Sony: 'No plans to dial back third-party deals in 2016'

3rd party titles sell consoles, and I think it was Jack Tretton or Jim Ryan said "when you've got the sales, it's easier to get yes responses for internal projects."

Great news. With several first party games, third party should give them a constant monthly stream of the best games available.
2016 will be a huge year for PS4 and its owners.

So it's not a possible outcome for Sony's traditional game development to be affected by some first parties focusing on VR over traditional games? Sorry, but when I see Sony looking for third party deals, I get reminded of this summer/fall where they had no heavy hitters of their own.

Which first party studios are focusing on VR? Guerrilla Cambridge(for now), the new VR studio that recently opened and what else? Games like GT Sport and Dreams being VR compatible does not constitute a focus on that platform. Do you have some evidence that the lack first party games this Fall is connected to a focus on VR in any way? There is simply no information available that justifies this concern.

This isn't information, it's marketing.

Even if Sony were, for some inexplicable reason, planning to "dial back third-party deals" in 2016, why would they say as much? This is like asking a politician "Do you plan to dial-back supporting hospitals" and then reporting it as news when the answer is "No". What a pointless article. Congrats to MCV on first-tier shilling.

Yes, I agree. Great for the people who get it "early," but annoying for the rest.

It is. Used to irk me seeing Don Mattrick stand there smugly announcing it. Now Sony's dong the same thing with the timed DLC stuff, it's shit in my opinion but if it's helping them move software and hardware they won't care.

Well they have a sizeable first party lineup next year so I don't see the issue. If it sells their system, of course they are going to do it. Anyone in their position would.

Of course they won't. It's business after all, the only thing Sony and MS care is your wallet

3rd party deals were very lucrative for Sony. They've really been picking the winners since before the sales gap was so large.

Watch Dogs, Destiny, Arkham Knight partnerships have all lead to sales boosts to Sony's platform despite being multiplatform.

In comparison MS had deals for COD:Ghosts and AW, Evolved, Madden, and Assassins Creed Unity... Not exactly titles that got people excited

I have been saying this. If PS4 still holds strong this holiday with no exclusives, Sony wont battle against TP giants and wont put the exclusives in october/november in the coming years. This is how I feel at least

I don't like the the whole "pay money to keep content away from other platforms" thing. It doesn't add value to their customers and instead takes away value from others. To be clear I'm not talking about paying money to make indie ports happen on PS4, that's cool they should continue doing that. I'm talking about paying money to secure extra stuff from AAA games that would happen regardless.

Of course but all I ask for is a little consistency with this sort of stuff. I agreed with the criticism MS got for it, money that could of went into something more productive long term and the only ones I have saw in the media pull Sony up over this is Metro and their interview with Jim Ryan. If it's bad for one it should be bad for the other, that's all I'm saying.

The sales, software attachment rate due to those sales, bundles offered, marketing, and the fact that as you said... they shift their first party away from the TP holiday battle, makes them very appetizing to publishers as a whole.

That sounds nice and all, but if one party doesn't do the deal the other one will. It would be great if the practice ended, but it seems too ingrained now. These publishers expect assistance promoting their games.

Uncharted was delayed and SSM had a cancelled title that may have been expected to release this fall. Next year doesn't look like it will be a repeat though, unless TLG and Horizon miss release.

I really don't understand what you said

Couldn't care less so long as the first party games come and 2016 looks insane. GT Sport and UC4 alone will keep me happy for the year.

Yeah this is so true. Seems like Sony have a very good eye at identifying the titles that make PS4 a bigger part of the gaming zeitgeist.
MS mostly have a couple duds but Fallout 4 should do them good.

If you're referring overall to the Jim Ryan quotes, I think he's mainly talking about marketing/promotional deals.

But yeah exclusive trinkets are bullshit.

I agree last gen Microsoft was evil corp and paying for 3rd party exclusives was awful. Now people are thanking Sony in This thread lol. I have both systems so it doesn't hurt me I just don't like the practice. It sucks to see one group get excluded or have to wait for content like the cod map packs.

But it works I'm getting cod on PlayStation for the first time so I guess you can't argue with results.

I remember when Microsoft announced Rise of the Tomb Raider during E3 last year and i believe CD actually got death threats from people and in general people seemed mad at MS, but the thing is...Sony does exactly the same. Maybe even worse really.

It's all good with me though. Next year i'll be adding the PS4 as well and then i'm done. Well...unless NX is going to be worth it.

ps4 is going to dominate the home console world, there is no doubt about that. What I am afraid of is the NX coming into the market and crashing and same with the xbox new .

Quite the awaking from the old ways

Their business is to enable their partners, not to compete against them

They sign the deal they don't have to put anything in, CDPR for instance only compromised by putting something extra in the XBO CE. Which was still bullshit.

At least publishers have went on to make the betas timed exclusives instead of content that's honestly the lesser evil of all the options.

I wasn't on GAF back then, but wasn't the main complaint that MS didn't have many studios of their own, while they were so heavily invested in third party deals? I see similar worries about Sony regarding how they're money would be better spent in this very thread, so the concern isn't totally inconsistent. Of course, there will always be people that try to paint one or more of the console manufacturers as pure evil, unfortunately.

Yup, I love Sony moneyhat CoD and Battlefront timed exclusive and force Xbone version delay to next year
