didn't make me laugh so I obviously don't recommend you bother.

It is chaotic, good chaotic really, with the possible exception of that late Thwomp over the pipe. On point though, I'm not sure if the Pow block in the subarea is meant to knock out the Thwomps, but the way it's set up flying and moving away from Mario means a lot has to go right for that to happen. Also do you have to abandon Yoshi once you leave there? That seems mean, poor Yoshi. Good stage though.

I tried to keep it simple and build on the main mechanic. It can become a little hard at the end, especially without a checkpoint. But i believe it to be fair enough.

Yesterday I played a Mario 100 challenge on Normal (I haven´t played it much as I usually play levels from Gaf when I´m not making them) and I was surprised at the really poor quality of the levels. I skipped another 10 levels or more so in total I played around 30 different ones. From all of them, I only found one worthy of a star. I usually give stars to levels that are designed well and are enjoyable, no need to be a masterpiece but just overall correct, fun and with no bs (cheap deaths, lots of enemies...). It really made me appreciate the quality of the levels here in GAF.

Also, please check Dry Bone´s Disposal Center 2.1 (9823-0000-0081-7E04):
Dry Bone´s Disposal Center 2.1 (9823-0000-0081-7E04) said:

Chapter 2: Rebirth
Mario goes into the Disposal Center, following the trail of the souls of the dead enemies. Through an horrific procedure, he witnesses the birth of the Dry Bones' army. Mario must go on, but he must deal with the guardians of this zone first...
This level relies on moving saws and bombs as the principal obstacles and features a final boss fight. The level features 3 passwords to let you advance from the beginning to different parts of the level.
I´ve completely redesigned this level, it´s much easier and clearer now and the boss fight is less chaotic.

You´re doing an awesome work with the site.

I´d only like to suggest something that encourages participation and discussion in the level page, maybe something like this:
  • Add a point to a user who rates a level from another user
  • Add another point to a user who comments on a level from another user
  • Allow users to vote +/- to other user´s comments
  • Add another option to sort levels by "reviewer points" where the levels are sorted by the author´s points (if the author has more than one level, one is chosen at random each time so only 1 level is listed by author).
.
This way, by reviewing lots of levels you can make your own more visible.
Every week, all user´s review points will be cut in half so there can be some changes in the top spots.
The current rating system will get much more feedback, while at the same time player´s who make an effort to review other´s levels gain visibility.

Hope you like the suggestion, I know it´s a lot of work but it would be cool.

Version 2.0 of my old Donkey Kong Jr. level. It's an accurate (as possible/reasonable) recreation of the arcade game with some tweaks to work with SMB physics and enemies. My biggest change from version 1.0 is a completely NEW FINAL STAGE complete with the same mechanics of the arcade of using the keys on the chains to unlock the platform. I'm really proud of how it all turned out and it's something that really has to be seen in action to really appreciate.

I hope you guys get to check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Minor changes since the last version:
- slight layout changes for to make certain jumps more manageable for SMB physics
- adjusting other layouts to more accurately portray the arcade gameplay hazards
- tweaking of enemy placement and enemy type to adjust difficultly
- difficulty curve/progression balanced
- 3rd stage revamped to make more challenging/interesting

I made a level inspired by one of the star world levels in New Super Mario Bros. U. The P blocks are quite generously placed, one of them might be hard to get to and there's also one jump that's a bit tricky. All in all I'm quite happy with the level and would love for you lovely people to test it out!

Time to play some GAF levels and to give feedback.

The Forgotten Facility
20B2-0000-0082-D759

Nice atmospheric level with a decent challenge. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the secret you've teased about. Hopefully, I'll find it the next times I'll play it.

Battle of the skies
A15C-0000-0082-EDE9

So many tries. I don't know, the first part seemed a bit too difficult, tending towards frustrating. Also,
I don't get what's the purpose of the P Switch, since you can climb on the vine by jumping on the ? block while the Star's effect is still going, maybe I missed something
. Not a bad level per se, just too frustrating IMHO.

High and Dry Dock (759E-0000-0082-DAC4)

Great level. This is the first time I play one of RagnaroX's levels, and I can definitely see how inventive this user is. Good puzzles, and the checkpoint password concept is great. I'll surely try other levels of yours in the future, following you now :D

Mushroom Romp
92BC-0000-0082-F953

Interesting level, it feels good to play overall.
The underground segment has a sudden difficulty spike, it surprised me
. Neat level indeed.

