Oblivion sold less than those games and ended up with 20+ million for Skyrim. It was a comically ridiculous growth for the franchise.

I'm assuming this is built almost entirely into the developer's reputation, but I could be wrong. It took quite a while for Skyrim to hit over 20 million, but it was something like 7 million week one followed by 12 million at the end of the year.

Good point about Oblivion to Skyrim.

I always forget about Bethesda and what happened with Skyrim. Will be interesting to follow this game actually!

I still don't see it doing as well (20m+), but I can certainly see it doing well within its own right. I just don't think Fallout 4 will take off in a way like Skyrim did.

September edition of my Leg-o-Meter. Minecraft still climbing and finally overtook AC: New Leaf (MK8 is next?). Without Minecraft, Nintendo platforms would be holding first 15 spots. Most leggy PS game is Taiko Drum Master (only one which managed to stay 10 weeks in the Top 20).

It's the same engine and toolkit that the community has been using from game to game since Morrowind.

To illustrate this a bit:

Fallout: New Vegas: Owners: 3,974,633 ± 46,869
Fallout: New Vegas: Owners: 484,381 ± 16,472
(one of those two is GOTY edition)

Skyrim was at 8 million prior to its free weekend.

Fallout 3 flags as Owners: 1,868,097 ± 32,263 + Owners: 554,398 ± 17,620, but a lot of its sales were not on Steam.
The hype surrounding Fallout seems kind of different than Skyrim's. I'm guessing it's due to being less impressive compared to titles being released around the same time than compared to Skyrim. I'm still expecting to do like 7-9 million but the LTD being like 15 million

It's a much less jarring transition if we view Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas as transitory steps, which is what much of my argument rests upon, since it's kind of odd for those to blow up completely independently unless much of the core market really does have awareness of who is developing a game.

The biggest hurdle to me is that open world games are now extremely common, but I do think they don't necessarily have much direct competition this Fall. Almost every other super major title is a multiplayer centric FPS title sans Assassin's Creed.

If the game were actually ready to launch for the November date, it would launch. Delaying it at this point will hurt it more than any sort of cross media benefit from the anime. What is there to gain from releasing it now? How about not losing pre-orders and retailer confidence? :p
They're well past that point, we're in a "whatever, I'll buy it when it's ready" state, not "fuck, another delay". I doubt the umpteenth delay is gonna affect it in any way.
And I'm not assuming that it's actually ready right now and they're purposely waiting but there's really no downside at this point, considering, as I said, the inevitable collateral exposure of the anime.

This is part in what I meant with Skyrim being a perfect storm. It was, at the time, a bit of a snowflake vs. if it had come out today.

What Nintendo's line-up for the West this holiday?

Wii U: Animal Crossing, Xenoblade X, Mario Tennis
3DS: Zelda, Yokai Watch, Pokemon MD

Did I miss anything? It's terrible, and with the price-cut in motion for Playstation 4 and Microsoft's impressive line-up and capital allocation, Nintendo will be lucky to even have a million seller from combining two titles.

Holiday period usually represents 60% of Nintendo's sale volume - it's scary.

That said, Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed have shipped very similar products for nearly a decade and continually achieve incredibly high sales. They also both went up for a while before going down, and AC in particular goes like a rollercoaster around the 10 million mark.

My original point was that instead of looking at it as a "well they don't have anything to lose at this point" perspective, I see it more as a "and what makes them think it will be ready to release in Feb 2016?" thing. Lol.

Maybe they are delaying KanColle Vita so it won't impede on KanColle Android lol

besides the whole of course its not finished yet

Yeah, it's pretty sad. Losing Zelda, and then losing Star Fox, really fucked NOA over and they have pretty much no good options left for a marquee Black Friday launch. And that empty 3DS schedule is just embarrassing, they really should've pushed up Fire Emblem or brought over Rhythm Heaven or something.

Agreed.

I don't think Zelda 3DS is going to do well either.

Nintendo's 3DS forecast is at 7.6 million (1 million already sold in Q1 - largely due to the n3DS, new hot product in that time frame).

There's no incentive to buy a 3DS this holiday season whatsoever judging by that line-up. It's going to be bad.

Well, unlike Wii U, 3DS actually has 3rd party support. That said the support is mostly niche Japanese stuff so it probably doesn't make a huge difference either.

Who knows how they get to 7.6m? Maybe they think regular n3DS soft launch and 2DS price drop can carry them in NA?

they won't. they will revise the forecast to something more realistic later like they always do.

