Does most of Sales-GAF feel Super Mario Maker is severely under performing?

Week 1: MK8 - 325.892 Splatoon - 144.818 SMM - 138.242
Week 2: MK8 - 73.051 Splatoon - 68.913 SMM - 54.544
Week 3: MK8 - 42.261 Splatoon - 53.198 SMM - 52.396
Week 4: MK8 - 28.112 Splatoon - 43.653 SMM - 30.150

It's not doing as well as Splatoon and MK8 but than again Splatoon might end up the best selling Wii U game in Japan, while MK8 had a huge first week. I personally didn't expect SMM to do as well as it has in Japan. I always though it would be bigger in the West. I guess the bundled sales are helping with the leg work.

Another big mobile game to watch.

Does most of Sales-GAF feel Super Mario Maker is severely under performing?

I feel duckroll really nailed it when he said that brands are only as good as what people like about them. Once you move past that, the brand is only an attention getter for what is otherwise going to be judged as a new product. If the product is something that piques people's interest, that's great, but it's far from guaranteed.

Mario Maker is not a 2D platformer, it's a game creation toolkit. That's going to have pretty limited appeal in comparison. In that regard, this is about as well as I could have imagined it doing.

Similarly, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is not something that really captures what people love about Pokemon, and thus the sales vastly different from mainline entries.

Something like Yokai Watch Battlers fits in very well with the brand since battling is a core part of the IP's fantasy. I'm expecting the Koei Tecmo game to do vastly worse than it.

How have previous Chibi-Robo games done?

GC one: 97,879
DS one: 160,376
Wii one (new play control): 38,573
DS second one: 138,733

I'm expecting less by this one. seems pretty average under many points of view, marketing push especially (and we saw that putting a bundle amiibo on the market maybe can help, but not that much, with Yoshi on Wii U).

About Super Mario Maker so far has been in line with my expectations: I've always found the "million mark easily" not that easy at all. it could arrive there (is selling good imho), thanks to the bundle, but it's not as hot as Splatoon imho.

Chibi-robo will open <20k, in my opinion. The appeal of another platform game from an IP that was quite unique in its gameplay on Nintendo platforms should be quite limited.

This sure is some PlayStation domination this week, even if thanks to multiplatform releases.

Its only a handful of actual games (and Tearaway somewhere...), and then some of them performed absolutely terribly but still count as multiple releases.

Guess what game just got delayed once more..... Yup, Kancolle Vita.

February 18th now.

Ok now, what major 3DS game will come out on February 18th, I wonder? ;)

This is never coming out.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but with the price cut, the PS4 has finally crossed streams with Wii U.

So late 2016 seems about right as was predicted, though the WiiU getting axed for the NX may speed it up depending on when the announcements hit.

Well, SMM can be seen by many as a 2D platformer - Nintendo marketing stressed the fact that you can play user-generated levels, and those levels already available in the game itself. Also - you can play levels created by yourself.

In that regard, the game is selling nicely - it's already higher than Super Mario 3D World and might push it close to the million mark if holidays will help software sales.

It's not clear how it will do in the long run yet (and won't be for a while), but Monster Hunter Explore has managed to shaken off the "This seems like a disaster out of the gate." status.

Yeah, I do think it's quite smartly made for what it is.

The context we'd have to view it from for the statement "Does most of Sales-GAF feel Super Mario Maker is severely under performing?" to make sense though is in comparison to a 100% traditional Mario 2D platformer, which I don't think is the best fit for assessing it.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
The fact that SMM doesnt have the multiplayer mode introduced with NSMB Wii is already a big disadvantage for many people. NSMB U and 3D World more or less established the fact that Nintendo Mario Plattformers can be played coop with multiple friends...

Mario Maker is a core player oriented spin-off but no replacement for a standard Mario Plattformer for the broader audience. Considering what it all took for NSMB U, a WiiU launch title) to sell up to a million i would say Mario Maker is doing more than ok. NX Port is a given at this point anyway.

PS: That Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Yokai Watch comparison is also weird...completely different type of games. Thats like comparing Kingdom Hearts to Fire Emblem.

Technically this has a different kind of multiplayer: the create vs. play multiplayer. But the rest of what you said is fine.

I would propose that to a large extent playing Mario Maker is a completely different experience to playing 2D Mario.

On the creation side, obviously it's nothing like playing 2D Mario.

On the user level front, you're having a high concentration of frustration platforming, which I feel is a very large departure for Mario, and self finishing levels, of which I would say the same.

That's the kind of stuff that is going to be in the word of mouth.

The only thing comparable is the levels Nintendo shipped themselves, but that hasn't really been the focus of the marketing message.

Well - furthermore YW Busters was actually a game mode in YW2 so people were already familiar with that anf Busters tapped into those gamers who wanted more. This shows, though, how strong is YW right now (MD entries were selling A LOT back then).

I don't know how Busters compares to the regular YW games, but while Mystery Dungeon is one of the higher quality Pokemon spin-offs, it's still Mystery Dungeon, which is much harder and more niche than regular Pokemon games. Now that they're a known factor, I don't think it's too surprising that interest has dropped for that subseries. How well do non-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games sell?

Dont think its a consensus. Dont know why the game became a laughing stock either. I think it will do better than xenobomba. It actually looks fun and its launching in a much bigger week. I will get this one.

I see. Most seem to expect that it will do poorly, but I also believe Genei Ibun Roku will perform better than Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Limits on registration are being lifted in a day or two so it should perform even better in the near future.

As far as I know, Shin Megami Tensei IV Final is February 10th, and it's the furthest on time.

That game will make KanColle flop hard, no jokes.

Is selling amazing. Will easy break 1 million mark in Japan, i'm gonna say 1.2 million.

Given the fact it's bundled, the million is a lock; but when everything is said and done, not that fast.

Kancolle was originally supposed to release the same day as Dragon Quest VIII.

Then a day before Monster Hunter X.

Now it's coming a week after SMTIV Final and a little more than a week before the Pokémon 20th Anniversary.

Maybe it'll be further delayed to release alongside Yokai Watch 3 next.

Consensus is, I think, it's doing/holding well and will be helped by end year sales.

I always thought people were being overly optimistic on it =/
This is about what I expected.

As far as I know the most optimistic predictions is the 1M+ a few posts above, which isn't a crazy prediction depending legs post end year. I think if there's one area where the game could be "underperforming" is when comparing its system selingr power to Splatoon.

Well, that's what i think haha, even Mario Kart pass 1 million only after one year, Splatoon should pass 1 million only after 30-35 weeks or so (w digital).

I think Mario Maker will pass 1 million by end of 2016, Meanwhile, Splatoon and Mario Kart should be at 1.5 million at that point.

Yeah and when development is still a clusterfuck by the time the new season starts, they might as well delay it for another year until there's another season right? Maybe move it to another platform by then! Not like anyone really cares. Lol.