I have another problem. I made this level some time ago and thougth I would try a few more. I have now completed 2 more, but I am not really happy with them. The first one has fire as a theme. I think that's the better of the two, as it still somewhat works as a dungeon. The second one has water, and had I really good idea for a puzzle/challenge at the beginning that worked quite well. But as a reward (and in order to progress), you got this shell helmet. It worked somewhat, but since you now can't take damage from above anymore I had to use stuff like spikes and jumping Piranha Plants just to get threats. And since the next reward was the spike helmet... well, the "end challenge" is basically just mass amounts of enemies and obstacles. It's boring, but I have no idea what to do underwater with this spike helmet as "equipment".

Some of the new mechanics are just game breaking, meh. :/

Highlighting one of the levels I most enjoyed to this date:
2124-0000-0052-978D - Piranha temple

Talking about curation, GAF, what are the top eight levels (not being yours ;) ) you most enjoyed to this date?

The Doctor
(65D7-0000-0082-F00F)

Daleks... Cybermen... Weeping Angels...

Can you survive a day in the life of The Doctor?
Oi! Watch it, Spaceman!
The Dalek interpretation especially was beautiful, while the Angels were a perfect fit of course.

My latest level:

High and Dry Dock (759E-0000-0082-DAC4)

After taking the elevator up from Color-Coded Caverns Mario finds himself at the base of a tall tower. Mario must ascend and descend and ascend the tower, dealing with its bob-omb happy dry bones inhabitants to reach the exit at the top.
Beautiful work with the puzzle mechanics and thematic aesthetics again! I didn't get the back tracking part at first and thus ran out of time, thanks good guy checkpoint system for your help.
Only a bit too easy for my taste, but as we know it's probably better this way than the other.

Uggggh I can't get my Bowser level to work the way I want. I uploaded it anyway if anybody is following me, I'd love to know what you think. But it's not as polished as my other levels. I think I have to redesign it completely.... again :(

Played some gaf stages over the last few days:

Game & Watch Gallery

Nice, really liked oil panic and man hole. Octopus and Fire not so much. Cool use of soundeffects!

Mole Station

I liked it until the precise wall jump bit. Can't give a star for this man :(

Another Toad in the Wall

Nice puzzles, maybe a bit on the short side. Love the ending tune you made :).

Introduction Remix

Well it is more interesting. You did a great job improving the stage, the underground needs some tweaks tho. It has a bit too much enemies and stuff to do in underground, which doesn't sync that well with the overworld imo.

Mystery House Climb

I love these little challenges, the SMW is still my favorite. Good rewarding ending as usual. Keep up the good work!

Thwomp Romp

Thwomps are so good. Missed a few secrets in my first run, well played sir. I like this stage a lot. Also I played more of your stages Jholmes :)

Don't forget to check out some of my stages:

http://www.mariomakerhub.com/makers/Thuddert

I'll revise a few of them soon. I don't have a lot of ideas on what to do next, but I definitely learn a lot by playing or seeing people play stages in streams. Maybe I'll just finish my Mushroom World 1, a bit on the safe side hehe. Thanks for the feedback and stars I have received from my fellow gaffers :).

Woah you actually have a remarkably similar setup as me with my stream now ! I finished my NeoGAF stream earlier and I too have the Google Form thing combined with uneditable Google Spreadsheet for viewer to see. Then I colour code the level as I see fit :D Great minds think alike !

Waiting for your stream, friend ;) Also, check out my (and Naar's) latest stream's level submission setup ! You can do the same with your stream and it's honestly about as professionally done as it can be :D Hopefully Youtube Gaming starts getting some third party app going as well if it can... then we can have bots and stuff. Or maybe they should just switch their chat to IRC and it'll be perfect. When I stream Mario Maker now there's always some jerks start saying offensive words in chat... why does this game attract trolls ? Haha

Sent mine, hopefully it'll be a good level to play on a stream despite the quite low difficulty, since it's a 1-1 level. There are main and sub-challenges, though. Maybe those could make the level more exciting for this kind of stream.

This one is a bit sadistic, but I want to watch people play it. :)

Also your streams go offline a lot.

3-4 Sunken Cargo Ship
3EB8-0000-0083-94F5

The "story" from 3-3 continues, with some of the vessels (3-3 was an airship level) now sunken. 3-4 being the second underwater level now is quite a bit harder than the first. The beginning is probably the hardest part, with many enemies and cannons shooting everywhere. After that, it's a fairly normal underwater level, more enemies than 3-1, but nothing too hard. Next up will be the final level of world 3, the third castle.
