Tales of Berseria trailer #2

I hope they redo the combat. Zesteria combat the most boring part of the game.

Does not look bad to me, I only played Zestiria (from modern Tales), which game of series has better combat and why? I also have Graces F (backlogged) for ps3 and future pc port of Symphonia, how are they, worth it? Or (maybe) Xillia 1-2?

The little snippets of gameplay looked promising! Might have been better had I watched the trailer with sound though. Damn being at work.

Vesperia wasn't any different, it just had a more colorful artstyle and an overworld, along with fixed camera angles in towns.

Xillia tried to go more detailed with the character models with higher poly counts, as well as try a full 3D perspective for exploration, which merely introduced its own faults.

If you don't have the technical or budgetary chops for that, its gonna hurt.

I think the thing I missed the most in recent Tales of is an overworld, waypoint warping on the map is just terrible.
Please let us sail the seas with that ship.

Graces has probably the best combat in the series. I liked XIllia's as well and XIllia 2's weapon swap mechanic is interesting, though limited to 1 character. Anything prior to Graces feels like crap to me.

So it comes out next year huh? And it's going for the "behind character" camera angle that Graces and Zestiria had? Actually, the gameplay looks a lot like Zestiria's. Please don't suck. I can't handle another bad Tales of game after Zestiria. Might kill my love for the series if this one is as bad as Zestiria.

Also, the people saying that she transforms into a beast in the first trailer's thread were spot on. Good job.

Graces F has the best (3D) combat.

Basically, almost every combat system in modern Tales has been better than Zestiria's. Graces F, Xillia 1 and 2....

Never played Xillia? Same thing there. But the combat was actually good.

Some people still prefer 2D combat in Tales of games (like I do), but 3D combat like in more modern Tales are also fun & engaging, to be honest.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Star Ocean 5 just looks better and it really does feel like Namco is giving the Tales team a smaller budget post Vesperia, wonder what happened?

They'll probably give Tales to another team in the future.

tri-Ace, heh.

As much as I don't like TP I miss Vesperia's battle system. I might restart the PS3 version next month just to relive it.

I really hope the transformation thing from the new trailer isn't Chromatus/Armatization all over again.

I just don't get it, what makes Zestiria's combat bad?

For me, it's really slow and disjointed because of the limited combo system. The fact you have to rely on Armatization to reach longer combos also sucks. The fusion idea is interesting and I think offers some good risk/reward, but it isn't fully utilized.

Worst problem for me is that the encounter design goes to shit in the last 1/3rd or so. Those last 4-5 bosses are just awful and waste any potential the combat has.

main protag totally reminds me of Sando from the manwa Shin Angyo Onshi :

same kind revealing cloth, same long dark hair, same beast claw arm and dual weilding with a sword...

Not!Milla's design continues to be terrible. Maybe that flashback costume will be an alt.

The gameplay of Zestiria was the least of its problems. At the very least, a lot of the battle system issues were things that would have been pretty easy to iron out, so developing on it should be interesting. I just hope it isn't as protagonist-centric as Zestiria was.

Well since the trailer came up already, I wonder what else there'll be on the stream later on. I'm sure the Zesteria the X trademark is just for the anime, but I hope they'll tell us something about the the Rays trademark and The Best. And at least let us know if they canned the third triverse game.

I feel like that told me nothing useful. It basically said 'it's like Tales!' without giving us any of the important bits.

Any news of a day one PC version?

I hope so because I enjoyed playing Zesty on PC!

PC will be announced when a US announcement comes along. Wouldn't expect them to stop doing PC now since it seems to have done relatively well on Steam.

Free run is back, thank the lawd. Side step just doesn't give you the same freedom.

Players will get to control characters with a free run base.

Camera angles can be freely moved around during battle.

The Arts you want to use can be set on all four buttons of circle, X, triangle, and square, and you can do combos by combining up buttons to decide which Art to use next.

Also cool that you can move the camera this time.

I remember enjoying the OVA of that.

Nice. I like the sound of that camera. Sounds like the combos will be smoother too.

Yeah, this all sounds good.

The camera is what I'm more worried about. From what I saw in this 2nd trailer, it seems that "real world" battles are back, where you automatically start a battle when confronting an enemy instead of transitioning to a battle arena like every Tales game before Zestiria. The problem with this in Zestiria was that the camera would get caught up on walls making any battle indoors or in a corridor a nightmare to fight in. If they can fix the camera, I won't mind having Zestiria's combat back. The only negatives would be that multiplayer would suck (it hasn't been great in any 3D tales honestly) and that air combos will be absent again.

Also, watching the trailer again, I could totally see this being a Zestiria sequel. I hope it isn't though.

That...is a name.

New art system sounds interesting, especially since normal attacks and blocking in their usual forms are now out. I wonder if they're trying to move it more towards fighting game combat?

edit:

Oh yeah, I guess I considered that an outside problem since it was more due to the seamless battle transitions. It's a pretty easily fixable problem too, I really can't believe they wouldn't learn their lesson on that though. Maybe I'm just really optimistic.

This trailer alone is so much more interesting than Zestiria and both of the Xillia games ( and I'm a big Tales fan loved them all ).

So excited and hopes we get it in the west no longer than spring 2017.

Since you can map attacks to square I wonder what guard is mapped to now?

Also wondering how many artes they will let you set. Will it be 4 directions x 4 face buttons = 16? Or more?

It would have to be a trigger or bumper right? I could see that working out alright.

Either that or they'll do something crazy and give you different block/evade artes to set. Not sure how I'd feel about that.

But you said graces too. Were you not referring to third person perspective?

Yeah, Graces had 3rd Person perspective but still had the standard battle arena. Zestiria had the 3rd person perspective as well, but abandoned the standard battle arena format, which birthed the camera issues that plagued that game.

Xillia 1 and 2 didn't have 3rd person perspective. At least, I don't remember it having it. While you still have the side stepping like in Graces, the camera was always focused on showing the sides of the characters (like a standard fighting game and previous Tales games), while Graces focused on showing the back of the characters.

Reading the siliconera article shows that we can map attacks to all 4 buttons now. Cool. I assume blocking and whatnot will be set to the shoulder buttons.

Freedom shouldn't be the point though, it's aptly named LINEAR Motion Battle System.

I turned on Always Free Run in Zesty because it seemed to fix some of the camera issues, but I never really felt the need to free run. If you are running around, you are wasting time you could better spend on being offensive. The game gives you enough defensive options that you don't need to rely on free running.

This series is going down a strange path.

This is coming from a guy who has been on board with the series since the beginning.

I don't care what it's called. Tales is more fun when you have freedom.

If you're trying to evade several enemies, side step is a bit awkward. I mean it's fine for most encounters, but I prefer moving wherever I want, smoothly.

That's usually the case with these kinds of franchises...

Even so, i'm still looking forward to this one. I do like how they are portraying the main girl. She seems like a grimdark character with a heart of gold.

with franchise that has no relationship whatsoever with previous installment, and every game is fresh start sans the name 'tales'?

I can blame nothing but namco (or developer)'s lack of talent/interest with this one.

Maybe I'm just getting jaded, but apart from the main character designs everything about the game feels really generic/done-before. The premise, the cutscene fight choreography, washed-out colors, and not much of a looker.

Will still be looking forward to playing it though.
