Tales of Berseria trailer #2

Looks like a last gen game alright but at least it's going to be 60fps. Star Ocean 5 eats this up graphically despite also being cross gen and having more characters on screen.

JRPG trend of having young boys
The past 3 games have had young and non-sexualized female characters, so I assume this is just someone's idea of trying to balance it out. It's going to be incredibly hard to better Edna as a character in this position, though.
just because she shows some skin doesn't make her a slut

smh
Uh. Did anyone say this? Tales games are sorta 50-50 on this. For every instance a character looks completely natural there's an opposing one wearing something ridiculous. There are always costumes, anyway, so this isn't something anyone is actually actually worried about. I'd venture that it'd be hard to find a single GAF member that would be entirely turned away from this game based solely on the MC's outfit. It's okay to want things!

Despite having zero evidence or logic to back up this guess, I'm not feeling terribly confident in SO5's technical prowess.

Wait the cat ear lady in Ni No Kuni 2 reveal was a boy ?? I was sure it was a girl. Alright colour me surprised.

JRPG trend of initially fooling me into thinking said young boy was actually a girl.

No joke, until this post I thought first pic was a girl.

You're not alone lol.
It's a trend from anime nowadays.

Judging from the trailer, he's not. He told Velvet to fight, not "K-Killing people is bad"

I hope so.
Yeah he looks okay, judging from the trailer.

My god are they dishing these out yearly now? The quality is diminishing, they should really take their time with these games..

Also is Motoi Sakuraba composing again? I worry his music is getting dull with each new installment...

Really hope this turns out better than Zestiria. I love Symphonia, Vesperia and Graces, but everything afterward I couldn't get into.

It'll probably be almost 2 years from Zesty in Japan by the time Berseria actually hits. It just feels really fast here because we got XIllia, Xillia 2 and Zesty in quick succession. Their releases were spread further out in Japan.

Tri ace is on a different level technologically as well as budget wise. Not even the same situation.

Blame Bamco

hopefully Triace can use some of that to fix princess bubblegum's face ayyy

The last one came out January 22nd 2015 in Japan. The one before that was November 2012 in Japan.

Honestly with the development pipeline they probably have in place with the PS3 still present, they probably have making the games down to a science for now.

It's also nice we got a translated Tales game less than 1 year from original release for once too. We're finally catching up.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.

You're joking right? 😂

Star Ocean 5 looks really generic with bland environments and tragic character faces looking no better than a mid level PS3 game. Bersaria (and Zestiria) arguably have better character models and better looking art direction.

I think Bamco stopped giving Tales team enough budget after Vesperia didn't sell as well as they wanted it to. All the Tales games after Vesperia seemed to have lower budget..

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

I have a legit question though: are Star Ocean games, as individual units, more popular worldwide than Tales? All the info I can get is that Star Ocean 2 and Star Ocean 3 sold over 1m worldwide each. Not sure about 4 though.

I would love to see them given enough budget to do proper texture and detail work, but I don't necessarily want to go back to Vesperia scale again. The larger world and traversable world map really didn't add anything to me except more annoying travel time.

Vesperia likely had some Microsoft money going to it.

Then they tried to make excuses for the worse looks of further games by claiming it was a choice and not just Namco not giving them money.

On the comment, yes, people are referring to her as a slut and stripper its funny but at the same time I don't know if they're being serious or joking.

I actually liked some of the environments, I'm shocked. Combat looked cool, but nothing interesting was really shown.

I'm kind of concerned that our first two party members are slut demon and angel baby, but whatever, it's anime.

So a stripper and a cute shotaro boy get on a boat

It seems like they're coming out a bit more frequently just because we were playing catch up with Graces through Xillia 2, all of which we got like 3 years after Japan, whereas there was a two year gap for them between Xillia 2 and Zestiria.

Also, this is actually a better pace than they were back around the 10 anniversay, where Rebirth, Legendia, and Abyss all came out within the span of a single year.

Vesperia wasn't any different, it just had a more colorful artstyle and an overworld, along with fixed camera angles in towns.

Xillia tried to go more detailed with the character models with higher poly counts, as well as try a full 3D perspective for exploration, which merely introduced its own faults.