They'll most likely bring it down to 5.6, 2 million less.

Nintendo's mobile game is expected to launch in Q4 too right?

I think a much bigger hurdle is that's it is not a fantasy game and doesn't carry that audience with it. A post apocalyptic theme just doesn't appeal in the same way.

It's certainly not one game being developed. Though I'm not sure if they are launching mobile with one game in the quarter. Could easily be a couple.

I'm not sure a wartorn shooter RPG is actually seen as having less audience potential than a fantasy melee RPG, at least in the West.

If we're talking about Japan or China, that strikes me as a much larger hurdle then.

It doesn't pull much of a female audience while fantasy RPGs often do. It just gives it a wider reach. I just don't see Fallout doing much better than the older ones and I'm much more of a fan than Skyrim which I didn't even buy.

DeNA IR documents mention one title reserved for FY16, but subject to change of course.

There hasn't been much info sadly, we'll see soon enough at the end of the month. An update on QOL would be nice too - I think the project was put on hold since the passing of Iwata. Too much to do and Nintendo had to get it's house in order before committing to anything else.

Nintendo did say they had five games planned currently. I believe the timeframe was until the end of the next fiscal year.

I think they'll space them out a bit.

What intrigues me is the financial breakdown for Pokemon GO's revenue.

Nintendo holds publishing & distribution rights to the Pokemon IP for traditional games (except Japan where Pokemon Company is the publisher) - revenue generated from the sale pass through Nintendo's financials.

Now, the situation is reverse for mobile where TPC is the publisher for Pokemon GO, and Nintendo is an acting partner (watch), so technically speaking, the revenue generated through mobile earnings are TPC's alone.

It's a serious dent to Nintendo's earnings in the long run if mobile proves to be a successful venture for the property (a portion of TPC's profits are most likely distributed via dividends - but that's to 3 parties, as oppose to 1).

I'd argue that Nintendo's most valuable asset is Pokemon, and the above may prove to be quite complicated for the company.

Exactly that is. That's why I suppose that if Wii U sells below 10k during this year from now, it has to be within the next two or three weeks, because November, even they are low-tier, presents a good amount of Wii U software that can potentially be in the top twenty.

I think this is the Wii U release slate for the rest of the year in Japan?

11/05/2015 - Lego Jurassic World
11/12/2015 - Disney Infinity 3.0
11/12/2015 - Art Academy Retail
11/18/2015 - Monster Hunter Frontier G9
11/19/2015 - Puyo Puyo (Best Price)
11/19/2015 - Ginsei Shogi: Kyoutendo Toufuu Raijin
11/21/2015 - Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (Nintendo)
11/26/2015 - Taiko no Tatsujin: Atsumete Tomodachi Daisakusen (Bandai Namco)
12/05/2015 - Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version (Level 5)
12/26/2015 - Genei Ibunroku #FE (Nintendo)
Also, in 12/03 there's a new pack of Dragon Quest X all in one.

And Mario Tennis, god knows when

It's interesting to see how much different Wii U and PSV are in terms of software sales given how similar they are in hardware sales. The former has few releases but much more concentrated sales while the latter is living thanks to nicher and more spread releases. This is really the extreme representation of how different Nintendo and Sony have been throughout the years.

Battle for the king of western titles on Q4 (COMG)

Call of Duty Black Ops 3 - 32pt
Star Wars Battlefront - 24pt
Fallout 4 - 22 pt

Fallout reduced the gap from SW, while CoD already holds steadily the top spot

7th Dragon III on 3DS is also at 103pts on Comgnet. Progress was really slow this past week after some really good momentum in the prior week, basically after the demo hit. Anyone heard of any reception to the demo in Japan?

Going by Mpl90's numbers, the original on DS was at 96pts just prior to release(?) and 2020 was at 150pts right before release also. I couldn't find the total for 2020-II but considering it had the lowest opening and LTD, I'd assume it was lower than 96pts.

Very interesting battle haha. Still think we will see COD > SW > Fallout, but is funny see the COMG chart.

FW (Famitsu):

7th Dragon: 81.536
7th Dragon 2020: 113.568
7th Dragon 2020-II: 76.949

2020-III might open between 2020-II and 2020, in my opinion.

Yeah, they certainly are two ends of the spectrum (one being almost solely propped up by first party; the other solely propped up by third party) and it's very interesting to watch.