If you don't have the technical or budgetary chops for that, its gonna hurt.

It feels more common because 1) There was a sequel game made that messed with the typical cycle, and 2) The localizations started very delayed and have slowly caught up. It's not yearly. It just feels like it for now. Really we're still recovering from the awkwardness that was Tales of Graces on originally-not-a-Playstation. Its original Wii release was 2009 but we didn't see it in NA for over 3 years. There's a timeline on the series' Wikipedia entry that shows that we're actually spread out better than in the past.

Edit: Answered en mass above as well.

well, maybe next time that they switch to UE4 (like duh who isn't? right) it would look good finally. Character designs are completely awful this time around lolz. and that music... really?

60fps - nice
2016 - really? thought they said the game was like 10% done last trailer and everyone figured it was 2017.
Cheap - yeah, still looks like Zesteria...wait, in fact it looks exactly like Zesteria, full of asset re-use, including the same races and even knight design. Uh, remember that Zesteria DLC sequel tease? Yeah, pretty sure this is Zesteria-2 like Xillia-2 but they're just not calling it that. Maybe takes place like hundreds of years later or something. Could be why they're not showing much of the playable cast yet...

Yes. But there's only been 4 Star Oceans, the last one having been more than 6 years ago, so it doesn't even compare.

I do think part of the problem is the different art direction they decided to take after Vesperia. Instead of going traditional cell-shaded look of Vesperia, Grace/Xillia/Zesitira/Berseria have their unique (and weird) looking artstyle approach. The problem is that it's very controversial, and look so washed out compared to colorful style of Vesperia.

But Vesperia was super ambitious, at least for Western market.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Looks nice, the battles really do look like Zestiria but it's still early to say for sure.

I wonder why they decided to go with cross-gen. I'm sure this one will sell better on the PS4 than PS3 even in Japan

I'm not sure why you'd think that, unless you think sales will disappoint and decline again.

Percentages don't really seem to mean much, I think when Star Ocean 5 was announced they said it was only 30% complete but it's already coming out in March.

Velvet looks badass. And the hug moment was nice. Really liking what she seems like so far.

Liked the brief looks at some of the other characters.

The music was hype I thought and I really like the idea of plenty of scenes on the ship. Hopefully that'll be our ship to use regularly during the game. Having a non-human guy at the wheel there was kinda cool.

Can't wait.

I really hope the dark haired woman is the main character, she looks awesome.

Other that Milla in Xillia 1 (and even then you could pick Jude), I don't think it's happened in Tales before so I won't get my hopes up though.

They already confirmed that the black haired girl is the main character.

She is, that was the first thing they announced about the game when it was revealed. Hell, she's even in the logo.

What's wrong with the music? It actually sounds good. For Sakuraba Tales.

Velvet is 100% the protagonist. She was announced as such when the game was first revealed and her silhouette is even part of the logo.

Hmmm. Polarising game I presume?

Zesty is a real weird one. Good cast. Combat has some good ideas, but ends up feeling a bit half baked in a lot of key areas. Story is really oddly disjointed. Skill system is downright garbage. I liked the game overall, but it definitely feels like there were development issues.

Looks very similar to Zestiria visually.

Just lower res ;)

Oh, I'm glad I'm not the only way who see it that way.
I thought there's something with my eyes after reading posts like 'looks better than Zestiria'. But it's expected as the game is being prepared to release so early next year.

My only hope is that they fix the camera this time.

Compared to the Tales games that came before it? Definitely ambitious for their first 7th gen game, and it paid off in quality.

Although i liked Xillia 1 and 2, its just been downhill since Vesperia. I'm hoping this darker direction they are taking Berseria helps.

What i've seen so far seems pretty decent. Glad they've brought back 60fps and stuff like that. They need a cast that is not annoying. This kid doesn't seem offensive so far, and the main girl seems like the 'cool badass' character that we don't really get as heroes in Tales.

The closest we've come to that is grey area Yuri, but he wasn't really a 'bad guy' per se. She also seems very mutlilayered, so that brooding schtick doesn't wear think. Liking it.

Star Ocean 5 just looks better and it really does feel like Namco is giving the Tales team a smaller budget post Vesperia, wonder what happened?
